My Turbo Project

So are you boosted yet? god this thread is taking FOREVER :P

I so wish I could be installing my stuff this month.. but nooo, it's gotta be all cold and snowy and stuff

Pics from tonight:

Just click on the thumbnails (800x600)

Everything that needed to get done tonight got done. So I'm glad about that. I have to pick up a throw out bearing, passenger side motor mount, RTV, and axle seal for the driver side. Anything else?

RTV and alcholic beverages

Ohhh, indeed.

The car seems to be in better hands with a bunch of buzzed grease monkeys than it does the owner. ;)

j/k

well, no luck in finding a motormount today, but I did get the axle seal and RTV.

Guess tonight will just be working on wires

you and rear motor mounts..... p.s. I think you still owe me one.

it's time to start dressing up that engine bay a little don't ya think?

I think he needs to start with a serious cleaning of that engine bay first...there's grease/oil/dirt everywhere!

where to start with today. With the mishap yesterday, today we were just going to do some things that didn't involve the engine: assemble turbo, run wires.

Using the GT28R, we had to rotate the cold side, which meant making a custom bracket for the wastegate acutator. Kevin was awesome at that.

So we went ahead and attached the turbo to the manifold, and realized the oil drain fitting wouldn't allow for the line to fit. Luckily I aslo had a 45* fitting, so that went in.

After that, we decided to hang the turbo/manifold from the studs. That's when we ran into the big problem.

The wastegate actuator hits the block. We can't make it longer because it'll run into the clutch actuator assembly. The only idea we came up with is to get another actuator, cut the shaft short, and mount the actuator between the turbine housing. The other option is to send the turbo back, and exchange it for at GT25R (MSP turbo).

One thing that did get done was I got the AEM wideband mounted. I had to sand the inside of the holder to get the gauge to slide in.

Joyce Ann took some other random pictures:

Something about a hammer, an axle with oil leaking out of it, and a GRM Miata....

Fuel for my mule...

This was seen at Pull-a-part... maybe it was a tow vehicle...

I was thinking the same thing especially when the two transmissions were right next to each other.
Mine looks polished vs nicely burnt oil (you know.. race car look) color.
I'm doing you a fav of cleaning the god(grease/oil/dirt) off the outside of the tranny.
(Luke's is the dirty one on the right)

The speedo gear was set on crooked...as I found out after I put the gears back in + set the shift forks + replaced the steel ball + reinstalled the pin.
Talk about PITA.
It took awhile to get the speedo gear back into position.

*waits for RTV to set*

I guess now would be a good time to show off the newest addition to my garage.
A 41'', 12 drawer stainless steel roller cabinet + 8 drawer top chest. :)
Can't beat $500 for both at Harbor Freight.

you are milking that harbor freight discount huh

You bet! (and I'm here to spread the milk.)
If you need anything... I can usually get it just a hair above cost.(around 45% off)
I have about $2k's worth of tools for $800 so far.
It's the perfect job for any car/DIY enthusiast.

so, what was wrong with speedo gear? and what was the RTV for?
It was pressed on slightly crooked and the rtv is to seal the crankcase together.

How should I get the tranny to you via scott?
I gotta go to work tomorrow at 8am... (is scott usually up that early)

not on a Sunday. I'll ask him where to put it.

Love the progress photos! And nice job on the gauges...the DEFI's are sexy.
