I don't know where to even begin.... or conclude.... This thread has been the funniest piece of literature I have read in a long, long time.
firstly, the reason why they were only offerring you $1500.00 for your car now is because they took $6000.00 of the top of their selling car.
For example: I will sell this car to you for 15,000.00. I will give you $3000.00 for your car. that brings us down to financing $12,000.00 plus tax, tags, title, etc.
You then say, you want my car (meaning the one i'm selling in this example) for less. I say ok, I'll sell you mine for 14,000.00. But I'll only give you 2000.00 for yours. You ask why and I say, because I'm lowering my price, so I have to lower yours. You say, "ok that makes sense". YOU STILL FINANCE 12,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They can switch the numbers 6 ways from sunday on you, just to confuse you and make you happy. They could've given you 10,000 for your car, you would've been rediculously happy, until you found out that they're adding that 10k to the price of the new car. It would've been 28,000 for the new one, with your 10k trade in, you still would be paying 18k for their car. The number that you truly need to be concerned with is the "bottom line" After they do all their numbers, what is the price that you will be financing. Anything above that line on the sales sheet means absolutely nothing.
If they brought your trade in value down to 1500, your current car is probably worth about 1750. They'll sell to an auction company the week after you trade it in. A trade in is really only a marketing ploy to get you into the dealership.
2ndly, I purchased my 2003.5 sunlight silver mazdaspeed off of the showroom floor on December 19, 2003. There were 7 miles on the car. If you really need proof, I paid $17,000.00 even for it. I put 1,000.00 down and financed $16,000.00. People like me are the reason why this car is not worth nearly what it should be. When they "blew out" the last of them with 2500.00 rebates and 2500.00 off the sticker price, it caused the mazdaspeed's value to plummet. Notice not to many people (if any) are leasing these cars. There is no residual value.
People (on and off of this forum) can not get 14,000.00 for their mazdaspeeds. If you were to take it to a dealership, they have no "value" for the mazdaspeed (kbb, "black book", etc.) They will give the mazdaspeed owner the price of a Protege ES for trade in. Depending on mileage (which is what we've been trying to get across to you) they will offer anywhere between 9500.00 and 11,500.00. If you have low mileage (less than 15,000 miles/year= 2.5 * 15,000= 37500 miles) you will get around 11,500.00. If you have more miles, you will get less. The problem is, is that people still owe 14,000 on their car. So what happens is the owner would have to add that difference (in this example 2500.00) onto the cost of the new car (this is known as being "upside down"). So if the new car was 15,000.00, it has now jumped up to 17,500. This is why mileage is so important. It was actually a blessing in disguise that you didn't get this car. That "mileage/guage cluster" problem would've metaphorically killed you in the long run.
And don't ever, ever, ever, EVER, EVER, EVER allow a salesman to fool you into thinking that the car they are selling was owned by an old grandmother that never drove the car. Assume that a whacked out kid, as yourself, drove that car into the ground. It is a game of cat and mouse, when it comes to negotiating with car dealers. It is nothing more than you being happy with everything that they are presenting to you at that moment.
To everyone else: The worst thing you can ever do, is tell a person that they got ripped off, buying their car. I'm sure I got a better deal than most of you did, with the speeds. And now after reading this long post, your kicking yourselves in the ass for not waiting till the end of '03 to buy your car. If this kid wants to buy his speed for 18k, let him do it. Just advise him about any defects or transformations or anything physically wrong that you can recognize in any speed(s) that he is interested in. He'll learn, as we all did.
P.S. I know that last paragraph is hypocritical, but hey us hypocrits are idiots, too!!!
