I know Ractive intakes (and similar ones) are of cheap quality, but at least you don't have to drill any holes into the air filter. just take the piping with the pre-drilled hole for intake temp and then stick a K&N intake on the end. here's an example from a Vancouver protege club member:

attachment.php

can't see the temp hole, but it's behind it's on the underside.

Putting the small hole in the bottom of the K&N for the air temp. sensor, was really easy.

That looks good! What's supporting the piping? And; will a K&N fit on the end instead of the Ractive filter (or is that a K&N), Were any other mods needed?

isn't that digi168's car?
AGR#7, i don't think there's anything supporting that piping and filter. I'm sure that is sagging down like ours, actually mine has to sag down or else i can't close my hood.
After a week, i notice that my filter has stratched a peice of fabric off the hood linear. (no)

Now,,, since I have my K&N supported, it will be left alone. A CAI is a possibilty, but it appears if we go with the Injen CAI, we have to replace our existing BOV (from what I am reading). Cutting into that line will not be good for warranty issues, I don't think. At least now; if I need to, I can have the stock airbox back on in 20 minutes. Maybe it isn't that big of a deal, so we will see.

Yeah, i notice the cutting of the hose where the BOV is breathing from when the injen CAI is installed. I wonder what is supporting the injen intake's piping?

Good question. But, because of the added weight, it must be anchored somewhere.

VERY IMPORTANT FOR K&N users............

For all of you that are installing a K&N, I think this is a very important addition: A support. Another member (2K3 Mazdaspeed), has already posted photos of his. I got the idea from him. Here is the one a friend and fabricated today. It's a simple piece of metal (from who knows what). We were able to use the existing holes, and bend it into the shape we needed with a vice and pliers. We didn't drill any holes, either. We used (as you can see in my photos) the existing threaded shaft that the airbox mounts to, and one of the bolt holes on the intake next to the mass air sensor, that the airbox mounted to. It was quite easy, and I feel, neccessary. You will see, we also, painted it black.

The weight of the K&N was pulling my intake down - so I had to do something. 2K3 Mazdaspeed had a great idea, so I followed suit. Very solid now. My K&N was actually resting against the coolant bottle - not good. This is a great fix!

That looks sexy...

I just did this mod this morning and took it for a spin. I did notice the hesitation isn't quite so bad but mostly what I noticed is how much more you can hear the turbo spooling and the blowoff as others have indicated. It sounds really bad ass. You can hear it sucking the air too when you lay into it. I took it on some country backroads and was just about hitting the red line and that b**** was wailing really nicely. A cool, cheap mod. Thanks to everyone on this thread for the tips and info.

Arg! This forum is costing me too much money --- now I have to go out and buy a K&N filter! Sounds like it's well worth the money though because my turbo is way too quiet. Thanks to everyone for the great info and picutres; the pictures are incredibley good.

Giddy Up!!! I'm now boosting to about 9.5psi!

Giddy Up!!! A different beast for sure. Hit 3rd gear - it explodes!!! Second gear 'scratch' ain't nothin', not to mention how fast it spools now. WOW!! 60-70 mph comes on fast as hell.
