Do you know if i have to keep the air box sensor?
My ractive cone filter is steel on the back where youd rilled your hole, so i can't drill a hole through that....
What would happen if i don't keep the sensor? Can i just tie it up and leave it hanging?

you need the sensor dude

That's probably the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF). It's measuring the amount of air going into the engine, so the ECU knows how much fuel to squirt in. If you pull it out the computer will not be able keep the air-to-fuel ratio's consistent and your engine performance will suffer.

Make sure you know what the sensor is before you disconnect it.

That's not the sensor i'm talking about. There's another sensor that goes directly into the airbox. it's much smaller. I've never seen a sensor that goes into the Air Box. From all the intakes that i've changed, only had the MAF.
too many sensors get complicated and call for problems in the future.

Here is a modified photo showing the hole (circled in RED) you drill for the air sensor.....

I took about a 20 mile run in the country this afternoon - nothing but 'Back Road Boogie'. I am truly impressed. Finally; some dry roads!! No rain since last evening.

The car feels more punchy, for sure, and no hesitation (hiccup - starving for fuel - like feeling) while accelerating, as I had previously mentioned from yesterday's experience, seemed to completely go away after installing the K&N.

5 or more horsepower gain? I wouldn't be surprised - it sure feels like it to me, but hell; it could be the newness of my very first modification!?

Fantastic,

Thanks for the clarification on where the sensor should go.

John:
You are quite welcome. I first learned about the K&N filter upgrade through Britt ('122 Vega' on the forum). He had already done the mod, and has photos posted on his site. I take no credit; but thanks!

By the way; The sensor you remove from the airbox and install in the K&N is the "Air Intake Temperature Sensor".

got mine on in about 15 minutes earlier thanks to the very detailed instructions provided above.

Well! How do you like it? How's the acceleration, etc...?

i don't know if i honestly noticed any real gains because it was hard to test it out while the roads were wet and bad with slush and snow but i can for sure say i hear the turbo and BOV much easier. can't wait to get my HKS SS BOV this week and hopefully on this weekend. the 2 ought to make a nice combo...........for now.

i'll have to get back to you later on this maybe after its dried up a bit so i can have some fun. i'm still a little leary of driving the car though while i've go this not so healthy clunking noise coming from the front undernieth the car. i'll will however drive hour or so north to my dealer after work so they can fix this. i'm tempted to see what they can do or say about da clunk in da trunk but i'm sure it will only lead to more frustration towards them.

i noticed that since the air intake install most of you said the BOV was louder. is there a way that I can get the BOV to be an atmospheric type instead of recirculating?

Anyone thinking of fabing up a heat shield...maybe as an actual separation between the intake and rest of engine compartment...provided it aligns with the hood (closed)...or a wrap-around-filter style shield...something that snaps into place...an idea...not sure of how much of a difference it would make but pulling in slightly cooler air can always be beneficial.

Here is how my Air Intake Temperature Sensor looks after install into the K&N RU-3580 Cone Filter (responding to a previous enquiry).......

hmm, are you suppose to put the whole sensor in there? i didn't look at mine to closely and just drilled a hole big enough for the little ball at the end to go through and stuck that in there. maybe i should rethink this

Yes. You want the entire sensor in, just like it was in the original airbox. Those splines will lock it down, You might want to enlarge the hole you drilled slightly, but keep in mind, you still want the sensor in nice and tight.

Its in!

I put that s**** in but when I was driving after I put it on it was giving me weird feed back. I unpluged the battery to reset the computer, why not, and it fixed all my problems. My car sounds even sweeter now...

haha, i'm now running with my air intake temperature sensor hanging out. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the car's performace at all. The computer doesn't even read anything wrong. No engine light or what so ever, everything seems to be just fine.
