My 2010 Mazdaspeed3 review

I just had the privelage of driving my new 2010 Mazdaspeed3 from San Diego to the central valley and back. I put about 650 miles on the car in the last 2 days. It's not our primary family hauler, the Mazda5 serves that purpose, but I figured it would be fun to get more familiar with the car and we weren't bringing the dog so it was ok. The kids fit fine. They didn't have as much legroom as they do in the 5, and I was feeling the kicks of my 3 year old every now and again, but they seemed fine. Our luggage fit great, though it was only a 2 day trip so I'd hope it would.

The wife and I were very comfy. Not riding on a couch comfy, but never squirmy. The seats hold you in really really well. My shoulder blades had to get a little used to the confinement, but after 100 miles or so they had adjusted to it. The dual zone climate control worked beautifully. We even adjusted our sides a tad differently and felt as though it was precise in doing so. The stereo sounded good enough...not awesome. But I didn't opt for the Bose so maybe that one would. Bluetooth music synch works great, quality is decent. Sometimes the compression is noticeable though. If you are looking for the best possible sound quality, that is not the way to go. MP3 CDs sounded excellent, and I liked the info screen. Aux sounded better than bluetooth, but only by a small amount. Bluetooth phone calls were easy to make, sounded fine, etc.

As for the driving experience. Wow. What an engine. So smooth and torquey just where you need it. Cruising at 80 is quiet and seemless. When you slow down to 70 because of traffic, then give it some gas, the torque just hits rockets the car to 80, 90, 100...like nothing. All in 6th gear. If you happen to slow down to 55 then need to speed up, the pull is still good...but a downshift to 5th helps build boost quicker.

The steering is very BMW...only it's better than any BMW I've ever owned. The car stays very flat and changes lanes confidently. The brakes pull you from speed smoothly and quickly, with very little dive. The suspension is fairly compliant. On most roads it felt like I was in a BMW...stiff but not too stiff. Comfy but not too comfy. Very eager. It soaks up small imperfections nicely. Just enough feedback is transmitted to the steering wheel, but not much of the annoying stuff. It's not perfect though. Some sharp bumps or dips feel pretty harsh. Almost like bottoming out a strut at times. And concrete roads felt pretty awful, and sounded much louder that I like. Each rut on those roads felt hard. I've never had a car that likes those roads much, but the mazda5 does them much better.

The shifter feels SOLID. I know it's cable operated but it doesn't feel detatched. It feels great. The gears are a tad close though. And sometimes a little hard to differentiate between 1st and 3rd, and 4th and 6th. But the weight of the shifter was nice and the clutch was also weighted well. Clutch is a little vague though.

Sounds...the exhaust has a bit of a throaty rumble to it. At startup you hear it, decelerating you hear it. Cruising you don't hear it. WOT you hear some whooshing and sucking, but the exhaust isn't noticeable at all. I'd prefer a little more volume. For a stock car I give it pretty high marks though.

I kept very close watch on gas mileage. My speeds were pretty high, and I played around going faster than I probably should have, when I felt like it. I stayed out of boost when I was cruising, but let it spool and boost enough to keep a smile on my face. My first all-freeway stretch showed an indicated 29.2MPG on the computer. But only 26MPG at the pump once I did the math. Another tank had mostly highway but lots of city and super fun racing around with my brother, dad, etc...that one said 25MPG on the computer but ended up being 22. My last tank is showing 30MPG on the computer, so I'm going to prematurely guess I pulled of 27MPG.

Overall this is a great car. For the price it's an AWESOME car. The interior feels much more upscale. I especially like the little blue-lights scattered around the interior, adding a bit of atmosphere. It's not likely to get much police attention on the road, compared to say an Evo or STi. But it's every bit as fast after 60MPH, and is just so much nicer inside.

Oh and here's that silly, happy front end/

I have to agree with the OP's review pretty much to a T. I got my '10 Liquid Silver MS3 on August 20th and have nearly 3,400 miles on it and this is how I'd sum the car up. I have the morning commute in traffic and I've made the drive from Pgh to MD and VA a few times with no real ill will toward the car, just a big smile (and a couple high speed runs with no cars around of course ;)). I do have a minor complaint about the shifter's somewhat finicky nature and it is closely spaced, but overall the gear changes are pretty smooth. I have to take my car in for a warranty item though - my driver's side seat is squeaking like crazy if I move around...a bit of an annoyance when I shift and the seat squeaks accordingly. Now thats minor in the grand scheme of things...this car is a phenomenal value for your $$ and doesnt make me miss my G35 at all (well maybe in the looks department:)). I'm just now anxiously awaiting the release of Corksports modifications! Anyone else?

Likewise...great and accurate review. I just want to point out that one of the first things I noticed when I test drove my car at the dealer was the steering. It's just rock solid, and wonderfully responsive (very similar to my 91 MX-5, but more refined).

Oh, and I love those 6UL's on your Miata. Great looking wheels. :)

Awesome review. I'm starting to like the 2010 more and more by the day as more people are getting them and posting reviews and pics. I can't wait to see one in person. Coming from an owner of three Mazdas myself, I feel you on the Mazda5.

I have a 2008 GT. It's my preferred choice for those long drives and usually choose it over the MS3 at times for those quick corner store runs. Sad to say, I recently gave up the third car. I didn't feel the need to keep it anymore, even though it was bought and paid for long ago.

Silver is the best color!

Yes, I truly cannot believe it's an electric box. It feels so good. At low speeds it's easy, at high speeds it's purrrrrfect. I'd dare say I like it better than my miata's.

Oh and I love these 6ULs. They are the gen2 version. 15x8, 12.1lbs....and cheap. I sometimes laugh when I think about how my miata has wider wheels than my Mazdaspeed3.

I did notice this on my one MS3 test drive. In fact, at one point during a semi-spirited acceleration, I went for 5th and accidentally went into 3rd... was pretty embarrassing... so it makes me feel a little better that you guys notice the tight shift pattern too. Hopefully this is something that can be gotten used to, because when hot-doggin' it on the twisties, you sure don't want to be accidentally throwing it into the wrong gear.

well...me thinks there is a little bit of movement of the shifter/trans under load. If I recall correctly people had issues with this on the last gen Mazdaspeed. This is nothing new for me to deal with though, and I don't really mind. My BMW m3 suffered badly from this. Many people actually managed to hit 3rd instead of 5th at high RPM and destroy their engine. I replaced the tranny mounts with stiffer ones and it was 1000% better. I'll do the same here if need-be.

Again, I did not drive a WRX, but when I sat in a brand new Impreza, the shifter felt like total crap... ultra loose and ultra rubbery... felt very vague and sloppy. Then again this was not a WRX but a regular Impreza, so maybe it's not a fair comparison. Though one review I read of the WRX said that the shifter WAS kind of loose and "rubbery". So, by comparison, the MS3 shifter is worlds better. For an "economy-racer", I thought the shifter was just fine. Hopefully with practice it will be easy to always find the gear you want, quickly.

I have owned a Forester XT, which had the WRX trans. It was pretty rubbery and vague. Definitely not as nice in feel as the Mazdaspeed. However, I have also owned a WRX STi, and that tranny (although notchy) was amazing.

We will probably take the Mazda5 on the majority of our family trips. That's what we have it for. And it's great at it. It would be pretty sweet if it had the highway authority that the Mazdaspeed has though.

Yeah, I think overall I'd give the nod to the MS3's steering over the Miata's as well. The shifter, on the other hand...the MS3's does feel very good, but I have yet to feel a better one than the Miata's.

Ok, that's absolutely nuts. It's humorous enough that they're lighter than my 15x7 Rota Slipstreams (~14lbs), but to be lighter than my 14x5.5 stock daisies? (omg)
I think I'll definitely be buying a set of 6ULs for my next MX-5.

Glad to see that I am not the only Klutz with the MS3 trans. It's not made for speedshifts. Not like the old Four-Speeds when all you had to do was point the knob towards a different fender!! (I know, "Whats a Fender?")

I take it you've never driven an s2000, Integra Type-R, NSX, RSX-S, Civic Si, or TSX?

My stock 15x6 were 13.1lbs, pretty light already so I wouldn't settle for anything heavier. I compared my 6UL with sticky icky icky 205/50/15 Kumho XS to the stock 15x6 with 195/50/15 Michelins and they were identical in weight...and the Kumhos were new, Michelins were not.

I wonder if there's a good aftermarket shifter for the 2010 MS3... one that is still "streetable" but just a bit tighter and more precise... and wonder if changing the shifter on this car is fairly easy (or extremely difficult)...? I never worked on a small FWD car before, at least in terms of dealing with tranny related things. Someone mentioned the shifter is "cable operated"...? I never even heard of such a thing.

We are currently working on a brand new shifter for the 2010 MazdaSpeed 3, from what you are saying in your post I think you will be pleased with the design we are working on.

The shifter in the 2010 Speed 3 is a bit more of a challenge to remove than in the previous model, but nothing very hard.

I test drove an RSX (not sure if it was the S) and I've driven an '03 Si, but it's been a while. I don't recall them feeling as good or better than the MX-5's.

jeebusm3 is making me want an MS3 more and more, it would pair up with one of my people movers well :D

Enjoyed the review, consistent what I've read so far, cool stuff.

Either that silver or white (Canada) are the best so far. I'm tired of dark tones...

The 5 and 3 are a good pair.

Outstanding review, thanks for taking the time to post it.

Now why don't they combine the two and offer a MazdaSpeed5?
