MSP sub replacement questions

I did a search and found out some recommendations that people recieved. I do not need a lot of bass but would like a little more than what the msp has.I also do not know much about car audio. I work at Best Buy so I can get a good deal on car audio stuff.

I want to keep the stock box. I read that the JL8w6vD2 fits into the stock location, is this right? Is there another sub that will fit there?

If I just wanted more bass then could I rewire the sub with 4 ohm wire instead of 8 ohm and flip over the amp? Will that blow the stock kenwood sub? Also what is required to flip the sub over? Any special screws, brackets, etc. needed?

not the w6...the 8w3v2-D2 is the largest that'll fit without making mods. Anything that's got a shallower mounting depth than it will fit, but it's probably the best all around choice to slap in there. Talk to Got Wake? about his TB 8" speakers, though...I'm not sure of their specs or dimensions, but they're a bunch cheaper. he can give you more info.

I purchased a JL 8W3v2 for around $120 and just waiting for it to come in.

www.respl.com has some 8in subs. I know some guys that had some of them. they really like them. the power requirement is not that high, and they are not to expensive.

you flip the amp over just to keep it cool.

those RE 8's are awesome, and have some good low bass characteristics, but they are dual 4 ohms, and i believe the MSP amp is designed for a 4 ohm load, so the RE's won't work:(

here's the specs on the tang band 8's.

4 of them tuned for daily driving will do mid to upper 140's on an audio control meter running off 1100 watts. 3 of them tuned for SPL will do about 150 dB with around 2k watts (naughty)

not bad for a sub that will run you about $45 shipped to you.

i'd like to do a comparison between the TB 8 and the JL w3v2 8, to see which one is better. but price wise there is no comparison;)

I was not sure on the VC's of the re's. I just knew they sounded nice for 8's. thanks for the claricfication. I have not been reasearching much. I have been busy and missed tons of threads. trying to play catch up. let me konw about the comparison after you do it..

I totally forgot about the Image Dynamics ID8 v.3...they come in dual 2 ohm. You can buy that at soundomain.com...another great sub. It's more than the TB stuff, but still great quality.

Alright I am going to look into getting one of those subs but I still want to know if anyone has just rewired and flipped over the amp? How did it sound?

Look into DLS for an 8" sub... their subs have very very small mounting depths... even less than a JL audio w0.

*thread jack* got wake? - how is the SQ on that brahma

Whatever you do, don't put a new expensive sub speaker in the stock MSP plastic box. If you wan't better sound you must go with a wood box. Make one that can fit in the stock location. Even use the stock amp and 8" - 10" speaker. The plastic box is overly flexible and can't pound the same way wood boxes do.

generally, with an 8" in that'll fit in that box with that little power, you aren't gonna pound anyway. It's a small box, but it'll do the job if you just want a better/more reliable sub. As for turning the amp over, rewiring, etc. It can only sound better. So one on here has done it...he replaced the Kenwood with a JL8w3v2 and was pretty happy with the results.

If you want more thump, then you're gonna need a new set-up, period....new box, new amp...probably a new location too. That's what I did.

and that is what I would do.

can't tell the difference from when my friend had his 10W7(nana) it sold him an adire audio, and he used to be the biggest JL fan. well, he still is, but now he's got the 1000/1 amp on a brahma 12(evil)

how many db's do you think you hit?

who me? depends on the system and meter.

fist ever setup in the pro with a single 15 hit a 143.2 on an AC meter

didn't meter my next few setups, all 10+ of them:(

power acoutsik MOFO 15 in a transmission line box tuned to 40 hz running off a power acoustik A1700DB amp puttin out 1200 watts did a 147.2 at florida finals on the old termlab. it did a 151.2 after i rebuilt the box on an AC meter at a local shop.

brahma 10 in a 6th order bandpass box running off 1100 watts did a 147.2 on an old term lab meter. i didn't get a chance to meter it with 2300 watts, cause the spider seperated from the basket. but with it seperated and running off 1100 watts it did a 143.somthing. it has since been rebuilt under warranty.

four 8's in a 2 cu ft box tuned to 33 hz did a 139.2 on my term lab USB meter, the hardest meter on the market, but also the most consistant.

three 8's in a 4.5 cu ft box tuned to 55 hz did a 142.7 on my term lab.

four 8's in a 1.4 cu ft box tuned to 33 hz did a 137.3 on my term lab, and i had two 8's in each side of the trunk for that one. it went the width of the trunk from right behind the wheel wells back, to save space.

bringing this back up again, because now I got my discount at best buy, so I need to know what to buy.
4 Ohm wiring but what gauge? I think they have 8,12, and 16. I need new connectors too right? What kind? Anything else?

For speaker wire? 12 gauge is fine for damn near any sub setup even 16 will do the job if its not high powered.

Connectors for the sub are just basic yellow female spade crimp ons. The installers in your store should be able to help you out. Some don't even need them.

alright thanks. I hate to say it but the people that work in the audio department at my store, at least not in the install bay, are not very knowledgeable. Once, they even made me cover that section because I knew the most about car audio and I know very little about it.

I am so close to going to BB just becuase I could demand alot per hour and probably get it for just the reason you have described. The problem is I refuse to push the service plans agressively.
