This is probably a stupid question, but do we need the heat shield in the engine bay? Does it help dissipate heat or is it just a protector so we don't burn the s*** out ourselves?

well i haven't had mine on in over a year....car still runs and i haven't burned myself......knock on wood

I am in the process of cleaning up my engine and I just want to get rid of any parts that aren't really necessary. So this is good to know.

unless you have an aftermarket manifold removing it wont look very nice. just take it out and hit it with some metal polish. I've seen a lot that have been polished to mirror finish that look great.

i have absolutely no knowledge on the subject but i was once led to believe that the heat sheilds contribute to cracking as the keep the heat in... could be just hot air but it could hold some merit

I just PB blasted the rusty ass bolts holding it on. I plan on taking off sometime today and bead blasting it. After that I'm not sure what I want to do. I may just leave it bead blasted color. Al though it will be more prone to rust then. Maybe I'll try the metal polish first.

Well it's clean as a whistle now. I need to put some type of coating on it to keep it from rusting around. Just don't know what I want to use yet. Obviously need something that can handle hot temps.

Here's a stupid question: How do I remove the heat shield from my 2000 ES? I'd like to take it to a bright shine with some metal polish, but afraid that I won't be done polishing in a day. Can I run my car in the meantime if I have it off?

yes you can run it forever with it off. Nothing will mess up by taking off the heatshield. it's there to protect the exh mani from water intrusion while it's red hot. Which will crack the mani. As for protection for your hand....bull#$%.that thing gets hot as hell. But like i said it doesnt need to be there. You can take it off and polish it and leave it off till your done.
