MSP Engine Internals

Okay...cuz I was about to call :bs: if you were saying the MSP.
There are 2 things you have to consider though. One is tranny design adn the other is driver habbits. A weaker tranny will certianly cause problems more then a stronger one but so will the driver.

On either car as you increase power the tranny becomes more likely to be damaged by the driver. To be a bullett proof I would say 180 Ib/foot torque on the MSP is the limit. After that realibilty is shortened but how drasticly depends on the driver. by the

By the what??????????

Yes I realize that it is all dependant on the driver and the amount of time and etc. I was just saying that whoever just threw out a number like that to him without going further into the do's and don't's was off.

180 seems so low...not saying you are right/wrong or anything in between......just damn....only 180!!!!
How much does torque increase exponentially with whp???

hp is not the worry, its torque. 180 is for bullitt proof meaning will only break under user stupidity.

Keep in mind there are absolutely no protege that have daily driven on 250 whp. NONE! The closest are the SWC cars that run about that and need rebuilds every 3 races.

My friend who is the Head Mazda tech at the place where I got my car said that Mazda and Callaway did huge research and the the motor in the MSP which is the same motor in every way as the other Proteges, can handle about 190 hp and after that your are crossing the line. He went to a big seminar with a bunch of oter techs when the car came out and learned all about them and drove them on courses.

I've got something for you guys....I guess I can post it now. Let me see if I can get my dyno print outs to show up with this camera...You'll get a kick out of it...It goes very well with what you're talking about now.

1sy MP3's numbers are correct

Here's what I was able to pull. The only mod to the vehicle (AT THE TIME) was my own custom made exhaust, and a conical air filter attached to the MAF. The pictures are blurry, but it proves 3 things:

1. The 02 readings show this car was garbage-tuned from the factory

2. My power numbers were no joke (when I was boosted)

3. You guys should've bought my exhausts when I was making em! They made assloads of power!

first pic is wheel HP&torque. It's down from what I expected, but still very respectable for a car that was about to give up the ghost!

WHP- 158
lb/ft - 159

ENGINE HP - 227hp
ENGINE TORQUE - 197lb/ft

Mazda claimed 170hp on the engine and about 130 to the wheels.I got almost as much power to the wheels as they claim their motor made. Also, this was an unflashed car with less than 3500 miles on it. I've heard rumors about it leaning out after 5K miles.....I dunno. Here's my wideband readings.

at WOT at peak power and torque it was 12.90....not bad right??
I wish I could scan this directly...This thing looks like a waterpark ride. It's all over the place. Nowhere near what a correct curve should look like. Hope this helps shed some light. Also, FYI, this was done on my car at stock boost which registered about 5.9psi (steady) it would spike above 7 but went done to high 9- low 6 real quick.

second graph

This is engine power...I believe I may have gotten them mixed up.

Anyway, my car was pretty quick. It would pull 9.5"s on street tires (35psi) and about 7psi. Not too bad, but still not fast enough to compete with the del sol turbos. I tried....However, I could hold 4 passengers and stuff in the trunk!

huh, where are my graphs??

Can someone tell me how to attach these pics a little better. I swore they were in the "attach file" box. Yet they aren't showing up on the website... what gives??

Go to user Cp then manage files then add the picture then use the form

{img] the pictures link[/img} us all [ and ] though I had to use { so it would show up.

Or just quote this

the quote page will show wou how its done.

I would like to know more about the tranny. I have read a couple of things...but I would like a better understanding of what you are getting at.....
So what if I was getting up to like 200 whp at least....at most 230 whp and not sure of the torque.....not a horrible clutch-er, but not the best by far....what would that mean for both the tranny and the clutch....
what would be the quesstimate for 230 whp? Are you pretty much stating that a Protege just shouldn't even be modded? That the application of mods is just pointless because really you couldn't get anywhere with it?

No I am stating power and reliabilty are inversly preportional. One goes up and the other goes down. This is true with any peice of the protege or any car but are cars were build to handle 150 total HP mazda never intended this car to make over 200 hp. This is why it can't easly out power an SRT for example as the SRT was built for that power level and beyond. Now the engine and most everything else can be upgraded to handle the added power. The only thing that can't be upgraded or atleast has no parts that are available is the tranny.
