Ms3 Mpg

Drive a truck to work everyday and then go take the Mazda for a ride, makes mid 20 MPG feel fantastic compared to 15 or 16.

My last tank was 26.8mpg (28.6 on the computer), mixed driving. It's too bad I had to pay $3.01/gal on my last fill. Prior to that it was 27-something. Right now the computer shows 31.1mpg with ave speed of 37mph and 42miles on the trip meter. That 42 miles was mostly local roads including from Lombard to Forest Park and back (Roosevelt road in and St. Charles road back) and a quick trip to Elmhurst for an oil change (Wilkins moved).

How am I doing?

Trip says 27-29. I've done the "miles driven/gal put in" only once and it was around the same.

Sucks I've only been able to do that once due to the car being serviced and they disconnected the power so I couldn't be very accurate...

My Mazdaspeed 3 MPG

GUess what? I usually get around 156 mi. per half tank. So I am getting between 23 - 25 mpg. Im not sure why... and I havent been driving any different, but I just got 194 mi for the last half tank. I know measuring via the little needle isnt accurate, but thats a huge difference. The only thing I can attribute it to is that I usually fill up at Sunoco. This tank I got from Valero?? I think thats the place, I believe the gas is from Brazil. I have noticed that my shifting is smoother and the engine is dead quiet. This must be great gas. Hey Ive got great gas! heh.

Nope... same route during the work week... which is LIE (Long Island Expressway) stop/go... traffic. Driving normal. Which includes some zoomin.

The only way to accurately measure gas mileage is by filling up the tank and dividing the number of gallons used by the miles traveled since the last fill-up. The OBC is 4%-5% optimistic. If both brands of fuel have the same RON you would be hard pressed to detect any difference in fuel economy- maybe a 1% difference at best.

LIE FML! I drive the GSP constantly and get from 155-170 per half tank, however i did squeeze out a little over 200 when i went to carlisle pa. last year for a truck show, had to go to exit 226 off the pa. tpk, 133 miles that extension alone, and when i got there i had more than half a tank left. Sunoco gas is the ONLY gas I will use!

Got a little over 27MPG on my last tank of city driving. Probably the best I've gotten since purchasing it last Summer. Light came on right ~300 I think and I went another 20 or so.

Different gas mixture? I've noticed my car gets better mileage with Shell gas than any other. I've tried Unocal 76, Chevron, Arco. I've gotten bad results with Chevron/Arco. I just stick with the Shell blend and it gets me around 25-26 mpg combined, as long as I'm driving normal...(yes)

Folks...so far what I am seeing in this thread is bad science. (For the most part.)

You cannot take random tanks from different stations, different routes, approximate gas mileage and make accurate conclusions!

If you want to do this right... Drive 3,4, or even 5 tanks with one gas company driving the exact same routes (No special trips, massive changes in highway versus city miles) and average your MPG (Using M_Compact's method...he has it right) and then do the exact same thing with the other gas companies. Then come back and report the data and the conclusions... Otherwise, this is just opinion and conjecture.... and frankly, meaningless.

if you really want to do it right you need to do it on a dyno or closed course.

That would be best -- true, but probably overkill if we just want to get something accurate within a 1 or 2 MPG. You run 1000 miles or so per station, and if there was the massive difference claimed in this post, you would ostensibly see it with my test.

I usually get around 25-26 mpg... I got 27 mpg out of my last one with no highway. I try to only use Shell... if it's good enough for Ferrari Formula 1 cars, it's good enough for me.

But seriously, I've noticed that my bikes (high compression engine) like Shell better than other brands in the past... runs smoother, less knocking.

It isnt good science... Ill refill in the morning to check for real. But I divided 194 by 7.5 (more bad science) and only came up with 25.8 mpg anyway... Which is not to bad for stop and go... but for some reason I thought itr was 29.. using the guessing positive technique... hehe
Im going to do 4 on this gas and 4 on Sunoco and see if I see any difference.
