Ms3 Mpg

had the same question about 2 weeks back, the MPG's improve drastically after break-in.

What break-in process did you utilize..I'm not convinced this would change things..?

My gas mileage never changed from day 1... I had two MS3...they both acted same.

I actually haven't been on the highway much recently...my commute could involve a highway, w/ constant stop and go traffic, or street driving w/ lights every now and then, so I choose city.

Well a lot of hard driving under city conditions could certainly drop you into the 17-19 MPG range without too much difficulty. Stop / Start driving at relatively low speeds just eats up gas. (All that energy is being wasted when you have to brake all the time. And when you can't take advantage of your taller gears..5th..6th... that doesn't help matters.)

I have never seen an engine that didn't become more efficient after break-in (given the same driving habits). IMO, if you didn't notice a change in power or MPG, then your engine was already broken in (which is possible). My last two cars were new, both with under 20 miles on them. There was a very noticeable increase in MPG and power. With my MS3, using the mpg computer for a point of value (not actual MPG), it was showing an AVG of 21mpg until I had about 2000-3000 miles on the engine. With the same driving route and normal gas stations used, it climbed to an AVG of 27mpg (according to the computer). We all know the computer isn't that accurate, but the change is pretty comparable to the actual mpg increase. But really, you will find out eventually anyway as it's not likely you are going to trade it in for bad MPG in under 3K miles.

SOOO...not very much better this time around. I got 12.773 gallons and had 225.0 on the tank, coming out to an average MPG of 17.6

A little improvement, but yea, I guess it has to do with where I'm driving. Makes me wish I had longer to drive to get to work so I could just hop on that freeway.

Hopefully it'll get better like tozfeekum and eg6motion say (I'd like to have hope, so don't ruin it for me (drive))

Drove my car for 1600 miles, all freeway miles, ok almost.
Did the calc's at every stop.
Low was 27mpg while the high was 30mpg.
At the end of the trip I had way more slips at 30 mpg that the ones at 27.
I did drive consertive, but did bump 140mph once....
In town...this car sucks....fuel that is!(cryhard)

Those are along the same numbers I get. Unless I am on the freeway constantly, breaking 250 miles is a blessing. My light usually comes on at 200 mile mark.

I remember the car doing straight highway from San Diego to Sac 360 miles til I filled her up (at 12 gallons). I remember doing half city and half highway and averaging 21 mpgs. Sadly those days are gone. I am now averaging 17 mpgs doing half city and half highway.

Lets trade car for a week and see which one of our car is worse. :'(

My last three fill ups:

27.5mpg @ 37mph ave speed
29.7mpg @ 34mph (lotsa country roads)
30.6mpg @ 52mph (this one had lots of 75mph time on the highway). That's what? Nearly 400 miles for a tank?

I calculate gas mileage and use the computer average speed for relevance. I reset all the parameters at each fill up.

OP and others - show us your average speed if you can. I think it's relevant.

Different gas mixture? I've noticed my car gets better mileage with Shell gas than any other. I've tried Unocal 76, Chevron, Arco. I've gotten bad results with Chevron/Arco. I just stick with the Shell blend and it gets me around 25-26 mpg combined, as long as I'm driving normal...(yes)

Summer blend is different fwiw

One factor that was missed when calling out all the bad science is the fill level for each fill up is not consistent unless measured. different conditions (longer nozzles, gas sloshing around, etc can contribute to going over or under the fill line making each fill up inconsistent lending to variation in you MPG calculations.

need to limit the variables:
add the exact same amount of gas each fill
same driving conditions
etc...

This is a good point, BUT for some reason this vehicle seems to be, to me, very consistent with fill height in the neck

fuel flys in, when it stops, BAM off and won't take anymore
lots of other cars you can shke the car etc and squeeze another half or more

I'm not nearly as focused on this as some other posters here, but one (predictable) factor I've noticed is the warmer temps of late, here in the NE, producing better mileage for me.
Mebbe this is the reason for the change....
with the hotter air mebbe at some point even the mazda ecu says " Hot Damn, thats TO much gas"

Will somebody tell me what the hell I'm doing wrong?? I'm on my second tank of gas (1st was dealer, 2nd I bought at chevron, 91 octane), and my fuel light just came on on the way home, at 207 miles on the dot. People are claiming 265 to the tank. Maybe I'm getting her into boost too often? I'm not sure whats going on but ppl say they drive hard and still get good mileage...

I'll let you know my mpg when I fill up tomorrow!

You are still experiencing the new owner syndrome (cheers)

you romp it every chance you get for the giggle factor

it'll pass

Update..

Two tanks from Valero. One I got around 25.4, the next 24.6. Seems to be going down..lol. I do love to sit at a stop light, floor it, and be a 1/4 mile down the road while everyone is just leaving the stoplight. Only once in a while though. :)

The car is faast. Running like a champ. And I start out the tank.. Hey I am going to get great gas mileage, but about half way, or less, I need to feel the Gs! Oh Well.
Now I did mention Sunoco and getting the bad mileage.. but I looked the other day and its a Getty.
Ill do the Getty next and see if its noticeably worse.
Mike

He must have forgot to mention he never drives it above 30 MPH, never applies the brakes, and push starts it himself from every stop.

I have had a noticable difference in mileage now that it's warmer out. The engine temps are averaging 10-15*F higher now that it's summer, however. On my last two tanks, i ran ~300 miles, whereas I typically get ~320-360 for my work commutes.

1 - You're going to kill your engine driving on 87 octane...but you probably already considered that and just accelerate reeaaaalllllly slow.
2 - People on the roads must hate you for driving reeeeallllllyyy slow in a fast car.
