Ms3 Mpg

I average 21-24mpg with mixed Highway/City/Foot to Floor driving. This is using the manual method of calculating MPG. I average about 260-280 Miles per tank.

Oh and just FYI - My Trip Computer says I get about 25-26MPG. It said this stock as well as with my mods. Thus I use the manual method.

Something doesn't seem right about your mileage. I've driven like an idiot for most of a tank and I got about 17MPG. I you in perpetual stop-and-go?
No, I leave the campus as everyone is moving, start and go. I'm in stop-and-go for about 200 yards then I'm going 25 for about 1.5 miles, stop-and-go for 50 feet, 45 until I get to the 25 zone by my house about 3 miles later. I usually run it up to about 3.5K-4K on acceleration and then it's cruise control or stable speed. Mainly no lights.
Dude(omg)(omg)(omg)(omg)
Either your car is broken, or you're flat foot shifting wherever you go.
I get 300 a tank when i'm commuting and never under 220 or so when I pretent i'm a race car driver.
I'm pretty sure with how it drives it's broken but Mazda doesn't think so.
My average last tank...wait for it...15.1mpg average. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy my car can do one thing no other 3 can. (yupnope)

You should definetly complain to Mazda about the poor MPG.

Have you checked your engine bay to make sure nothing obvious is out of place?

I have and they do nothing. Everything seems fine but periodically my transmission has a mind of it's own and slips, grinds, pops its clutch, slams gears...might have to do with it??? But Mazda can't feel what I do.
For funsies I made a thread and here's a pic!

the worst part is you're probably not even getting 15 because there's that computer shows like 12% better than your actual mpg. so you're proably getting like 14 or something

Do you reset the avg fuel economy everytime you fill up?

Since my computer was reset last night mine currently says 13.5mpg avg. Stupid cobb, making me press the peddle.

One thing I have learned is that this car doesn't like to be lugged around so I keep it around 3K while just driving around and my mileage actually increased.

I lug mine around all over the place and it seems to be content with it... I normally cruise in 6th anywhere from 30+ miles an hour... at 30 it sits at about 1,000 or so RPMs. I don't think it's a problem on the engine unless you're trying to accelerate or pushing the engine to hard in to high a gear.

Awwwwwwwwwww...crap.
drive it off a bridge
I'll try...if we had birdges I could drive it off of.
well get out of the car first though
Not sure if I'll remember to do that one though...lol

Yes, me does. that was a full tank. about 10 gallons, went about 150 miles.

I've got 2K miles on my '09 MS3 and have gotten 21-24 average every tank (hand calculated). I usually gun it a few times a tank and drive 60% highway. I had an '08 Mazda3 5 door before the MS3 and got about 26-28 avg.

Just drove from Syracuse NY to Destin Fl.

Filled up five times, not completely at all of them (wasn't fully empty), and drove straight through only stopping for restrooms and fuel.

287.5/11.5 = 25
318.5/12.3 = 25.9
168.2/6.8 = 24.7
269.6/12.1 = 22.3
238.0/11.1 = 21.4

All fillups were on 93oct, avg speed for the most part was 85mph. I might have bumped that up a little bit towards the end, that the reason for the decreased fuel economy. I was really hoping for better numbers at the beginning due to cruising at about 80mph and only using cruise control. O'well.

So how many tickets did you get....jeez

IMHO- the numbers for highway gas mileage as alluded to above are a bit dissapointing for a 2.3 4cyl. Is there anything we can do to these cars to improve highways MPG's?

One thing I have heard is that you get WORSE mileage with 93 octane vs. 91. I actually have to mix 89 + 93 to get 91, but not sure if it actually helps.

Also, will a mazdaspeed CAI improve MPG significantly?

?

the thing near the exhaust on this car is a turbo, and all this power doesn't come from using less gas. it's the nature of the beast, the car is tuned more on the performance side than the economy side.

if you want a cheap/easy way to get better fuel economy, do the speed limit.

sorry it's all so blunt, but i sure didn't get this car for it's gas mileage

Didn't get pulled over on 95 in southern Virginia?

it's still dissapointing to me. There are plenty of other small 4 cyl. turbos that get close to 30 mpg on the highway. Even huge 5-6 L V8's get 25 mpg (like the pontiac G8) on the highway! It's not like your turbo is spoolin away much when you're driving @ 2800 on the highway. just doesn't make sense to me. This has always been a sour spot for me with Mazda's- my 2.0 L Protege5 never even got 30 mpg on the highway.
