Can the MP3 take the ES2.0 from 0-60mph cause i've read on the new 2002 motortrend of the year that all new 2002 Protege's have been less weighed and all have the 130hp engine and should run 0-60mph in the 8sec range???????????????????????????????

the ES is slightly faster...the MP3 has a lot of sound deadening material.....plus the 17in rims, the sub, body kit...adds up...i think we have a few hundred lbs over the ES

I don't want to believe that the ES is faster. What's the curb weight difference between the 2? I met a guy out at the MP3 meet a month ago and he said he raced an MP3 and it walk away from him. That was on the high way though. The ES had a MHP on it.

I neither don't wanna beleive that the ES2.0 is faster but i've been reading that it has improved for the 01-02 ES protege's. And there's a Nice black ES2.0 with nice rims and a kiyoshi's sticker on the side of his back door window. The Kiyoshi's sticker is one of the top of the line performance mod shop there is around the valley in Fresno, cali. I know 2 guys that have kiyoshi's sticker on there back door window 2. One is a Black 95-99 Eclipse GS with rims and tanabe Exhaust and the other is a nice white Hatback civic body style of the Type-R. If this ES.20 is one of the customers of kiyoshi's i know that he's probably running cai intake, headers, ignitions wires and plugs like that.?????????????

I thought our rims were supposed to be lighter than others, cause they're Racing Hart's...that's kinda disappointing, cause i thought the whole point of having these "racing" rims was that they were lighter than others.....geez

curb weight for the mp3 is just under 2800, ES is just over 2600. to clear up what i posted earlier, i was just stating what i've read on the protegetech.com message boards. until we have them at a side by side race, or timeslips, we'll never know. i dont think our 10 hp gives us an advantage though. im not too sure about the weight of our wheels...

Actually, who cares if it's a little faster in a straight line. Throw in a turn or 2 and the story will be different. I guess the big question is....would you take an ES over an MP3? I know I wouldn't. It would be awesome if they made a black or white MP3.

I'm having a hard time believing this as I've already pulled away from quite a few ES's both from a start and on the highway. Not to mention around a corner. I had a ES 2.0 manual for a couple of days, and I tried to like it, I really did, but it handled to much like a "4-door" to me.

The ES is actually 2630 pounds. I'll check the mp3 later, I got the spec sheet somewhere. While we do have 17" wheels, skirts/and a sub. Don't forget we don't have ABS, or a sunroof. And while I haven't actually weighed a ES 2.0 16" wheel, I have lifted them, and the Racing harts don't seem much different. Lighter if anything.

sorry guys but its true...my wife has an es 2.0 and I drive it from time to time and its definately quicker than our mp3 :( Its very depressing... When I get in it after driving my MP3 for a while I can tell a big difference.. But throw it in a curve and smile...

ABS sucks for track driving and autocrossing anyway and I'm not too crazy about a sunroof. I'll find that one guy with the ES and ask him to run with me one night. We both have the same mods, so it could be interesting.

Of course the ES is faster. It's the same engine with minor tuning differences with a lot less weight. Although the mp3 will have the advantage in a slalom race. Just think of the obvious differences of all the body work that make the mp3 heavier, 10 hp doesn't no account for a 200lb weight difference. Also the wheel size is also an advantage for the ES being quicker, but a dissadvantage in the slalom again.

It's obvious guys come on!

triton, dude, watch out! That kyoshi's sticker prolly adds 40hp! Be particularly careful if the sticker runs the full length of the windshield or across the hood and down onto the front fender! I suggest you upgrade to a large Greddy or Skunk2(a chrome one) sticker before you attempt to go head to head with him.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! :D :D :D :D

You think stickers are good. I put a new license plate on the front of mine with the MP3 logo on it, and I'm running 9's in the 1/4 mile!

Ok, maybe not. But it "feels" faster...it really does

Anyhow, check this out.. http://www.thinkthelen.com/mazda/mp3.shtml

MP3 weight 2725
and http://www.thinkthelen.com/mazda/protege.shtml

ES 2.0 5-spd weight: 2634

difference= 91

Far cry from 200 lbs isn't it?

And to totally screw ya up... the P5 is 2716

(on another page the ES 2.0 5 spd was 2690 for the 5spd. Add another 10-20lbs for the Auto.)

Now, you going to tell me next the P5 is quicker and faster then the MP3 because it's lighter???? granted not by much.

Weight vs horsepower is VERY IMPORTANT...VERY.....but it's not the only factor.

In theory, sure, lighter is better. But, that 10 extra HP does SOMETHING. Heck take out the SUB, and spare tire and tools....what are we down to now?

....I still wanna see comparison's of the 2 cars on the SAME site or Mag before I agree to this thing eithier which way. I've driven all 3, and I don't believe it.

Don't be to proud of our little Racing Hart rims, the truth is that almost all racing rims that come stock on a car are quite a bit heavier than the real thing. If I were you I'd get over the limited production rims and just stick them in the garage. That way if you sell it you can put the stock rims on and make more out of the car and then sell the other rims separate. Personally though, I plan on keeping my mp3 around for a while so I'm not to worried about resale value and keeping the stock look. I'm gonna get some real Racing wheels and just use my stock rims for winter.

We will see that on the gragway next summer if an MP3 is faster than an ES/GT.

I did 16.4 with my ES and one of my friend is running 16.05 and both of our car are STOCK.

16.05 ??????

hummmmmm............ you're friend is a better driver than any of the professional drivers that have taken the a protege down the track. remarkable!
