MP3 Header

hehe not all cars with two cats have 2 02 sensoers just cause we have OBD2 on the cars. drive down we will put it on my lift at my shop.by the way do see a egr valve on the car.if not check your muffler bearing :p

Our cars have two cats and a resonator. The first cat is right at the header and the second cat is about 1ft. or so behind the first cat. The resonator is the long tube behind the second cat. I had the resonator removed as well. It makes the exuast a little louder but it's not that bad.

I have a bit of a logic question for you guys. Why, if our motor is the same 2.0L as the protege5 and protege es and lx, do we haveand extra 10hp at the flywheel? I know that the exhaust system is different. but the extra cat would basically void out that hp. So where did the extra power come from, could it be that we actually have the J-spec exhaust cam or not? Just something to think about.

They also tuned the ECU. So who knows, but I know one thing for sure...There IS alot of power this car is holding back. We just have to unleash it.
The cats can go, that stupid, restrictive header can go, and with a few more mods this car has great potential if you ask me. :D

The extra HP came from the Dual Stage intake manifold, exhaust cam, and more aggresive ECU timing. Those are the only things I know of that give us the extra. From my opinion, the only way we're really gonna unleash the extra ponies is by an aftermarket header. Removing the cat from the factory header will probably to some good, but I won't do that. I'd rather replace the whole thing. ;) Just my .02 Cents

It is most definately the exhaust manifold that's holding back most of the engine's power. If you go to the Racing Beat home page they talk about this in a little more detail there. They say that they couldn't fix this in the time that Mazda allowed for them to tune it. So as for me, I'm saving up for when an aftermarket header comes out that doesn't cost $739. That's way too much. But be patient, it will come. Has anyone looked under the car to see if all the pipes are mandrel bent or crush bent? If crush bent, you could replace all the pipes with mandrel bent when you get a header and it will drasticaly increase the power even more.

I just wanted to put my 2 cents here.

The motor code on the MP3 and the P5 is FS-DE not the j-spec FS-ZE.

The exhaust cam on both cars are the same, the intake runners are different on the two cars. The ECU has been reprogrammed by Mazda to give the extra power to the MP3.

The MP3 only has a muffler change by Racing Beat. That is why Racing Beat is coming out with cat back exhaust for the Protege Sedan and also the P5.

I do believe the exhaust is crush bent piping. Manderal bend piping would help all of us out.

The cams on Mazda Motorsports is going to give us an increase in power, but it is not stock on the MP3.

I have seen on either Corksport or Mazda Motorsports an uncut FS-ZE cam that has to ground down.

The exhaust pipes are mandrel bent( has pictures of it). I need to post the photos butI would have pictures if it wasn't for that damn accident I had in august. I'll have the pics up soon and I'll send them in.

POP Quiz......Does anyone know what the DE on the FS-DE stands for...... :D Just wondering if anyone else knows. It carries the same meaning on the SR20DE & DET

i just wanted to post about the removing cats thing. removing your cats will only gain you 1-4 hp. i had a vw golf tdi and i put a straight pipe and dynoed it and i gained 10 hp and a crap load of torque. i then had the cat removed and i gained 1 hp. in my opionion that is a waste of time for 1 hp. now removing both may free up a little more than 1 hp but not much more.

ive also got a question about the intake cam. do i have to get a fuel management computer like apex or will the car run fine without any timing or fuel mods. also will it set off a cel. i know my car has been going crazy bc of the racing beat exhaust. mazda told me the computer was very sensitive to the change in exhaust flow.

All 2.0 liter Proteges have the FS-DE motor in it. The 1.8 liter I think is FP-DE. That's why the cams will work for the 1.8 liter and 2.0 liter. They have the same head.

But, for 2002 all Proteges are supposed to have the 2.0 liter.

I have a question about the "unground cam". If you buy that, will there be instruction about to what specifications the machine shop will have to shave it to? Or will they just know what to do with it? And why don't they do this before selling it to you?

So are the intake cams on corksport (The FS-ZE ones) ready to be installed? Or do they have to be shaved? Seems stupid to sell them unshaved if they are J-Spec meant for the 2.0 liter....

From my understanding yes they are ready to install.

Your best bet on those type of questions (ready to install and such) is to ask for Derek at Corksport. He is the man for questions on Proteges there.

Mike

Cool thanks. I'll have to keep Derek in mind in the coming year when I start doing stuff. Again, thanks for the info!
