megan catback

well i just bought it the shipping was 50 bucks so the total was 300 cant wait to get it and install it yay

I got my Megan Racing catback in about a week ago and put it on last weekend. The kit only came with 2 gaskets and you need 3. You can't re-use the one after the cat because it's the wrong type. I tried and had a bad leak at that joint. Plus the rear flange of the resonator pipe was hitting my heat shield pretty badly and the tip had wandered to the driver's side of the cutout.

So I went to Advance and bought a $1.14 gasket and $2 worth of small hose clamps and I just spent the last hour under the car again trying to fix everything. Good news / bad news.

The good news is that the gasket (with a little modification) worked and there's no more exhaust leak. Also, the hose clamps (an idea from somebody on this forum - forget who) worked to locate the rear muffler in the cutout just perfectly.

The bad news is that I'm still beating the crap out of my heat shield. The resonator pipe just rides too high in the tunnel. I got it centered tonight and even bent the heat shield away from the pipe by pushing it up into the tunnel a little. Didn't work. Looks like I get to spend one more day under there.

Some of you had asked for pics on the other thread I started. I posted some of the rear muffler here .

I guess I'll try to get pics of the whole thing next time I'm under there.

How do you like the sound????

The sound of the exhaust is very nice. It's actually a little milder than what I expected. I would describe it as understated. It's a perfect daily-driver sound - may not be enough for some people for the track. In the low RPMs it's deep, mellow, resonant without being boomy. Up high it's very quiet - you have to have all the windows down to hear the high-RPM sound from it. I took the silencer right out from the beginning - don't like those two holes for the silencer-retaining bolts, though. There is absolutely no buzzing and I haven't noticed any droning. The tone is a little louder decelerating against the engine (for those of us with manual transmissions) than accelerating, but that makes for cool-sounding heel-toe downshifts.

Now I just need to take care of that blasted heat shield!

I'm planning to get some video or maybe mp3 sound clips in the near future. Keep an eye on this post for that.

I just took my heatshield off and bent it into shape with a pair of long pliers. It has just recently started rattling a little when the car starts up but I would imagine a set of motor mounts would stop that. Would it be really bad to just remove the heatshield altogether?

I removed mine when I put on my megan catback about 5 months ago, no problems as of yet. The damn thing still hits the heatshield under the rear seats though...

Wait...are you talking about the heatshield under the car or over the manifold?

EDIT: I thought there was only one heatshield underneath the car...but then again I may not have been paying attention.

Under the car, above the cat. That's the one I removed.

Ohhh, I'm talking about the one right under the shift linkage. That's the one that is rattling.
I believe we're talking about the same one. That's where the second cat is. ;)

We probably are. I thought the second cat was closer up under the engine? I don't know, it's friday and I'm probably talking out of my ass right now. You don't have any problems with your shifter getting hot in your hand or any burning of the undercarage?

Na, and when I first removed it I was paranoid, constantly checking the shift boot and surrounding area for heat. Nothing, but I'm still gonna keep my fingers crossed.

I just removed my heat-shield as well...The one under the car, behind the shift linkage is above the resonator, not the second cat....I've been checking the heat and it doesn't seem to bad...I've even taken the cupholder surround plate out and driven around for an hour....Mine was buzzing like hell, even before I put in an exhaust....So it's not necessarily the exhaust hitting it, it may just be buzzing. Anyway....sound clips will be nice, as the old ones are no longer hosted....

I'm thinking less drastic... They make a rubberized underbody spray and if I can't bend my heat shield out of the way I'm just gonna coat the thing so it's not such a metallic ringy sound. Should deaden the clang right out.

Those clips of the Megan Racing cat-back on the Mitsu is nothing like what it sounds like on our P5s. Look at the tip compared to my previously posted pics - it's about half the size. It's not the same exhaust. That one sounds buzzy compared to mine. Guess I'd better go out and get a video of my own.

lol sorry for posting my clips- I wasn't trying to give an idea of what it may sound like on your P5- as it IS a different exhaust 3''. Plus you have to remember this is a 4G63 motor with a lumpy sounding idle because of the cams.

I was just posting my review of the megan exhaust and quality in general.

Make sure you get something that takes heat well, you don't want your car to smell like fresh asphalt all the time...I just yanked the little piece of tin out and assumed it didn't do much of anything anyway....I didn't throw it away, I still have it and would put it back in if anything got hot in the shift linkage. I beleive a lot of people end up taking it off when they install their short shifter...It hits the shield fromt the top...Anyway, good luck...I'll let everyone know if anything melts in my car from the shield being gone...:)
