mazdaspeed exhaust has arrived

haha, whatever you gotta tell yourself to save money. if i had 500 bucks, i'd probably get a cd deck and speakers. stock sound system sucks compared to my tC. that would suck having to take it off for every oil change though... i take my car to the dealer for oil changes, btw

Going to resurrect this thread to ask a question that no one seems to have clearly answered...how is cabin drone with this versus stock? I absolutely HATE when the exhaust is droning on the freeway.

Most of my passengers ask if the stock exhaust really is stock, so I have to wonder how much louder the CBE is while just bumming around town.

Thanks in advance.

Good to hear. So at 70-80mph there's really no noise into the cabin? The 3 seems to have surprisingly good sound deadening but that muffler is awfully tiny.

nope. Windows down it's more wind noise. Windows up it's not noticeably louder. Give it gas.....it's apparent but not over bearing at all.

so how is this holding up?

mostly posting so I can find this thread again when I'm ready for a Mazdaspeed exahaust, likely later this year or next year.

looks like I may be picking up a used MS CBE soon...if all things work out.

So inside the cabin, is it alot louder than stock? My wife's having twins in the spring, they'll mostly be in her Edge but occasionally they'll go in my MS3 so my big worry now is the noise in the back for the babies.

Blue:

It's not much louder than stock. Infact, it's less loud on the freeway and off-throttle drone is almost non-existent. However, people have told me they can definitely hear me coming from down the street, versus before where you couldn't tell until I was almost infront of the house during that off-throttle engine braking.

One friendly tip when installing the MSCBE: there is a section where the two pipes slip together and are clamped tight. There is also a line marked on the pipe showing you where they should fit. If you line it up at the marker or over it, the exhaust will knock against the car during hard bumps. However, if you pull it too far away, the clamp won't seal and you'll have an exhaust leak. I do, and still have this issue where a tiny pinhole area right where the two pipes are joined is slowly puffing soot onto the outside of the exhaust piping.

When you install it, start the car and get underneath so you can hear if it leaks or not. We had it on a lift and we started the car, then lifted it back up while it was idling and kept noticing it and adjusting it until we could get there as close as possible. Unfortunately, it's still not fixed so we may try some copper gasket spray or buy a 2nd 3" clamp to put next to the first one.

But you will not regret the throaty Subie sound that comes from this exhaust. You will however, lose a smidge of low end torque, but the higher rpms climb quicker.

This is a quality piece and definitely has a sweet sound.

Have you addressed the restrictive dp/rp first?

With respect, unless you have upgraded to an aftermarket DP/RP, there will be no power gain from this or any other CBE. The true restriction is upstream in the factory dp/rp and low-flow cats and the restriction is so substantial that opening up the CBE is really meaningless from a power point. There is no basis to expect a power gain unless you exceed 300 whp and it takes fixing the restrictions upstream. Even then, the stock K04 turbo's maximum exhaust turbine flow rate is less than the flow rate of the stock CBE. The stock CBE flows that well.

But the MSCBE sure does have a sweet sound.
