Mazda6 Reliability?

Hey, guys!

J.D. Power's Initial Quality Survey came out today, and Mazda got slammed as a manufacturer. However, it only reports on the brand as a whole and not as an individual model. I'm looking at getting a Mazda6 5-door, and I would like to find reliability results to date for the 6. Does anyone know where I can find it? Consumer Reports says it's above average "based on customer survey results", but I'd like something more concrete if anyone knows where to get it.

Thanks!

I guess Mazda didn't pay off J.D. Power as much as the other makes this year.

my thoughts exactly. im sure the MSP doesnt help the reliabilty factor (no offense, just the truth).

my friend just ordered a titanium or silver or whatever mazda6 wagon. i convinced him to leave nissan and come to mazda :D

well I had mine hit by a cargo truck(UPS Style) and in another incounter almost ran off the highway...so far tore up rims and tires...but alignment and drivability (other than tire condition) is still like new and when I had it checked out everything but rims and tires were in great condition for all that it went thru...took a beating and still going strong...my other car need anignments from the D.C. streets alone in 300 miles of being here...I have 2020 miles and 2 incidents and no alignment needs yet...thats quality.(wiggle)

What all did you do to fix your car after it got hit by that truck. Do you really like your mazda. i want one but i want to find out more about them before i get one so at least i know what i'm buying.

Thats bulls***, Mazda getting slammed for reliability?
Yup... However, the Proteg/P5 is (was) one of the most reliable cars on the market. So is the MPV, and so was the Millennia.

However, Mazda is a tale of two companies -- High-quality Japanese cars and crappy Ford-infected trucks. I think the B Series, the Tribute, the MSP, and the RX-8 really hurt them this year.

Not to mention how incredibly accurate and unbiased JD Powers is.

I Pooh Pooh anything they report. You should too :)

my car has just at 16K miles now. this is my third mazda, longest lasting brand so far-my 626 had 150K on it and was 13 yrs old when i traded it, nothing wrong with it, except the brakes were horrible.

6 was parked and truck was backing...missed every body part and only hit the rim....I had to fight the steering wheel to get the key to turn...alignment and drivetrain was still as it was when I got it...Via mazda technictions(sp?)....so just the rim......
estimate is like almost $500 dollars!!!! (nuts) ....thats just for one rim being mounted on the stock tire and balanced plus aditional alignment check....I got a set of 17" rims and tires from a Mz3 for $550 on the way. Since it has been like 3 months now and 2 cels. As for quality only the ford trannys suck....

I said I had 2 petpieves with the car.....
1.)Doors not locking when you shift out of park (got over it)
2.)Hollow exhaust note (Got CAI...ordering a Catback later in may)

I kinda like the feature about the doors not locking when shifting from park. That always kinda scares me, what happens if you get in an accident, they have to use The Jaws to get you out.

here in D.C. that is a must had safety feature....kinda keeps you inside the car while sitting at the stoplight camera at night. plus if you roll enough times or get hit hard on the sides "god forbid".... the door(s) won't open regardless.

In my experiences from having a Duratec V6 in my SVT Contour and from friends of mine that own Taurus', that the engine is pretty much bulletproof. Other than that, what do you consider "reliable"? For me, if the car starts on the first try everyday, that is reliable. If my door panel falls off, that is "annoying" but the car is still reliable.

Yeah - much as we dump on Ford otherwise, that Duratec block they lent to Mazda as the base of the V6 in the 6s is a most excellent unit - Cosworth/Porsche designed!

Overall, the reliability o the 6 has been stellar for a first year car - it can only get better!

the jd power inital quality survey was not based on the p5, msp, or protege. it is only based on the amount of problems owners have had within the first year of the 2004 models (the3, 6, tribute, rx-8, b series, etc).

some of these are new models and new moels, regardless of the manufacturer tend to have issues. lets also not forget that the 6 had 2 recalls and the rx-8 had one aswell. im sure that factored in negatively.

btw, i posted the entire report last week and it got no replys

JD Powers' Initial Quality Survey is just that. I wouldn't pay it much mind, because it is NOT a reflecition of long-term reliability.

Car and Driver as well as Edmunds concluded their long term tests of the 6 and rated it very highly, except for the usual silly nitpicks that ANY car would be susceptible to.

I don't know about other models, but between me and my wife we have had six different brands of cars.
All besides Mazda had been money traps for repairs.
Heck I had a '93 escort wagon that wore a hole into it's own intake manifold.

My wife had a '99 protege when I got married.
Besides a tire and windsheild crack the car has zero problems from day one.

The only reason we traded it in, was because of a crappy interest rate (and loan) and that it was over 50,000 miles.
In trade we got a '03 Protege LX, and so far it's been perfect also.

I did read a recent report (in Car and Driver I think)
It listed reliability over time, and Mazda was number 5, ahead of other 'common' car companies.
(Volvo and a few others were listed higher)

yep...4cyl not being as potinent as others in it's class and cramped back seat.....? 4cyl doesn't have a turbo....thats all it's missing and as for back seat....it's a 6 not a H2.

I like the car alot....the interior doesn't look as elegant as the others but who cares it still looks "Grown Up" and the name "Mazda 6" sounds as if there is more to see...or "mysterious" cause everyone hears about them but never actualy understood them enough to talk bad about them (sssh) I say lets write a review on JD Powers' Initial Quality Survey and go from there.

P.S. plus it's the only car that if 2 parked next to each other you can say "Bad ass pair of sixes"
