Mazda2 Roof Rack Installed

I decided to go with Mazda's base rack since it had the supports already built into the roof. Install was easy, took about an hour since I didn't know how it went together and had to follow the directions.

Here are some finished pics...

That's exactly what I was worried about. That's why I went with Thule... the mazda rack here in MD is simply a modified Thule design... except the Thule rack is like $100 cheaper. Why is it that we get so screwed here in the states on everything INCLUDING ACCESSORIES... how is it cheaper for Mazda to have 2 different racks for the 2?

Yeh, weird. I think yours are the "areo" bars and mine are the regular Thule... I wanted black but these do cause some wind howl so I have a fairing ordered that should be here this week. Those pics will follow too. :)

Even with the Aero bars there was a howl... I went & got the surfboard air deflector thingy. Took a little ingenuity, but I got it to fit, & manage to squeeze in my yakima basketcase underslung style.

Looks good, man. Which carrier is that, and does the hatch hit it. I've had a heck of a time finding a carrier that doesn't keep the hatch from opening all the way.

Thanks, I like this setup. It's the Yakima HighRoller (I love this bike rack) and it does hit the hatch. I think about attaching a cord from the inside of my hatch to the top of the cargo box I built that stops it just short of hitting so I don't have to hold it... we'll see.

Slolane, I wasn't sure about the square bars, but now that you have the "surfboard" air deflector, and that bike rack... +10

I love taking something as quintessentially japanese as the 2, and slapping roof bars on it, all euro style! :D

(PS: Now sticker that deflector up!)

I'm curious as to how hard it is to put on/take off any of the racks that use the factory mounting points...hoping to get a rack eventually, but only want to install it when I need to use it (which wouldn't be too often).

Not bad at all. We have an inno rack on my wife's 5 and it has the same mounting system. The towers have feet that bolt into the mounting points, which is probably the only mildly time consuming step. Then the towers just clip on to the feet and tighten up. When we take the rack off, we just unclip the towers from the feet leaving the crossbars through the towers so the front and rear assemblies just lift right off leaving only thefeet. Then there are little plastic covers that go over the feet. Doesn't look bad with just the feet on, and saves a bunch of time. We only take the rack off the 5 for long road trips.

I've decided to get this rola setup, and I'm hoping its a similar setup as the inno....particularly with the low profile "feet" even though I'll probably just leave the rack on most of the time.

Ahh, so there are threaded inserts under the mounting point covers on the roof? Is it easy to take those covers on and off? I'd seriously only be using the rack like 2 or 3 times a year, mostly just when we get relatively lightweight but bulky items from the store (replacement interior doors for the house, flat-packed bookshelves from Ikea, etc).

My wife did the first part, but I don't think it was too bad getting the covers off. For your purposes, you'd likely be better off with a yakima q-tower type setup that would work without using the factory mount points. I'll have a better idea of how quick the whole process is in a week or two once my rack system comes and I install it.

Does anyone have pics of the bike trays that they have installed? Lining things up with some old trays I had, doesn't seem like I will be able to open the hatch with them installed?
