Chris, come play in STS2! Lemme know if you want to co-drive an event or 2. Or more...
Awesome, I'll take the opportunity!

It's definitely better for me to actually drive the car that I might purchase instead of going all out($-wise) to find the right one, test ride only to find out that I don't fit or something stupid.

so far, I don't have a co-driver lined up, so if you want a couple events, lemme know.

There is a 99 Protege that is already set up and is a front runner in the NW for sale, I'll try to find it, it's fully sorted for IT and was around $6000 with a bunch of spares. I'll post a link when I find it.

Thank you Britt. Let me know if you find the link; I saw an ITA Protege for sale awhile back on Imp. Touring forums. I'm in MD, so that's a bit far if I were to pursue that car, and I don't think I'd fly to WA and pick it up without seeing it run/knowing the guy.

sm76: Thanks for all the advice. It definitely helps me know what to look for and budget things accordingly. I'm hoping the PT race series grows on the East Coast because I like attending NASA events, and my region (Mid Atlantic) seems to be pretty good with events at Summit's tracks and VIR. If PT grows well, I wouldn't even worry about SCCA.

I'll probably only make a few track weekends this year because I'm trying to run a full season of autox in STS with the DC SCCA.

I checked out a couple Proteges yesterday afternoon, but none peaked my interest. The only ones I found local were 1.6L models and one ES automatic. Do all of the ES model Proteges have sunroofs?

Nope. Atleast not 99-2000. I have a 2000 ES, 5spd, with no sunroof. From what I recall when I was buying the car new, the sunroof was in a big (expensive) package deal with Side Airbags and ABS, So the factory sunroof is not that prevailent in those years. The ABS would be a nice feature (tire saver!), but trying to delete the sunroof and change to 5spd would be troublesome. The 99-2000's appear to be cheap and readily available, but most of them are autos (used in the rental car market). You just have to keep looking for that 5spd! Try Carmax.
