I just purchased my 2016 CX-5 GT (FWD) yesterday and am loving it of course. I'm playing with the infotainment system and am also wondering if anyone has made apps for it yet? It uses something called OpenCar; I guess an open source car app initiative...
I am looking to pickup a NAV SDcard online too and do some further non-destructive tinkering (like mood lights).
Thanks!

OpenCar apps cannot actually run in any production vehicle. I believe they're partnering with Mazda in some capacity, but they've only ever shown their stuff working at auto shows - nothing actually on the road.

It's a chicken and egg problem - they can't get developers to build apps until the developers know that there are cars that will run them, but they can't get manufacturers on board to bring the cars until they have developers.

Their website pretends that they already have both, but on their developer forums they quietly admit that all they have today is a simulator.

There is, however, a giant thread on mazda3revolution where folks have figured out how to get SSH into the infotainment box, figured out that the UI running there is actually HTML5/JS on some terribly old version of Opera (pre-Blink, IIRC), and started building some custom apps directly on what Mazda shipped.

The Infotainment Project:

The Enhanced Compass app (no navigation, but free instead of buying the NAV SD):

Great info, thanks guys! I'll check it out for sure.
I also saw a remote app called Mobile Start. I don't suppose that is built into the vehicle? Likely need a remote start module??
