Maxx Mazda's 2011 Build Thread

Fantastic Idea...

Its probably better to just break transmissions all over the palce..

There is no need for all this "Veil Of Darkness"

It isnt a Military Jet... Its an Econobox...

Can you just post your plan Drama Queen...

No I'm not, I legitimately haven't worked it out yet. What I want to do is have the stock input shaft and pinion shaft machined, as well as the gearsets from a "known strong" transmission that I can obtain cheaply and run needle bearings to mate the gears to the shafts. Simple as that. I would run the synchro assemblies from the swapped in gears, and simply have some custom forks machined to work with the stock rods and drum, but the swapped hubs.

Why do this instead of PAR? I am ******* sick of pumping thousands after thousands of dollars into this car. It's not as "fun" as it used to be anymore. I figure this could be accomplishe for around $1500. That's a few thousand cheaper than a full PAR setup.

Awesome what trans are you going to source gears from?

Par is not that expensive

You could fix your problem for $700... Replace 3rd.

Then when 2nd blows, another $700. Then when 4th blows, yup another $700. Not to mention replacing whatever else is taken out when there's chunks of gear flying around inside the case.

I have had ZERO time to research viable options so far. It's even crossed my mind to stay within the Mazda family and pull the guts out of the Euro spec Mazda 6 MPS. I really like the ratios in that trans, and they're built like a brick shithouse from what I understand. Before anyone asks, I will not be attempting any form of 6 speed conversion. It'd be nice, but 5 gears with the right ratios will work out just fine.

sweet well i look forward to see what you come up with.

Some sort of bearing reinforcement would really help keep things where their supposed to be in our wimpy case or any others that you could squeeze in there and still go in a straight line :)

You made my point.. You want to run 18 PSI daily... PONY UP or Lower your Boost or Sell the car

Why be on a budget. Fix this thing properly now, instead of screwing around with more OEM Garbage that might or might not survive.

I'd have no problem spending $2K on a transmission if It would be bulletproof. Problem is, a "full out" built one such as yours runs a cool $8000. I'm a pilot, I don't have that kind of cash sitting around burning a hole in my wallet I'm afraid. And if I did there a million and one other things I'd rather spend it on than a transmission.

I'm just about done with this car. The platform is dying, and I refuse to keep dumping money into it. I've spent probably $50K to date, and I'm still not happy with the fucken thing. You've spent much more than that on yours I'm sure, was it worth it? As for "OEM garbage that might or might not survive" what's saying the PAR setup will survive either? People have broken them too. All it takes is a hairline crack or manufacturing defect, and its game over OEM or not.

This isn't a 1300HP drag Toyota Supra. It's a 2600lb grocery getter that I blast to the mountains and back with on sunny days. I think I put 6,000Km on it in the last 5 years. Point is, I need to make this car "fun" again. Not just to drive, but to work on, too. If I can put together a transmission for $2K that will hold what I need it to and a little more, I'll be happy with that. Sure, custom ratios and double cone synchros are awesome, but at the end of the day, it's still just a car.

What about the Mazdaspeed 3? Can it not be adapted? It can't be too hard to find, car's been around since '07. Plenty of kids have totaled them by now.

There are two things about the MSP I hate. One is shaking at high idle, and one is noise.

The straight cut gears would be a massive noise I could not tolerate even if I converted the MSP to a track car. They aren't really an option for me, and I assume not an option for Maxx Mazda either.

Speed and comfort don't have to be mutually exclusive but it costs a ton. I think every car has an inflection point where the law of diminishing returns kicks into overdrive and it's better off to move on to another platform.

I am not downplaying the cool factor of a Protege street killer since they are incredibly rare, and both your cars are works of art, but if you stop at that inflection point you still have a very rare and awesome Protege and you can put the rest towards a car that can reach your goals much easier.

I did that with the MX-6 and C6 7 years ago. Now with the MSP and the S4. If only garage space wasn't so damn expensive.
