My two test drives with a CX-5 manual transmission were great. I loved the manual and it helps the CX-5 feel more like a car than an SUV.
Having said that, even if the manual is pulled directly from your MX-5, it's still a crossover and not a car.
So, drive it for yourself and expect a really good manual stick and clutch pedal. Let us know what you think.
But, be prepared for the overall experience to be different from a car. I'm still adjusting to driving a crossover, but more and more happier with my CX-5 as I do.
Not having had the pleasure of driving a Miata, I cannot say. BUT, I came from a manual Toyota Matrix with 5 spd and have now had my 6spd manual CX5 Sport for a year and I love it.
I test drove the 2.0 in both Auto and Manual and I'm happy with my choice. The only way they could get me to switch is to offer the 2.5 with a manual... then I might have to upgrade.

I have manual CX5 and MX5, 92 stock clutch and shifter.
CX5 smoother, easier to engage, lighter effort, and not as short as Miata, miata has a click click feel to to, CX5 clutch is very light and very easy to modulate.
I think is all marketing, but definitely very good.
for my use, 2.0L is sufficient but if they have 2.5L as an option and with 2mpg hit but 1 sec faster 0-60 I might consider it. the 2.0L is plenty strong pulling full load up the steep grades, just down shift to 4 or 5, that is why I think manual 2.0L is a good enough combo, no one believe me I can get 33-34 mpg aver, they all thought it is a hybrid.

The manual transmission was not enjoyable. I have been spoiled by the miata.
I liked the AT. I am looking to lease a sport model with AT.
What would be a good deal with no money down?

So why is your fuelly average 31.3? (a more believable figure)
If I can average 34.4 with my auto than its possible to average that and more with a manual. It's all in how you drive. You're welcome to check out my fuelly.
Edhchoe, you should start with the price and then negotiate the lease. A good price for a FWD sport in my area is 22,700 to 23,000. It's much better to buy then lease especially with the really low financing available right now. I leased once and will never do that again.
You could be paying that exact same $314 mo for 60 months financing (2.0%) if you put down the $6500 you probably got for you MX5 on a $23,000 purchase price and paying 6.25% sales tax. Then you would own it at the end of your term instead of having to give it back and possibly paying mileage overage charges and extra wear and tear.

I'm guessing you were leasing your Miata, also, because I hope you didn't trade it in for free, like it sounds like you did.

so ok, overall ave of 31 or so, but after first oil change the mpg have improved, my last few tanks have been ave. 33 or so. it will take a while for the fuelly to reflect that.
I had the miata for 15 months. I had financed for 60 months with no money down.
What I owed was what it was worth according to kbb. Dealer agreed to pay off my loan.
I had the miata ad running on CL for over a month to see if I could sell on my own to make enough to offset the lost sales tax for trade in but not even one person called.
So by trading in I saved on sales tax. This is my first leased vehicle and I hope to keep the car for the full term. I have been averaging about one car a year in the last ten years.
For me the manual CX5 is really good. But nothing like my miata. Two totally different feels. But the 5's marriage between clutch and shifter is perfectly matched to the character of the car. Where the Miata's is sharp and quick with a snick into each gear, such is the overall experience driving a Miata. The 5 is softer all around, with a long clutch pedal requiring little effort and a soft rubbery thump for the longish shift throw into each gear. Another way to put it, if the cx5 is a kitchen knife, the miata is a razor blade.
