according to my source at mazda, the differentials are on constant backorder due to widespread failure. the bearings are also Ford in origin, if I recall right they share a part number with one from a Ford Mustang.

so what happened? what was the issue? did it break while you were turning hard or what? What was the symptom? Could you even use the tranny or was it all messed up?

thank u captain, yes JDM Sam's is on backorder right now
it took me seven weeks to get one for Refoxxel. I got one of four in the nation, so I can tell you these will be VERY slow in coming.

i pulled out of my drive way shifted to first, started to go and it made a strange grinding noise. pulled it out of gear waited a second, hit the clutch popped it into first, same thing but this time it didnt really move.

i got real lucky then, when mine went out in ... feb. i believe, it took 2 weeks of arguing with the dealer about who was going to pay for it, then another 2 weeks to get the part. i couldnt image seven more weeks

MAn, Engines popping, LSD's cracking in half, Plastic IC pipes breaking, A/C units leaking, the damn clunk, warped/rusty rotors, blow subs, radios that go haywire, front struts that go bad, leaky turbos, leaky Coolant lines, and many other issues that the MSP has. Its a wonder that they do not offer to just buy the cars back from us, and pretned it never happend.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I had an output seal go on my car in Dec. They replaced 2nd and 3rd gear syncros. Im just waiting for the whole damn thing to just fall off the car now.

how much did they quote you to fix it? parts and labor?

lol damn i think ill save for the quiafe lsd after reading this. i would hate to spend over a thousand including labor only for it to break and then try to argue that it wasnt my fault.

yea craig, i hear ya. someone told me they couldnt believe i called the msp problematic

It breaks when going straight. Thats when power is being applied to both wheels fully and the most stress is on the differential.. Wheelhop and accelerating hard on rough pavement is all it really takes to crack the three little spot welds that are holding the LSD together. Mine went at around 10000 miles. very weak point in the MSP Drivetrain.

Symptoms include, loud grinding, and no go. You will first hear a loud pop. Mine broke when leaving a stop light at granny speed, so they can weaken and then break later when you least expect it. try to avoid wheelhop and hard acceleration across bumps like rail road tracks or rough pavement.

What the guys said above^. Give it gas & no go. Heres some pics of it I took today when I went to go inspect it. POS Differential. One pic is where the differential is next to the gear its supposed to be attached to but it's not.

EDIT: Pictures added at the request of JDM Sam

I could have sworn that the LSD was made by tochigi fuji sangyo? Doesn't sound very much like Ford to me....

I had a Quaife LSD on my EG hatch (B18C-5 swap) a couple years back, and that thing snapped as well. Any differential will break under serious stress and wear (i.e. drag racing, hard launches, etc.)

quote from this site
http://www.sae.org/automag/techawards/2002/page5.htm
"The Super LSD (limited-slip differential) from Tochigi Fuji Sangyo KK includes a core clutch developed to work well with the strut suspension found in front-wheel-drive vehicles. The unit also works well in the front axle of four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles. Compared to other torque-sensing LSDs, the Super LSD has a lower torque bias ratio (1.5-2.0), which fits well with front suspension systems. Production costs are lower because of similarities to open differentials, and the device can be lubricated with standard differential fluid or ATF. The system can easily replace open differentials because it uses many of the same components and features identical installation points. The device provides good handling and control as well as a cost reduction."

A POS CHEAP LSD!

Compare the pic below to the one above. You can obviously see the half that snapped off. The other half is in the drive gear. Yea I want a KAAZ not a Queefer LSD.
