Hi, in owner's manual page 5-14: Second gear mode is the reason why you stopped and the gear is fixed in 2nd. Hope it helps.

What you are talking about is an action the driver takes after the vehicle has come to a stop. Going to 2nd gear fixed mode. This is not what I'm talking about.

What I am saying is that when coming to a stop, I expect the transmission to automatically revert to first gear unless I purposefully put it in second. What I am finding is that the vehicle will (at times) only automatically downshift to second. Then the start is in second gear at times when you would expect it to be starting in first because you hadn't chosen the fixed second gear start manually.

mine does this too

Stays in second

I had some experience on this. But that's for the manual mode.

I always started at first gear. If it doesn't come back to the first, I'll force it to. But sometimes it will not come back to first gear even if I did force it back to first. I think it might be the reason that I shifted to the second too fast (the engine rotation was less than 2000RPM). Especially when I was stuck in the traffic, I switched to the second, and immediately I have to stop. So, at times, the gear got confused. It just simply thought that I was in the Second gear fixed mode.

This didn't happen very often, but it did happen to me from time to time. I still haven't figured out how to make the gear used to my driving habbit. Let us know how your car learn your way of driving.

Mine suddenly doesn't feel as gutsy either but I attributed that to me driving the turbo wagon the other day and just messing with my senses. :( Although it still seems to be missing something even after a week of not driving the wagon.

Me too! Now I'm sure we are all having a mass hallucination and I'm not any crazier than any of you. So, I guess we're in good company! Seriously, is there any way to ensure the second gear fixed mode can be turned off? I read the manual and followed the instructions, but I don't notice a real difference.

I havent noticed a drop in turbo at all . . .i think maybe the way the turbo works because I have learned to drive this car correctly. Not to say the car is impossible to get used to, but it def took me maybe almost 1k miles to really learn the pedal/throttle dynamics of the car - to minimize the turbo kick in certain situations, like stop/go, breaking on the highway then punching etc. This is my first turbo, ever, so jumping into this ride from a Honda V6 was quite a different experience.

I don't think that we're all discussing the same thing.

1. Some are discussing turbo lag, which is an inherent phenomenom, and which may vary from vehicle to vehicle.

2. Some are discussing a change in performance of their vehicle which is sporadic, and may, or may not have to do more with transmission issues. (I believe that this was where the thread started.)

3. We briefly discussed knock from heat, which is a totally separate issue.

Let's get it together!!!

They said there's nothing wrong with it. Of course, my frackin luck.

I took a drive with the Service Mgr and explained the difference to him. He said the mechanic who drove it was in a new class at Mazda the next day and he would ask about this in the class.

They replaced the gas cap, and flashed the computer, which I assume is a firmware/software upgrade.

It seemed to help a little, but now I can't drive as fast. Weird, the turbo kicks in earlier about 2300 rpm at around 70-72 mph. I generally drive 75+, so this means I can't without always having the turbo engaged. Before, the turbo kicked in around 2500 rpm at 78-80 mph.

This is frustrating to say the least.
