Lean mixture problem: Turbo

ok so what happened to u in the first place. now im starting toget scared. im running a lil lean but i think it may be wrong some how. i have the rspeed meter. its running a tad lean but i dont understand. everything is fine. i did a compression test and everything was perfect. i have at least 1000 miles on the turbo. what happened to ur car? what problems??
thanks
mike

The car runs fine, but I just had this feeling that something was going wrong and stopped from using the car anymore until doing the compression check.

OVERBOOSTs killed my piston.

Remember guys, this was my mistake, first of all, I overboosted 2 times 20psi but not on WOT.

But the one that really finished the piston, was an overboost of 9psi in 3rd gear and clutch slip...but thats me just trying to figure the worst scenario.

well besides from ruining ur piston, that must of sucked. but what the hell kinda power were u getting when over boosting to 20psi?? how did it feel?

You really wanna know how it feels?

20 psi overboost is like.....FLOORING THE BRAKES...a HARD STOP.

Just dont go over 7psi, trust me 7psi is so damn good. But...the stock fuel pump will lag on more than 7psi, I was running sometimes in 7.5 psi and I noticed that the fuel pump is slow to compensate on hard launches. But if you slowly get to that psi it will work just fine. But as I see this, the pump will not last long if you wanna do 8psi daily and reliable.
But, im not a pro, im a newbie, this is only my opinion

yea im not going over 7psi without anything else done. im hoping to pic up terrys stage 4 when it comes out:D but even then i wouldnt wanna run high boost daily. i just dont feel safe even with the engine management.

Sorry to hear the news. So for those of us who don't entirely know what this means . . .what happened? Piston fried, head gasket blown?

Igdrasil, you aren't giving up on turbos are you?

As far as the fuel pump. Mine started making noise right after I put the turbo in. I think I had a weak one, because after a bit of driving it would make noise. So, I put an inline in there and have not heard a peep since. And I seem to have plenty of fuel pressure when I'm running wide open.

It went thru my mind giving up, you know, frustration makes people think wrong.
But now, im going for a better setup, so...all suggestions are welcomed.
So, you first: How hard is to put an inline pump? Can you help me on this...? You know, the wiring and stuff.
Im thinking now on the forged pistons and rods, im just not sure how reliable will this work or how much care will the car need after installing forged stuff like that.

About the $$ well....its hard, i dont have enough, but I will sell some stuff (injen intake, eibach springs, stock wheels, one of my personal computers and a laptop I dont use a lot)....
with that and the money I make on my job, will be good enough to make this happen.

I just hope the short block is ok

Did you check to see if you blew a head gasket? Check the oil for coolent. Usually a bad compression check with a forced induction car means "blown head gasket"! (if the car still runs ok) Maybe not. You might want to check that before you go looking into pistons and rods. See if there is a copper head gasket available. You can get them custom made if needed. I'm just not completly sure what is all available for the FS-DE motor. If the car is runing fine then the head gasket could just be the problem? Is it overheating?? Etc. Anyone have any ideas. I just think if it was internally you would really know! :D

Sorry for the frustration...... I know how you feel!

That's kind of what I wondered. Head gasket. Can anyone answer this better, I too would think that a piston would be a bigger deal, but I don't have any experience with that end of things to be able to identify that.

Igdrasil, I can help you out with the inline, very easy. In fact, not to steal their work, but if you go to fmprotege.com, and download their instructions they have a great set of instructions for putting in the inline!

No I didnt checked for that...but oil is fine...and al other pistons are giving good readings. The manual says:

-if the compression in adjacent cylinders stays low, the cylinder head gasket may be damaged or cylinder head distorted and overhaul is required.
Check the picture....

The protege 2.0l FS engine has a dual stage metal head gasket stock. Very dependable even at those cylinder pressures.
by the way razz the copper gasket you speak of is not a viable choice being the stock gasket can handle the same torque to yield specs needed for forced induction.

igdrasil i am emailing you info as we speak
take the motor apart and do it right for maximum boost.
CAN you say fastest car in PR soon!!!!!!!!!!;) :p

With the stock head studs and 20psi you could have easily warped the head and blown the head gasket!

Please read the above post.
I have chosen to go with stock head bolts on my beast that will be running around those pressures daily because they are torque to yield fasteners. BTW the stock fasteners are bolts NOT studs:)

20 psi daily.... good luck ;) Motec?? DFI??? Speed PRO??:D Also... did you run Ductile Iron Sleeves w/ copper o-ring??

Sorry to hear what happened.

Do not give up in turbos. They are the best upgrade you can do to an engine. Just keep in the safe zone.

Detonation kills an engine in seconds. It may be caused by two reasons:
1st Lean mixture
2nd Too much ignition advance.

Or both.

My suggestion is that before you do anything else you must fix your problem. If you want to use higher boost you must go to a stand alone fuel management system.

Just going forged will not solve the problem. Detonation will destroy the strongest pistons.

I am sure you broke a piston. If you had a blown gasket the engine should have been overheating. When you brake a piston the car feels ok but you will get the vapors out of the valve cover.

Keep going.

Turbos are great when you have the right mixture and ignition advance.

well raz i think you should take a look at my progress. this may help answer some of your questions

I will be running a tuned piggyback for fuel enrichment and remapped ignition timing .
Ductile iron sleeves?? This aint no honda with the floating deck bud!!;) and no oring . I chose not too because of the gasket material and design.
As a matter of fact the mazda block is much stronger than i even gave it credit for when i took it apart and blueprinted it for the forged internals.
I have a good idea. Come to spoolins open house in july. I and many from the jersey area will be coming down your way to meet and go to virginia. Then we can take a looksy at the setup :)

dude sorry to hear that, hopefully your block is ok. That way it wont be as expensive to build up your engine. Your news scares me. it could happen to anyone. Good Luck.

(notcool) Man that sucks! I would be so:mad:
I wish you the best of luck. Yeah I over boosted to 16psi once on the dyno and the car shut off and would not retstart......I was so scared I almost shat my pants. I have had the unfortunate exoerience in my youth to blow some motors (Miatas dont like 14psi of boost and an FMU.....yes I learned the hard way:rolleyes: )I was 19 and stupid
I am glad you are taking a positive approach and if you need any advice or info dont hesitate to email me
