I am in need of a laptop. A real good one, i am moving in January and I dont want to take my desktop beacause my Lil brother uses it for school. I really dont know much about computers. Price really doesnt matter, no more that 2k.
I want something that i can buy from a reputable company like dell, sony etc...
Alot of memory and something that is going to be running fast all the time and doesnt take forever to load a webpage.
I was looking at a Sony Vaio but i dont know which one or what kind of laptop i want. What are some really good ones out there right now that i can buy instead of building that comes with a decent warranty

I'm a laptop tech for Best Buy, and I'd say no on the SOny choice. From what I've seen Sony's cost more and suck the most. I just don't like them. The HP/Compaq brands are both alright. The Gateway's we sell are also good. My favorite really is the Toshiba's though. For under 2k you can get a really good one with a fairly large screen. Also, the Toshiba's just seem to run faster/better than the rest. None of us can explain it, it just seems to be the way it is. Sorry, I can't comment on any brands not sold by BBY, I just don't know them.

I might be parting my Vaio. It's about a year and a half old, 2.4Ghz P4, 512MB ram, CD/DVD burner, 40 gig HD

it's a pcg-660 (I think). It's got an extended warranty, some extras.

If the offer is right i might run a system restore on it and part it out.

REASON: I just bought a Powerbook. Gotta love MAC.

EDIT: I dunno what that guy is talking about. My Vaio has been one of the most reliable computer's I've had. We have a Vaio desktop as well. No problems out of either.

powerbooks are nice, so are pentium-M based systems (centrino included)

look for a nice screen, quality keyboard, and good battery life in a pentium M equipped computer. I was very happy with my HP compaq nc6000

Powerbooks are top of the line. You cant directly compare their specs to those of windows. Powerbooks double the speed of a windows machine. The 15 inch powerbook is less than 5 pounds. I'm at one of the top information security schools in the country and EVERY professor in my department uses a powerbook.

As for me. I bout a refurbished gateway 600 and it has never had a problem. Just for the discount that is available. I have to say get the Gateway or Dell Refurbished. And NO MATTER WHAT YOU GET>.. GET ACCIDENTAL PROTECTION.

I didn't get it.. and i wish like hell that i had. I dropped it 1 time in a completely freak accident, and I've had a line going across the bottom of my screen for a year and it drives me nuts.

Laptops are the enemy! :)
HPQ makes some nice ones. I just bought some 3.2 gig, 800 FSB, 1 gig RAM, 128Meg 5700 togo, 80gig HD, DVD burner, 17'' widescreen machines for some engineers and man they will be so sweet. I only wish it was the 6800 to go :(

I got them for 2778.00$ with the 3 yr next day on site warranty and the accindental damage coverage with spare batteries and the roller case. Also got the docks to go with them.
These babies are HEAVY!
We buy straight from an internal rep.

can powerbooks be converted to linux? if so i'd venture to get one, if not then just maybe. the only bad thing about powerbooks is they're kinda expensive

Yeah, the powerbook is pretty expensive, but gotta love student discounts. 200 off retail isn't bad for just being a student.

hmm. .. i have an averatec 3280hx. . . 900 after rebate and its nice and small (thin and light category laptop) which is nice since im always on the go (carrying crap at the university)
bought a 2 year extended warrantee which included the battery and everytying is golden

I've been using my Sony Vaio laptop for 2 years constantly and have had no problems. I had more problems with the IBM Think Pad at work than with my Sony.

Just my $.03

i have a dell inspiron 300m. i feel that it has held up fairly well considering i take it with me alot.

as for tech support ... you might as well go in your backyard, grab a piece of poo and ask it a question because that's about what you get with the basic consumer plan. the business support plan is quite teh opposite - extremely fast and effective.

if you can get a good deal - which should be easy considering dell is always doing some kind of special - go for it.

drew.
