The 8610 and 8611 series inserts look like possible fits for the Tokico HP strut bodies. I need to determine the correct stroke length for a lowered Protege though. The OEM strut mounts will have to be bored to .625" to accept the Koni shaft. The strut body will have to be trimmed down to fit the insert aswell.

Here are the possible inserts for the front:

8610-1436RACE & 8611-1257RACE
Stroke: 5.63"
MaxOverall Length: 19.69"
Min L: 14.06
Insert Body Length: 11.42"
OD: 1.71"

The rear struts may fit the longer 13" insert because I believe the strut tubes are a tad longer than the front tubes.

If anyone wants to donate blown/old parts, these would be very helpful!!
-Rear Tokico HP/MSP/MP3 strut
-Front and rear OEM P5/Sedan struts

Measured the stroke length today of my struts and confirmed the Konis will work on most lowered Proteges. I have a track day July 15-16th where I hope to be able to test&tune the Konis, it will be a stretch though. Install should be fairly easy, with just a little custom work. I'm opting for the single adjustable inserts.

Front Insert PN:
8610-1436 RACE

Rear Insert PN:
8610-1437 RACE

These will not necessarily work on YOUR Protege due to stroke length of the dampers. If you plan on doing this, feel free to contact me and I will help you through the process.

just curious...why are you going w/ the singles instead of the doubles?

how are you retaining the inserts in the tubes?

The singles are less money and easier to tune. The insert is going to fit snuggly into the strut tube, with just a few thousandths of room. Most likely I'll drill the tube and put retaining screws to hold it in place at the top, and at the bottom a single bolt keeps it on the base.

the ones we had on the cav had like a ridge on the strut that u have to bascially rubber mallot it into the housing and then u had to drill the hole in the bottom of the strut so u can put the bolt in (obviously u had to drill hole before u put insert in)

Yea, I was thinking about machining a little spacer to press in between the strut and insert if necessary. Thanks

no prob, ive done like 7 cars worth of those. pipe cutter works great on strut housings too. im interested in seeing u finish these.

well i blew one of my rear struts two weeks ago, can it be rebuilt for a very low car?? shorten the tube?? i had the tokico blues on my car and they where sitting on the bump stops and the car was at least 1/2 higher than it is now, i had to go back to the stock p5 strut because it was about 3/4 shorter in the tube.. I need a short tube or just to change the insides so that it doesnt destory itself at the end of the shocks stroke..
the pic is last year, when the car rasied all the way up in the rear, and tokicos will not work with what you see..

I just got my AWR coilovers in today with the Koni single adjustable inserts. I'll have pictures up later of the install.

xelderx- Tony was able to make camber plates for the 8610's right?

WRCprotege- I've attached the Koni Motorsports catalog. Look over the 8610/8611 series inserts and measure your strut lengths. From your picture, the inserts should give enough travel.

EDIT: file is too big to attach, google the pdf...

Turfburn quoted me $135 each.

xelderx- thats good news, cause I was worried they'd have to be custom parts($$)!

good info...thanks. how much were the inserts?

Hold that thought...I'll get back to you on that. The AWR setup has a few little glitches that I'll be talking to Tony about later today. I got everything installed and mostly adjusted. It looks like I'm going to have to do a little grinding on the rear camber plates to give them enough clearence to be effective. Right now I actually have positive camber in the rear.

Thats what I was telling you before. I ended up grinding the upper spindle hole and now have up to three degrees negative. The most I could get with the AWR set up was +0.5

I told Tony about it this morning and also what I did to make it better. He might redesign them a little, but even modified you can still only get about -1 degree before you have to worry about the spring hitting the tower or not being able to get a socket on the top nut.
