Killed an eclipse, but ouch!

Well, just thought id say I raced a new eclipse gts and won tonight. But I have to say, shifting to first on accident at 60 mph really hurts. I've never felt a car shake that bad before in my life, granted the only other car that happened to me in was a 96 gs eclipse.

Anything anyone suggest I look at to make sure everything is ok?

I don't see how you could have gotten into 1st gear at 60mph...There is a gate..in the tranny which prevents ya from getting it in there!

Chas

yeah, it scared me at first until I realized that I had missed the shift. Just one of those things where I was'nt paying attention, and I let them get the jump so i was in a hurry (freak)

Every thing should be ok, if it still sounds like its running the same and you hear no strange noise coming from your engine. The clutch and pressure plate might not like you that much, but it shouldnt have hurt it that bad. The only thing that was bad is im sure it bounced off the 7500 mark a few times...

Better delete this thread before you take it in for your warranty service! (lol)

If you shifted into first at 60 mph, and let off the clutch completely, your engine would be toast.

The engine would be forced to rev to something along the lines of 9000-10000 RPM. The rev limiter would not help any, because the transmission would force the revs up higher.

I'm assuming you started to let the clutch out, saw the revs jump up WAY too fast, and jammed the clutch back in, right?

uh, yea shift into first at 60, another wonderful msp thread of course in the wrong section to boot

it's possible to shift into first. you just have to "break" the gate blocking you. my cousin did it in his integra GSR all the time. looking at his speed and using proper rev matching, he was able to get it into first fairly easily. it was great to see him pull 180s in empty parking lots using this.... gotta love Honduh engineering...

I hate anything to do with Honda. Oh, they make decent lawnmowers.

(lol) Your on a roll today!

I dont know what it is man. Maybe its because I work around these cars so much everyday, that I feel like they're my kids man. When people come on and talk about 'Well I did this and it broke .... ' or 'Well, I think I broke it' I'm just like 'Damn!'. To me, the car is a beautiful creation, and I just shudder at the thought of someone miss treating them. Like this instance. If you can't drive, don't race. Its not to hard to get the car in gear, its a pretty close ratio. These cars should be treated well and pampered during the week and autoXed on the weekends, not dragged out on the street so you can break it. I just think its horrible.

I agree. At the rate of destruction we're seeing on the board, the cynicism from some about the "limited" quantity will soon be a moot point. :)

Well, the drive in to work today everything seemed ok. No funny noises that I heard, so I think its cool. I rarely ever race the MSP, but I was'nt about to let a eclipse beat me.

BTW, the clutch was all the way out, but only for about a second. The whole car shook like hell. I was afraid I broke an axle, but after today, i think it made it out alive.

I guess I will pay more attention next time.

About the car not allowing me to shift into first. You can break any cars gate, about 1 year ago there were 3 kids driving down 275 in a mustang at about 120 mph, they tried to downshift to 4th, but hitting 2nd instead, causing them to slide into oncomming traffic, killing all three of them.

You've got to remember that they are CARS! I take mine to the track and beat the s*** out of it. As long as you give the car propper maintenence it will be fine. (Shooting by the rev limter is never a good idea though) Obviously the harder you beat on your car the more often you have to do the routine stuff. A car is a car is a car! Limited production or not...a scratch here scrape there doesn't make a difference.

I am begining to think the majority of the MSP owners are a little to sensitive about their cars.

The MSP is no different from any other F/I car (maybe just a little slower). A standard 2.0 liter with a t2-small doesn't make it that special. Just enjoy it for what it is....a car.;)

I doubt it went into 1st gear at 60 mph. Did you let out the clutch when you did or you just shifted into it. You said it vibrated badly so that's tellign me you actually let of the clutch. Your car won't 'vibrate' badly if the rpms are high, it WILL vibrate when the load is too much for the engine. You can all do the test, just go for a drive and instead of putting it in 3rd at a low RPM just put it in 5th, it will vibrate. I think you jus hit 5th on accident cause if you put it in 1st gear and let off the clutch the RPM's would raise so fast your reaction time wouldn't be fast enough before your engine blew up at 14k RPM's. Just my take...

EDIT: Although I didn't read into everyones post I read that you did let out the clutch. Sorry.
