Jeff's MSP GTR Build

new tie rods went in last night which means I can now safely drive unsafely which is good. I also rebuilt the undercarriage(crossmember) again to make it lighter.

If anyone here is a megasquirt guru please let me know cause cold start has been pwning me for quite some time now. Quite hard to get it right and you really only get one chance to get it to start on the first turn after an overnight cool down. Then you have to wait til the next day to try out new settings lol its been anywhere from -15 to -0 the past few weeks and I am having fun finding the "sweetspot" between flood and not enough fuel. Of course the ITBs dont make it any easier, but when the temp is right outside it will start on the first crank. Other nights Im cranking it tons just to get it to start like some old sh*tbox.

Check with Cougarduex (I think thats how you spell it) Anyways hes got some experience with the Megasquirt.

There is also a megasquirt thread in the engine management section.

well i made a thread in the EMS section but nobody replied. My last post pretty much sums up the issue I was having:

well after another night of strange behavior I finally started thinking outside the box.

I pulled all 4 plugs and unhooked the ignition coil.

I got a small but bright flashlight and fired up the MS. I started turning over the engine and looked into each cylinder through the spark plug hole.

Its hard to see but if you turn over the engine enough times fuel from the injectors will start to become visible mist in the cylinders.

After watching a few times I noticed that the number 2 cylinder had hardly any fuel mist in the combustion chamber.

I pulled the injectors and put the suspected injector in the number 1 cylinder and repeated the test.

This verified the 1 injector was still spraying much less than the other 3.

Verdict: flaky injector.

I then pulled the 460cc injectors again and replaced with the weaksauce stock 230cc injectors. Reloaded the stock base map that has a rough 230cc calibration for an entirely stock motor(no itbs, full emissions, idle valve, VAF etc.)

Fired it up, started right away. Once the active start enrichment timed out the motor started chugging so I am clearly going to have to remap everything all over again for the 230cc.

Moral of the story, sometimes using cheap used parts found in online forum for sale threads is a false economy.

so...Anyone got a single rx7 460cc injector for sale ? ;)

well Ive spent many nights now reading and reading and reading and reading.

I am now the master of cold starting a MS engine.

I am learning a hell of alot about tuning with the MS and having good success.

I am very great full I tried this out on the bp05 and not the GTR. Ive made a couple bone head moves that would have upset me if the GTR was in the car. Thank fully nothing was damaged etc.

Car starts first try in any temp I have tried now.

I think I should probably do a write up when I have some time for anyone else trying to MS a bp.

Anyways, still looking for a big turbo for the GTR and a few other misc. things. n/a tuning is keeping me occupied for the time being.

and if you are ever wondering what a n/a bp with a 3" catless exhaust sounds like...well lets just say it makes alot of noise but doesnt really go anywhere lol a vid will be up soon once I finish tuning with wb02.

gettin there..

MS tunerStudio has some pretty badass dashboards you can customize the design of. Here are some examples.

then n/a build is pretty much done. All thats left is to put in a new battery and clean up some stuff so it looks better (need to remove the A/C line, do a little modding to my vacuum resovoir bracket so that it isnt on a weird angle and change some ugly red grounding wires to black or blue. )

My birthday is in April so I would like to have the T25 on by then to do some testing on the bp05. Still breaking in the clutch right now.

I am also waiting to hear back from a buddy who has a decent condition GT2876R which he is saying he will give me a good deal on. This should be more than enough for the GTR motor I am thinking so if I can get a good deal I am gonna jump on it. It is internally gated though, so we will have to see how well it works with high boost.

Definitely an awesome build. I was just saying the other day how I wish the protege had bp motors in them. Then I came on here and saw this. Amazing

a 2876R is stupid overkill for a 1.8L, and werent those t3 inlet only?
edit: fixed.
edit 2: and what psi were you planning to run? hope its in the 20 area, the 2876R is good up to almost 30 on your setup. 16 and lower its massively oversized, even factoring the retarded VE you're looking at.

for the bp05 I could see your point as it tends not to last long past 300whp from what ive read but for the gtr I dont really see any point in running low boost. keep in mind therieldeal is making over 300whp with his stock GTR turbo and stock gtr head and he hits the track more than anyone I have talked to so it sure isnt a garage queen. Been quite a long time and his engine is still holding together like a champ. I am hoping to do better with the larger turbo and mk2 vvt head. The only thing left to find will be a set of really really big of injectors. Not sure what the highest output a GTR bottom can take, but my guess is in the 350-400whp range from what I have seen other people put down with stock n/a BP rods and from what guys on clubprotege are running.

So to me the 2876R doesnt seem like overkill considering 400WHP = ~460 flywheel which is pretty much near the max of the 2876r from my understanding of the turbo.

What would you say is a better fit for 350-400whp?

2876r sounds good to me.

I like to match up turbos so that i don't have to spin the crap out of it to make power. By that I mean I like to have my turbo sized so that I reach my power goals at about 80% of the turbos capacity. That being said I think you should be good with the 2876r.
