Jeff's MSP GTR Build

looks like the test engine. i think the gtr motor had the red valve cover on it :D

ya this is the test engine.

gtr has vvt miata head with silver valve cover and blue writing. you can tell its vvt from other heads from the big whole on the top left of valve cover. see page 1.

this test motor should still be fun though. 9:1 + 16psi on the T25 should keep the driver smiling at least providing the rx7 injectors can keep up.

I have never tried any swap like this before and since the toyota/gtr setup will have all the same problems (mounts, crossmember, wiring etc.) this was like riding with training wheels first before risking the good motor/trans to stupidity.

so for now the little saab turbo is gonna spin like she never spun before until the bp05 says no more. then in with the GTR/toyota drivetrain and yeeeeeeeeeehaw. oddly enough I spent more on drill bits and saw blades over the last few weeks than the turbo costed me.

just wish I had more time to play with my car. work pwns me like 50 hours a week + traveling and when I get home I am so tired I can barely even complain about stuff lol

got the P5 rad installed last night. I cant believe how much room there is. The P5 rad is not thick at all, its just a dinky little thing. The MSP rad seemed much thicker from what I remember. I could have used a stock rad fan after all. oh well guess I will just have lots of room to play with.

filling the rad up and starting car soon (jerkit)

edwin wrote a post about how the MSP radiator is better than the P5 radiator, but if you really want bang for your buck, a full width off a RF is full width, and about the same thickness as the MSP.

The RF is not full width, it has a SMIC. Sam as the MSP rad.

trying to figure out why one of my injectors is leaking air both - and + pressure even with new o-rings and grommits. other 3 are fine and everything is torque to spec..hoping my fuel rail didnt somehow get bent out of shape.

I just did away with the rail spacers and torqued them evenly until the injectors didn't twist anymore.

I have two spare fuel rails if you need one :)

ya I might try that, or try some other slimmer rail spacer, maybe mine are out of shape. Keep in mind this is a bp05 rail that bolts directly to head, not to IM but same thing. The 1 injector is so loose I can spin it easily with 2 fingers, the others are torque down good which made me think maybe the rail is off par by a minimal amount. I will play around with it tonight and see what comes from it.

I am using a shop vac that can blow/suck to do the testing. Under vac there is practically no noticeable leak which makes me wonder if it has always been out of wack as it is from a vehicle with 250,000kms that has had the rail on/off who knows how many times and maybe was incorrectly installed before which bent the rail slighly, but since the car never saw boost it was never even noticed. As soon as I switch the shop vac to blow it is so obviously leaking that I could dry my laundry hanging from the strut bar.

well got everything installed properly, injectors are in very tight now. I am at the airport leaving to montreal from toronto right now. i put insurance back on the car so I will try to take a few vids when I get back. lots of stupid problems. starter somehow died. also need new tie rod ends as the ones I have got stripped and mangled from being taken on/off so many times over the years and both my balljoints boots are torn so I wanna get this stuff taken care of asap so I can start having some real fun.

pretty impressive! what kind of numbers are you hoping for?? also what throttle bodies are you using?

the throttle bodies are suzuki gsxr 750cc throttle bodies. I chose them because they are easily separated and spaced for the 1.8bp.
mx3forever of clubprotege was the inspiration but he eventually gave up on his and sold them.

For the whp I am planning i dont know what to say. I am hoping for at least 240+whp with the T25 on the test engine since it has 9:1 compression. Some miata guys have put down ~220whp running 12psi on the same saab .48 T25, but they have a higher drivetrain loss from the RWD trans, no tubular manifold, no ITBs and no 94 octane gas. I also hope to be boosting at 16psi instead of the 12psi they ran as I am in freezing cold canada and not in hot texas. So who knows what will happen but it should be interesting to say the least.

The GTR bottom / MK2 top I dont know what to think. The realdieal is putting down well over 300WHP with his GTR motor with stock gtr head, which flows worse than the n/a bp head, and nowhere near the mk2 head.

So if I size the turbo large enough over 300whp but until I am ready with a LSD in the toyota trans I dont want to swap the GTR in. As there is lots of snow on the ground here I dont think GTR will happen this year, probably get swapped during april 2011 when i take a week off for my birthday.

Pretty sure therieldeal (guy who makes the toyota trans adaptor plate) is running11.87 @ 117.6 mph in his GTR escort right now, but he is a bit lighter than my MSP so i am not sure how I will do at the track for 2011.

pretty sure his is still running the GTR vj-23 and stock gtr head. So with a larger turbo, larger injectors and a better head (mk2 vvt) I would hope I could at least get in the 12s with my heavy MSP.
