Jeff's MSP GTR Build

well last night at about 3am I heard and felt what can only be described as death in mechanical form.
unbelievable havoc unleashed. grease all over everything. axle broke at cv joint around 5000rpm. as you can imagine everything took a beating. .
managed to push it all the way home by myself. was so tired when I got to the house I could not even push it up the driveway,
luckily the axle died after a long day of driving and I was almost at my house. would have been death if it was on the highway or doing some fancy driving. perfectly fine then suddenly bam bam bam louder and harder than anything I have ever heard or felt in a car before. worse car sound ever. until I popped the hood I was sure I must have hit a curb or a missing manhole cover or something in the middle of the road so I took a walk following the trail of grease and pieces and couldnt find anything. still have no idea how this could have happened. any time ive had to change an axle in my experience it start getting noisy before hand. this was not the case driving perfect smooth, one hand on the wheel, no power steering, relatively straight road cruising home on a back road after a long day and then just BAM BAM BAM so hard and loud and almost s*** my pants. recover control and oh s*** coffee goes everywhere and i put it into neutral pull over to find death in axle form.

weirdest thing to experience.

mental note, dont beat on axles with 250,000kms on them.

car is parked until I get some brand new axles.

ya i know im lucky it wasnt something terrible. just one hell of a wake up call at 3am when the last thing on your mind is the car breaking at light throttle in 3rd gear lol now im just trying to figure out if i can get escort gt axles with abs ring to work with the msp abs sensor. cant seem to find a measurement of the abs ring or how many teeth it has. the axles I had in were from a non abs car so i have been living without it but figure i might as well try and make it work if i can.

popped the car up on jackstand and checked out the transmission. I can drive smoothly through all gears up on the stands.

strange that after all this driving I have done I never heard the slightest sound until this. oh well time for new axles.

well i dont know wtf is broken but the car aint going anywhere.

I just put in NEW axles, filled trans back up. Put it into gear. Start to let out clutch and BAM BAM BAM and the car doesnt move

When I jack it up on the stand and start the engine, in neutral, one wheel spins one way the other wheel spins the other way. great.

While its in the air, I can shift gears fine, give it a bit of gas and it accelerates the wheels, shift 1-2-3-4-5-R all fine.

put it back on the ground, let out clutch BAM BAM BAM

checked the new axles and the arent hitting anything.

hmmm

time to start taking everything apart.

Yea, I could see myself falling off the jackstands and burning rubber right into the kitchen.

if the car could drive i wouldnt have a problem lol.

everything ive read points towards the cv's being broken or the axles not all the way in. both of which i have removed from the equation. I think i am gonna have to pull out trans and check of the clutch/flywheel cause thats all thats left cant think of anything else to check externally and the axles are lining up the same way that has worked fine earlier so I am scratching my head here.

yes but every now and then i have a buddy drop if i need a extra hand holding something etc. once you have a chain system for lifting the engine/trans there really is no need for a helper.
im sure guys who work at mazda dealerships could do it in their sleep.

just pulled the axles again, made sure the new retaining clips were still good. the axles a perfectly snug and take a few light taps with a rubber mallet to seat into the trans like they should so i am still thinking I have to pull off the trans later tonight or tomorrow and check out the clutch as thats the only thing i can think to check now. i used locktight on everything so I am gonna be surprised if something came loose.

chicken and the egg what came first the broken axles or the broken something

if the trans is broken then I think I am going to stop wasting time and put in e153 trans. the new EGT axles costed 1/3 as much as the entire EGT bp05 drivetrain swap did lol i guess i can just resell them though when i am done with this trans setup

well it seems to be the driver side axle input spline is messed inside the transmission. the clutch seems to work fine, but when I let it out Im just getting terrible noise from the drivers side axle input area. cant really see well inside the axle hole but im pretty sure thats what is causing my grief.

question now is should I go buy a kia sephia trans for $200, put in my stock MSP axles, regain ABS and keep the bp05 test going or,, take a sledgehammer to my frame rail and make some room for the e153 sooner than later.

decisions decisions decisions

its finally a nice day out and I cant drive my car lol

epic fail

well I have decided I dont want to put in the E153 without an LSD and thats out of my budget right now. Really it should be going in when I make the move from BP05 to GTR IMO. For now I just want to get the car running for this weekend so I can make a trip to the beach and get some tail this weekend.

I just got a good offer on a kia trans that I could swap in the next couple days and then get back to boosting the BP05 with the 460cc injectors and saab T25. I have been told my MSP 28 spine axles fit right into the KIA trans perfect, but the question is...will my MSP intermediate shaft still line up using the kia trans/bp engine? or will the flange for the 3 bolts be off by a bit since its going onto a BP block and not a FS (I know if that was the case I could theoretically make an adaptor plate but that sounds like a chore).

does anyone know offhand if the intermediate shaft location/pattern is the same between the FS and the BP? Im guessing not but would love to be pleasantly surprised.

well according to fe3-323 I can use the kia intermediate shaft with the MSP pass side axle. Then just the MSP drivers side and voila ABS and speedo are restored and I get a somewhat marginally stronger trans.

so off to the junkyard then.

its been 1 hour and 15 minutes..

but I am going to be pulling trans tomorrow. then I am bringing the trans to a guy named Silex from feoa/clubprotege. He is going to rebuild the trans with parts from his spares, reuse the 1 day old axles and put the trans into his boosted escort wagon. should be good for 13s. I am still doing the KIA trans for the BP05 with the MSP axles so I get my ABS/Speedo back and a stronger trans. Should take a few nights to get everything done.

Silex is finishing up a properly welded version of my ITB manifold for me over the next few days and I should have it back from him by the time the KIA trans is in the car.

Then I just need to put in my oil drain and reinstall my FMIC (so easy I just pull the rad forward a bit and I have the front cut up enough that I can easily just slide it in with some couplings and mount without pulling off any bodywork).

So things should be good again soon now that I have a plan in motion.

Love it.

When you put in the GTR would you be interested in doing a how to? Or a definitive parts list?
