Kooldino said:Here's the flaw I see. If I see say...a rug...from taiwan, and another one from Japan...they are BOTH Oriental rugs. The term "Oriental" may not be PC for whatever reason, but there's no mistaking it's meaning.
On the other hand, calling a rug made in France a "Jewish rug" is totally incorrect.

if you have even half pay attention to your history classes, Japanese were called "japs" in WWII and shortly after... they got pissed when they were called that because they didn't want to relate themselves with the Empire of Japan... that's just a watered down version
oh and I suppose you don't care if you piss off the Jewish either huh? Japanese = Jewish American Princess
you can take your opinion about political correctness and stfu.. there's tons of people with many different backgrounds here on the board... we don't need to be stepping on each other's toes

Ah see, here's where we have a difference of perspective. You're using the word "Oriental" as an ethonym, especially when describing inanimate objects. You have no problems from me there.
However, its the instances where "Oriental" is used as a label for a group of people, that's objectable.

HOw is oreintal objectionable it labels an area of the word, THE ORIENT not an object.
Asian obviously would include russia, India and a handful of other LARGE land masses not involved in the description so poeple called it the orient and everyone gets all pissy. ITS A BETTER DESCRIPTIVE TERM THEN ASIAN FOR AN AREA OF THE WORLD!

Your right, oriental is not an ethnicity, Chinese, Japanese, thoughs are ethnicities. Oriental is a more narrowed geographical description. Whether it was used to describe rice rugs or people its a simple geographical term.

It's just asking for flame. What if I said KKK because I was too lazy to type Caucasian? I don't want to sound negative, but I have had my share of racist acts shown to me at my expense. In fact, one of my used to be close friends thought it would be funny to carve the word gook on my door frame when his cousin was with him (I guess he just wanted to be funny and show off). I was pissed. IMO don't use any words that your gut tells you may be misconstrued.
On to topic now, my dad went to Japan and told me some people spend more on there cars than there house and stuff. He saw cars with chandeliers and fish tanks inside. Crazy. I wonder how much those dump trucks cost to do that? Peace.
It does seem a bit more specific. It's reasons like this that I don't understand why people take offense when called Oriental.

the word ORIENTAL should only be used for RUGS and FOOD, not for people. Asian is the politically correct term. I take offence when somebody calls me Oriental..... in my mind, i'm thinking "what an ignorant SOB!"
I highly take offence to this. Kinda shows what kind of ignorance that still exsits today.

maybe it's because people take pride in their ethnicity/nationality, and would rather not be grouped with other groups??

And thats the problem. People in America don't know the difference between Japanese, Asian, or most other cultures for that matter. So they don't usually mean to harm when they use terms like "Japanese" or "Oriental" they are just ignorant to the differences. And socitey has gotten out of control with the PC stuff...unless someone is using a remark for the intent to proke or insult you (really trying to insult) then let it go. I'm orignally from West Virginia and do you think I haven't heard every redneck, inbreed, no shoe wearin', sheep lovin' name on the planet? But do I really care about someone's ignorant slang term? Sticks and stones may break my bones....but names will never hurt me...
