just wondering, not too into car audio, but i thought it would be really cool if anyone would be able to fabricate an ipad into the double din hole for the deck... it would be the best "deck" in my opinion, or at least really unique. any ideas?

I think the iPad is just a waste of money. I am happy with my Pioneer touchscreen and usb hookup so I can use a flash drive or iPod. If you want something with a few more features I would suggest a carputer. They seem pretty neat.

ditto.. the Ipad is nothing revolutionary. Cellular wireless connections have been available on laptops for a decade or more. Not mentioning you can actually do more with a net book.

the ipad (or "maxipod") is total garbage. its a huge iphone... with all the setbacks (and then some: no camera) but no new benefits. do yourself a favor and save yourself hundreds of dollars and buy a used ipod touch 1G.

oh, all good points. i am just a big fan of the apple systems, thought it might be cool. ill probably just get a kenwood touchscreen, but ill look into that carputer thing.

it would probably be more expensive to do a carputer, but it would be much better suited to your needs. sleepyMSP did one, i think, the thread gets bumped every other month or so.

Yea I would just shop around for a good touchscreen with iPod support built in. You will probably have to buy the iPod cable separately, but mine is easy to navigate and pretty fast in terms of scrolling and loading songs.

With mini and nano itx integrated mainboards fairly well avaliable and cheap as dirt components for them it's not even close. The biggest expense by far will be te software you want to run on it.

Don't forget about the SSD. I keep reading about them wondering if I should buy one to use as a boot drive for my desktop, but I hear they don't have a very good life expectancy at this point in time.

No offense, but all you iPad naysayers really need to wise up and open your minds. The iPod was never the best of breed. Far from it. There were countless devices that offered more... but they all faded into oblivion while Apple sold millions. The same can be said for the iPhone. These devices were never designed to appeal to the techno-geek that's gonna spend hours modifying it. Sure, with a simple jailbreak, you can go to town on the iPhone but those people (I'm one of them) represent a small %. The #1 appeal Apple devices have (and this includes the iPad) is ease of use, reliability and simplicity. Because of the pricepoint and screensize, netbooks will be the only true competitor to the iPad. On paper, netbooks appear to be far superior. For many, they'll still be the better choice. I still see the iPad selling as well as... well, any recent apple product though. Think about the 'average' computer user. What are they doing? They're not playing (insert whatever the F game the kids are wasting their lives playing for hours on end these days). They're also not using their computers to photochop their sister's friends face onto a penthouse pet. (though, they should be) No... they're not doing anything (that involves ridiculously expensive hardware/software or crazy level of expertise about computers). They're playing simple games like bejeweled or solitaire.... they're checking their email... reading news... etc Admittedly, typing anything more than a username and password is going to be a chore. A tirade like this would be ridiculous so that won't be happening... unless of course you've got the keyboard accessory. Like the iPhone, this thing will be jailbroken in know time. Unlike the iPhone (3G anyway) with its pitiful amount of RAM, this thing should be able to handle multitasking quite nicely. I personally can't wait to see what's available on Cydia and Rock for this badboy. But even that will pale in comparison to what the developers come out with for apps. Say what you want about Apple, but nobody can deny they have the BEST capacity touch screens/interfaces around. This, along with the bigger screen, will really free up the limitations the iPhone/touch had for developers. It'll only be limited by one's imagination really. Needless to say, with all the 'art' apps that'll come out, this will be a huge hit with kids. I think everyone just needs to open their mind on this. I've been using a windows based tablet (for work) for the past 4 years. The resistive technology coupled with MS's lack of any kind of innovation = an almost useless tablet experience. You can't just port over an existing OS and think it'll translate. Fortunately Apple understands this. (jailbroken) iPad FTW

So are you hating on the iPod or rejoicing about it? You hit the nail on the head about simplicity. That is why I am suggesting the OP uses an iPod. The iPad is nothing but an iPod with a huge screen. Sure it looks pretty cool, but if you want a cool headunit for your car, get a carputer for the most functionality, or else a Pioneer / Kenwood / Alpine etc for a good quality touchscreen. If you want a portable computer, netbooks are definitely more practical.

chico - i can find countless flaws in your argument.
1.) lets start with the obvious. the ipad doesnt do multitasking. you cant listen to pandora and play bejeweled at the same time. so it wont replace a laptop. it doesnt have a real keyboard either, which doesnt help, and if it does, its going to be on the docking port and would probably be upward of 80 dollars. then its LESS portable than a laptop since you have to carry both. so it wont replace a laptop.
2.) its an oversized iphone with no camera and no phone, and its twice the price and more than twice size. doesnt that sound stupid? and did i mention its not a phone? so it doesnt replace your phone.
3.) the "average computer user" has a phone and a laptop. in fact look at the people who use ipods and macs. they already have both. why would they need an ipad? you cant leave either of your other devices at home.
4.) its expensive. you can get a netbook with a service contract, hell, and skype, for free. thats smaller, with a keyboard, multitasks, and makes phone calls for $0.00 after contract.
5.) sure its a book reader, but then again, i dont know if you can listen to music while you read. and remember back when ipods were all the rage? people were getting held up at gunpoint because they had white earbuds. if its targeted to the mac "liberal urban demographic" user, who in their right mind would walk around with a $500+ device to read a newspaper? are you freaking crazy?

the only thing the ipad is good for is collaborating on one screen. so yes, itll be a hit in preschools if it gets good app support, and maybe in design studios. but wait, they already have devices for that. guess preschool it is.
and by the way, i run a JB ipod touch 1G. i love it. but given the choice between an itouch and an ipad for free, id still take the itouch.

this thing should be able to handle multitasking quite nicely.

Apple has no plans to allow for native multitasking with the first generation iPad.

This, along with the bigger screen, will really free up the limitations the iPhone/touch had for developers.

unless there are a ton of native apps for the iPad, all its going to do is scale existing iPhone apps. developers will be hard pressed without an installed consumer base to develop apps for the iPad first rather than iPhone apps which are guaranteed sellers.

(jailbroken) iPad FTW

yeah. this is the only thing which will redeem it.

look, there are a ton of Apple fanboys out there and thats a given fact. Apple sells product based on slick marketing and the cool factor more than they do actual features and of course, price. i say this and I own a non-jailbroken iPhone and I love it. could not do business without it. but there is no way I'd need an iPad having a iPhone. the lack of a camera and an SD card slot or USB port is inexcusable. people talk about the increased "real estate" and the new processor smoking Intel's Atom, but they don't include any ability for any of that to see real use. One final word; Flash. Don't tell me HTML5 is going to supplant that any time soon, its not. Youtube only does it for selected videos and Flash has more widespread support than Apple will ever admit.

all that said, its going to sell because its going to be on billboards, buses, coffee house walls, TV, email spam inboxes and magazines blitzing us with sleek white advertising. Steve Jobs knows how to make money.

I'm buying this for the car;

http://www.myviliv.com/eng/product/x70ex.asp

it's faster, as cheap or cheaper has more storage capacity, built in GPS, a window mount for the car, HD media playback, a bevy of inputs and outputs, camera and microphone, built in 3G. and the reviews have been stellar. i can load up tuning software and tune my car from it thanks to the fact that it is a real computer with a USB port. i can carry it with me thanks to the iPad sized size of the device, it comes with a car charger out of the box, i can watch media in the 16:9 format.

i'm not trying to tell anyone not to buy an iPad for the home, but for the car this is going to be a no brainer between the two. Plus it will do a fine job in the home as well :)

i still strongly believe it wont sell and will be a disaster. so does everyone else.
my girlfriend has one of the first white apple laptops, and a first gen iphone. after seeing the ipad - "i'd rather have a kindle."
the market feels the same way: apple is down 4% more than the DOW since the announcement. thats pretty bad.

its junk and everyone knows it. they have to have something up their sleeve or the project is going to get scrapped in 2 years. apple has a history of this.

It's still to early to tell. I for one won't be buying it. I have a 3Gs and mbpro. Apple comps are outstanding. But this ipad hype is too much. I think it would still be cool though to have it mounted in a car. I'm sure it will be done.

Every company has a bad idea sometimes. Overall I think Apple is a very good company in terms of quality products and nifty ideas, but this is not one of them. That computer that Ken linked looks SWEET.

not even considering that most people are so scared into buying anything they don't actually need these days. The Ipad has 0 function to anyone with a phone and laptop.

i have to say i'm stoked about it. ironically, i wasn't even considering it until i saw the iPad, so in a sense I have Apple to thank/blame for pointing me in that direction. i was also looking at the Archos 9 but there are a litany of issues with it.

LOL I've been on a shopping binge for the past 6 months or so. I never go to malls and such, but I am a fiend for buying car parts and techie gadgets online.
