ipad deck...

LOL I've been on a shopping binge for the past 6 months or so. I never go to malls and such, but I am a fiend for buying car parts and techie gadgets online.

which is why I said most, and not all people. Middle class folk with a job are still buying stuff. Its the lower income people that are on a spending binge at the moment, and they make up most of the population

chico - i can find countless flaws in your argument.
1.) lets start with the obvious. the ipad doesnt do multitasking. you cant listen to pandora and play bejeweled at the same time. so it wont replace a laptop. it doesnt have a real keyboard either, which doesnt help, and if it does, its going to be on the docking port and would probably be upward of 80 dollars. then its LESS portable than a laptop since you have to carry both. so it wont replace a laptop.

You sure you read my post? lol I know it doesn't multitask. I was referring to a jailbroken iPad! (didn't I make that clear?) As for the lack of a keyboard... wow. I KNOW I mentioned that. yeah, it's a potential knock but, as I stated above, MOST people don't really USE their keyboards all that much anyway. Sure, they'll put in a password or put in a few searches but actually typing like I am now? Please!! They do enough of that at work! The average person just wants to surf the net, read emails and play games with their 1-2 hours worth of personal time. All this can easily be done without a keyboard. If they want want do what I'm doing now or type up an email or... whatever... they can fumble around on the touchscreen keyboard (which may not be as bad as we all think) or just dock it and type away.

2.) its an oversized iphone with no camera and no phone, and its twice the price and more than twice size. doesnt that sound stupid? and did i mention its not a phone? so it doesnt replace your phone.

The lack of a camera is a BIG mistake on Apple's part. Videochat/phone jetsons style would be a HUGE selling point with this thing. The reason they left it out is the same reason Intel doesn't release the 10ghz chip to the masses. Apple knows a certain % of the market will buy whatever they put out there. They want to leave a few tricks up their sleeve for updates the following years and a camera (to get the attention of the people that would have waited anyway) will be one of those tricks.

As for the lack of a phone... Umm, do you really want this thing to be a phone? Wow... how stupid would THAT look? As for what it is... it's NOT an oversized iPhone without the phone and camera. It IS an oversized Ipod Touch. You know... the 'other' device apple can't keep on the shelf. So.... yeah. not really sure where you were going with that.

3.) the "average computer user" has a phone and a laptop. in fact look at the people who use ipods and macs. they already have both. why would they need an ipad? you cant leave either of your other devices at home.

Okaaay.... So I guess everyone should stop making computers then since the 'average computer user' already has a laptop. LOL come on man... I don't even know where to begin. Just because Apple isn't going to capture 100% market share (or anywhere near) doesn't mean it's a) not a good move and b) won't sell like cocaine-laced icecream Apple didn't want to cannibalize their macbook line by coming out with a true netbook competitor... so they came up with something that was different enough but would still compete in the low priced area of the market dominated by netbooks and neglected by apple. for those IN the market for a netbook... this may be a viable option. For those IN the market for an iPod touch... this will definitely be a viable option. Everyone else... they'll have their own reasons.

4.) its expensive. you can get a netbook with a service contract, hell, and skype, for free. thats smaller, with a keyboard, multitasks, and makes phone calls for $0.00 after contract.

I didn't know they're 'giving away' netbooks these days (with contracts) but I'll take your word for it. Really doesn't matter since a netbook is nothing more than a slimmed down (and powered down) laptop. So if you're into using a laptop than it might be for you. The iPad on the other hand represents a bit of a shift in the paradigm just like the iPhone did. Instead of dealing with a boring windows OS to drag your cursor around while pounding away on keys... you'll be using a slick finger friendly OS that'll make you forget you're even using a computer. As for Skype... lol yeah, that app's been available for a long ass time. As for multitasking... for the last F'ing time... a simple (and easy) jailbreak will fix that damn problem. It'll also allow you to use Skype on 3G so... there's your precious phone.

5.) sure its a book reader, but then again, i dont know if you can listen to music while you read. and remember back when ipods were all the rage? people were getting held up at gunpoint because they had white earbuds. if its targeted to the mac "liberal urban demographic" user, who in their right mind would walk around with a $500+ device to read a newspaper? are you freaking crazy?

Listen to music while you read? Umm... Not sure what relevancy that has. Doesn't matter. Yeah, it's a book reader... and a whole lot more. People are paying about that to ONLY read books (kindle anyone?) so...

the only thing the ipad is good for is collaborating on one screen. so yes, itll be a hit in preschools if it gets good app support, and maybe in design studios. but wait, they already have devices for that. guess preschool it is.
and by the way, i run a JB ipod touch 1G. i love it. but given the choice between an itouch and an ipad for free, id still take the itouch.[/QUOTE]

They already have devices for that? oh man... you're lost. As for you preferring the portability aspect of your touch over the ease of use and greater capability of the iPad... you're entitled to your opinion I'm sure lots of people would agree. I'm also sure lots of people will be more than happy to have both. iPhone/touch for when they're on the road... iPad for when they're at home.

...look, there are a ton of Apple fanboys out there and thats a given fact. Apple sells product based on slick marketing and the cool factor more than they do actual features and of course, price. i say this and I own a non-jailbroken iPhone and I love it. could not do business without it. but there is no way I'd need an iPad having a iPhone. the lack of a camera and an SD card slot or USB port is inexcusable. people talk about the increased "real estate" and the new processor smoking Intel's Atom, but they don't include any ability for any of that to see real use. One final word; Flash. Don't tell me HTML5 is going to supplant that any time soon, its not. Youtube only does it for selected videos and Flash has more widespread support than Apple will ever admit.

all that said, its going to sell because its going to be on billboards, buses, coffee house walls, TV, email spam inboxes and magazines blitzing us with sleek white advertising. Steve Jobs knows how to make money...

I used to feel the same way. I'd look at an average or even slightly above average windows computer and compare it to the Apple 'equivalent' and be like... wtf? The Apple costs 50% more and has a slower processor... less memory... less ports... etc. I didn't fully understand what the hype was about until I got an iPhone. From the aesthetics to the ease of use and intuitive UI... the freakin thing just works! Most of the people that trash the iPhone have never used it long enough to accurately understand what it can and can't do. They're simply anti-apple and sing the party line. Because of the iPhone, when it came time to upgrade my personal PC I figured... what the hell? So yeah, I spent a little more for my iMac than I would've if I went PC... but overall, I have no regrets. The difference between Mac and PC (especially with Windows 7) is no where near as vast as the difference between iPhone and virtually everything else (androids doing its best to close the gap) but it's still pretty wide. In addition to the thing being a freakin work of art... it's lightning quick and never breaks on me. I felt like a freakin VW technicial with my old Vista PC... always doing SOMETHING on the damn thing to get it working right. Not with this badboy. It's a... dare I say it? Hon... nooo.... Mazda damnit!! haha

So yeah... marketing BS aside... believe it or not, there ARE actual (legit) reasons why Apple has such a strong following.

-Using it as a phone would look about as stupid using it to take a picture.
-You can find a netbook for half the price of the iPad, so buy a decent netbook and still be under the cost of the iPad.
-netbook = small laptop and iPad = gigantic iPod touch
-I don't know anybody that uses an electronic device to read books.

I sold computers for a while at Circuit City and one day I had some dumbass come in asking about vista (it was new at the time). He wanted to compare the time it took for Vista to fully boot as opposed to the time it took his Mac to fully boot. He looked at his watch and started counting with me standing next to him. I really don't even like Vista and I am still running XP because I love it and know how to use it pretty well. But this guy was just a typical Apple fanboy and I really wanted to punch him in the face. Seriously, the time it takes the operating system to boot has so many factors other than just Microsoft's "bad technology". For example, we were testing it on a notebook, and no matter how good notebook technology has become...desktops still outperform for less money.

I'm not saying I hate Apple because I have an iPod touch and I love it...but seriously people need to let the iPad die.

if i didn't enjoy playing games, running my accounting software and running a business, liked building my own computers and not over paying - i'd probably buy a mac. ibought my wife a mac mini. for her its great. and i like it too, for what it is. seeing that a mac is unsuitable under any of those conditions i'll stay with a PC. macs are fine for - and apple markets to - people who are computer illiterate and not tech savvy. thats cool, and a fine business model. people who didn't like and understand those old MP3 players bought iPods. blackberries before the iPod are totally different than they are now that the iPhone has been as successful as it has. trust me, I own one and love it. despite having had to take it back and get it replaced six times for parts failure. still the best smart phone out there and PG would not run without it. period.

but the ipad at the end of the day though, there is not one netbook that is one year old that is not as capable, as cheap or cheaper, with more function and expandibility. thats just plain fact. and netbooks, as much as people want to hate them, are the fastest growing segment in PC sales right now. the iPad will sell on the strength of marketing and hype, not on actual capability. and track record indicates that first round buyers are going to get the proverbial shaft on the device when round two hits at a lower price with more features six months into it. i'd use the term "Sheep" but that'd be a tad harsh. and honestly, one should never have to jailbreak a consumer product to make it worth a $500 purchase. and most people won't.

as a business owner i have nothing but respect for Apple. as a consumer I have nothing but skeptical disdain.

camera for video conference and skype to call people since you're on a wireless 3G network anyway(for the models that have it) and acutally, lots of business people use them.

Oh you guys meant a webcam? I thought you were talking camera like on the iPhone that you point at somebody else and snap a pic.

precisely, but people will complain that it has lack of capability for this reason. The cheap $399 laptops have a built-in webcamera these days.

my Acer Aspire 1 had this two years ago with the same tech specs as an iPad but without that bitten fruit logo its just not as "magical" or "revolutionary"

yeah... cameras these days where many hats. Obviously you're not going to use a freakin ipad to take a damn picture. But holding it while talking (and seeing) someone on the other end would be badass... and NOT just for business people either!!
