Intakes and performance

Alot of people have been saying that an intake will probably give no more than a few hp. I was reading my friends Honda Tuning magazine and they did dyno tests with about 10 different brands of intakes on an RSX, recording temps. air flow and whp. They got results from -1 hp with a AEM short Ram to a huge 20 hp gain with an AEM CAI. Injen came at about 13hp. I know different intakes will give different performance depending on the engine. Has anyone seen any dyno tests, with just the intake change, on our protege/P5? I really like to get an intake, but after seeing the performance difference between different brands on the RSX I want to get the right one, I believe the brand you get makes a huge difference. Especially when you can get an AEM for $100(Canadian) less than an Injun with better performance (of course that might not be true on our engines).

ive never seen the dyno for our cars on this matter, all i can say is when i got my n-gin i was overly impressed. but i also say that without ever riding or seeing a pro or p5 with an aem. but thats just my $.02

hawkwind....that is the thing....mazda has already pretty well TWEEKED our motors....and all you will get out of them with the new intake is a few HP....the throttle response is the biggest difference you will notice....but you will NOT get huge hp gains no matter what intake you choose.

I have an AEM short ram air intake and the car seemed a lot faster when it was put on. Do you think its worth it ot buy the Injen CAI instead?

of the few people that have done REAL testing of the different intakes......they have seen very little real differences between the hp gains afforded by a ture CIA over the short rams....so its more of a personal preference from what I can see.....

Hey Sir Nuke...I have a 3" Re-Active/Ebay Intake...

Do u think i would gain more HP by changing it to a 2" Piping??

Chas

does anyone know if a 2.0 intake will fit a 1.8 99 es engine? want to buy a intake but all i see is 2.0 intakes

No, but u will gain (or recover) torque in low RPMs. 3" will give better power at high RPM compared to a 2" CAI. (just like exhaust piping.... huge ones make it suck in low rpm but do a bit better in high rpms)

Thanks for replying thunder bolt...i have been waiting for an answer for a long time...LOL

For those of you that havent seen:
MY MSP was the prototype for the Injen CAI intake
10-12 hp gain, I think thats pretty impressive
here are the dyno results with the CAI installed:

I really wish they had a dyno for the P5. I really don't want to spend that kind of money if its only 1-3hp. Has anyone contacted Injen about this? There dyno page shows nothing about the P5 and the MP3 dyno was taken off. You would think that just by having a CAI for the P5 they should have the dyno's for it as well. Unless of course there is a negative performance with it.

The reason why they won't post dyno's is b/c people will see how little a CAI will get you hp/torque wise!!

when you did your dyno was there a fan or something passing air by the cai?? the reason i believe that the numbers are not as great with an intake system over the stock intake system is because the car is not moving and air is not passed by the intake, unless a fan or some other devise is used, and then still the amount of air passed by the intake is still not as much as when u r driving. but thats just my opinion i dunno if there is actually any truth behind it but it is something to think about.

Ahh...A CAI is in the fender wall where no large amount of air will come!! I think you are talking about a ram air system!! Which our card doesn't have!

Chas

On a stock NA car (P5, MP3, ES), the intake is going to give you probably 2-3whp tops. SpicyMSP's dyno kicks ass because she already kicks ass with her turbo. A CAI with a turbo will open up a lot more horsepower than on a stock NA car.

Similarly on a NA car, if you had a header, better exhaust, but no CAI, you would probably see better than 2-3whp from adding the CAI. It all works together as a system.
