if you shift to reverse gear at speed of 60mph+,

oh wait, how about driving my dads forester with my parents in it and SLAMMING the brake pedal because my left foot managed to grab the end of it when I tried to "shift"

ROTFLMAO :D

I've done the same thing in my mom's auto BMW! However, I think my situation was worse. I was racing my friend's GS500 Motorcycle from a stand still. We start off the line and then I "shifted" into 2nd but actually stood on the brake pedal, the ABS protested and I nearly s*** my pants wondering wtf happened for a split second!

Whenever I start an automatic I also step down for the imaginary clutch too.

LOL, I guess we all go through that. I also did the slam on the brake because the pedal is huge and I think I'm about to shift. It's funny when it happens.

i took a rental sunfire from 20mph to park one time does that count!!

Same thing happened to me on my dads 626. I was teaching one of my female friends how to drive, and she slammed it from D to P. All I could hear was this terribly loud clicking sound. Sounded sorta like a bicycle with a playing card in the spokes but much louder.

She had only driven manual before the incident, so I guess I can understand. Scared the s*** out of me though. Car drove fine after that. I'll never be giving driving leasons in one of my cars ever again!!!:D :D :D

The mechanism in question I think only works for shifting out of the Park gear. It's probably a child safety "feature." I know this because one day my dad's Towncar wouldn't shift out of Park. We tried everything we could think of, and finally we discovered that the brake relay was damaged (brake lights weren't functioning). Since there was no signal that the brake had been depressed, the car would not shift out of Park or turn on the brake lights...

If this ever happens to you, you can temporarily fix the problem by
1. Turn engine off.
2. Turn key to "on" but don't start the engine.
3. You can now shift into Neutral. If on a hill, might want to hold down brake or parking brake
4. Start car
5. Shift to drive and hope to god no cop sees you w/no tail lights!

I know if the "safty release" button is pressed on a regular automatic, it can be shifted to any gear when the car's moving.

back then in high school I drove a corolla to a mall with some friends, we were at the parking lot now this stupid kid next to me saw something and yelled "STOP", grabbed the stick and slammed into "P", was going at about 10mph, wheels got locked and the car still moved for 2-3 feet, the noise was scary made me think the car's toasted, never let him sit in my car again.

for our automatic protege5 which does NOT have a "safty release" button, if you accidently hit it at a 45degree angle with enough force, or some kid doesn't know how to drive had to mess arround, or you're so confused and somehow "upshifted"

sure, nobody wants to do this on purpose, but sh*t happens, my original question is that can you shift to reverse at high speed?

okay the difference is,

-our sportronic, you can shift to any gear.

-normal automatics, can only shift between D-N when the safty release button isn't pressed.

i hope i didn't confuse anybody :)
