If You Boosted A N/A Protege, READ THIS

Ok got another question for those that did this...

did you keep that air filter thing in the hose, or did you take it out? If you kept it in, can you describe how it goes (like throttle body, check valve, air filter, solenoid)?

Thanks, trying to figure out my damn problem... dealership couldn't get it.

I've got a question. The past couple fill-ups, my tank has been acting like it is full even though it is not. Could this be caused by this? I do have this check valve installed (and I thought correctly), but maybe not.

I've been boosted for almost two months now and this issue just showed up last week, very weird.

i had the same problem after 3 months of boosting on my P5. go figure it had to happen in the dead of winter, but when i would go to refill the tank, the gas stations pump would keep shutting off acting like the cars gas tank was full. it would take me over 10 minutes some times to refill my damn tank! i finally noticed that the flap on the filler neck was missing somehow (probably from shoving the pump into the filler neck too hard). that little flap that springs back shut broke off and went into the tank causing blockage. after a while the problem just went away and now its fine???? maybe check to see if this is you too?

I think mine is gone too, haha. Any one have a picture of one with it in? I think I remember seeing it a while back (lol), and it was right near the top... like an inch or two in, you could poke it with your finger if you were so inclined.

Ugh... drop fuel tank fun time???

There was a lengthy debate about this awhile back, and I think we all came to the conclusion that protege's never came with the little "flaps."

I know, I thought mine did too. I'll check my '03 when I'm at my Dad's place, but from what I recall, we all jsut thought we had them, but no protege was ever made with them.

haha it is so weird, I could have swore there was one in there... but maybe not???

I just want to get it so I can fill up a full tank of gas at a time again lol

I found some check valves on ebay, i wonder which is the correct size, 3/8, 1/4, or 3/16 hose?

Sounds like you might have a saturated charcoal/ EVAP canister. Check your purge solenoid to see if it is stuck closed. If it is, that would be the problem you have. Just disconnect from evap hose and apply vacuum to the solenoid, and if you have the means, using a scan tool, activate the solenoid and see if the vacuum drops, if it doesn't, get a new solenoid. Another way is to apply vacuum and use a test light from the battery and any ground to activate solenoid.

I was just thinking about this thread and problem the other day, thanks for your input!

The theory sounds good to me. The problem wasn't there at first--perhaps I was running so rich it clogged all those things up. I'll check it out and let you know what I find!

got a chance to test the purge solenoid today and it appears to be working. I suppose there could be a problem in the wiring but I'm hoping that isn't the case.

Now I'm going to check the canister

More progress. The catch tank canister in the engine bay looked good, so today I moved to the rear of the car to check things out.

First was the CDCV. The solenoid itself operated fine when I tested it, so I kept going down the line. Next was the evaporative gas check valve (two way).

Blowing into the atmosphere side worked, I could feel air come out the CDCV side. However, if I did the opposite, nothing would come out the atmosphere side! So that seems like all pressure that should be venting out to atmosphere was stuck.

Unfortunately the dealership did not have the part in stock so it had to be ordered and will not arrive until Monday. I am very excited to see if this will finally fix my problems. If it does, I will be pleased but at the same time EXTREMELY IRKED that the dealership didn't figure this out when I took it to them last year. Needless to say I'm irked with them anyhow, and was hesitant to even order the part through them... :)

Not much of an update yet... got the part Monday and tested it by blowing it, works about the same as the old one. I must have misinterpreted how they work.

So I continued to inspecting things, air filter looked good so did the charcoal canister. There was a decent amount of fuel in the lines... maybe a couple of ounces.

Last thing I want to check is the valve mentioned in this thread, and see that is in working order. Then I will reassemble and test.

I am also installing a Zeitronix gauge system w/ logging capabilities today. That will be extremely useful in getting a good tune. Perhaps taking some fuel out will help this problem...

For being Lazy

When I came across this post couple years back I ran to the dealer for the parts, I only did the pcv and forgot about the check valve. Well after being boostd for 2yrs it happened the cel popped up for the check vavle, whats really funny is I forgot where I put the cv. So I get ready to order a new one and guess what happens the damn things pops up out of the blue. So if I had not been lazy it would be one less thing to worry about.

I cleared my cel, installed the new cv, and fixed a loose connection for fan. So in a week or if I drive the car around I will see if that will fix the problem

Been driving around with no problems, if you don"t have recommend getting it.

I do have a problem now, when I pump gas into tank it wont let me. It starts to fill then stops, gas is all the to the top and I don't even have a 1/4 tank. Anybody have any ideas on what it could be?

sounds like you have some backpressure. I am no expert, but there is supposed to be a vent as you fill to make sure things like this don't happen. Are you sure your fuel gauge isn't off? you're driving the appropriate # of miles on a tank?

I get about 250 miles to the tank
