I was wondering if anyone knows of a company that sells ported and polished heads for the mazdaspeed. Also a good place that sells cams? I have a local shop that does great work, but I can't afford to not have my car for 2+ weeks. And I also haven't found any cams yet. Help, please!!!

What mods do you have done to your car so far? Ported/polished head and cams would probably be the last thing I'd do when I go forged since everything will be out anyway.

Right now I'm pretty much stock with the exception of the more moderate upgrades, cai, grounding kit. I just sold my honda, therefore I've been contacting beau @mam to find out about the shortblock, and if I gotta pull the motor anyway to put that in, I might as well do the head. I've only got about $6000 to spend, which may or may not seem like a lot. But I want to get the bigger items on my list out of the way. The somewhat smaller things like fmic will come later, like in the summer of 05'. For now I'm just trying to get the '' whole" motor done, and turbo-back. This is all just preparation for whats to come hopefully by late next summer.
Also, who would I contact to get a spare head?

id see if you can find a used one first thats in good condition, dealer will prolly not include the vasoline you will need when they bend you over.

Besides a dealer, since all the internals will be replaced, and there has to be machine work done, I was just wanting a used head. Still in decent condition, but without having to pay the dealer prices.

Since I now have 3 spare heads and 2 blocks I may sell one to you... give me an offer.

Jeez, Blk... Hoarding a little are we? Definitly buy it from him. =) If you can't/don't want to for some reason, go to http://www.car-part.com/

I'm getting custom cam grinds done through Crower, but for head work, a local place is your best bet; You're fortunate enough to HAVE a local place that does that! I don't have one closer than CT that I know of, unfortunatly. =/

If your gonna get it ported, make sure you get before and after flow numbers.

Blk, I have no idea what they are worth, when looking on the car-parts the price ranges from $165-$900. Like I said previously, I am a newb to the mazdaspeed, and a reformed honda-head. If you could initiate the price, it might be a little more helpful. Also is the head on a standard protege the same as on a speed?

Just be cautious with "porting".... You can easily do the opposite of what you are wanting to achieve (power).

I've got a guy here in town I use for that kind of work. I just generally have him clean everything up and do a few tweaks here and there. Not often do I have a head "ported". However, on my MSP I'd probably get a little more aggressive than I've done in the past because I plan on upgrading the turbo and running 15psi daily. I will also want to have the head flow-tested also to make sure everything is more or less equal.

There is also a number of Mazda wrecking yards throughout the U.S. I know of couple in my area. I wouldn't want to spend anymore than $50 on a head.

Yep, the MSP head is the same as the Protege FS series head (FS-DE, that is), and can be had from anywhere between 50 - 200 dollars, depending if the head comes with cam shafts, valves, springs, and so on.

Just shop around, and try and make a deal with them over the phone. Should be pretty easy.

I know before, when I was just a visitor, I saw a post in regards to someone that had built head packages for the mazdaspeed. I must have lost the contact on that company. But if I could get a head for under $200, even with the cost of building the head would be far less than going through that company. The parts that my local was going to use was s.s. valves, bronze valve guides, street/strip port, valve job, bowl and gasket, surfacing, cleaning of surfaces, and disassemble/assemble of head, cost-$roughly $1200. My 2 problems are first, locating/purchasing the head, and second (which is actually to me more important) to find good turbo cams. The only reason for the cams being a vital part of the headwork is that I don't have a lot of downtime to spare, and I would rather pay the local since I'm paying for assembly anyway.

Well, Paeco would charge you about twice that, and take forever. And none of the vendors on here that I know of have offered a pre-built head. Crower might do head work, but I'm uncertain of that. I know they do cams and whatnot.

Honestly, if you're going SS valves, bronze guides and disassembly/reassembly of head with the porting, 1200 isn't too bad. Go for oversized exhaust valves, by the by, if you can. Maybe unshroud the intake valves, too. =) Hehe.

flat black, very nice suggestions, lol. Now If someone could point me to those somewhat non-existant cams. Also blk if you could shoot me a price for the head, I could get this process rolin. (yippy)

why change cams, stock cams are really hard to beat for a turbo car when finding custom ones as you know is hard, its not worth the effort. save the stock cams.

Hmm? I don't have a head. =) I was saying get one from BlkZoomZoom. For him, I'd say give him $100, and call it a day, if he wants to get rid of it. Hehee.

Uhm, well, the stock cams can be improved on greatly, as far as turbo cars are concerned. Increased lift is important for turbos, where you want to avoid overlap if possible. N/A cars want greater overlap, though, for the most part, so make sure you get your cams set up accordingly.

sorry i meant to add zoomzoom on the end of that last comment. I was wondering if anyone has tried web cams on a mazdaspeed though? Blkzoomzoom any idea on a price?
