Home Audio receivers

Anyone here sell this stuff, or is really into it and can pass along some advice?

Every year around this time I think about getting a new receiver for xmas. Killer is, I can never find one good enough.

I was really into audio equipment many years back. Was even a DJ for 11 years. But, that was a long time ago, and audio stuff has evolved to the point where I don't really know what I should look for anymore.

I have a system that I paid a fortune for many years back. I love this system, but it's aging. It consists of Carver power amps, pre-amp, And Cerwin Vega speakers 450 watt per side. My carver amps/preamps ran about 2 grand each at the time. Even today, you can't get these things off of ebay without spending a s*** load of money. Very good amps. I also have some cheaper amps just for my rear channel/center speakers. Here's the thing, 4 amps, one pre-amp, seperate eq that I'll never part with (very cool looking ) cd payer, dvd player, 2 vcr's,xbox, still have tape deck ( i don't know why ) Basically, my setup when stacked in a entertainment center is as tall as I am. It takes up a lot of room which besides it's age, is really the only problem. This setup though works, and sounds better then most I have ever heard. Seperate amps allow me to tweak each speaker to the way they sound best. The fronts are on one eq, the backs on another, and the center has it's own bass/treble/mid controls as well. This is VERY important to me. This setup is great for music, and great for home threatre as this system HAS to do both. It also has a multiroom option. My goal here is to replace the many amps, with one receiver. I may keep one Carver amp for the bigger Cerwin's.

Whatever receiver I come across in town is the basic bla bla amp that has no control over the sound besides maybe a bass/treble settings that adjust all the speakers at once. The rest of the options are all pretty much the same on most amps, being 5.1/7.1 multiroom etc etc. But, I'm looking for an amp that has at least 125 watts per side, ideally with pre-amp out so I could use at least 1 carver still for the big speakers, and I want control over each speaker. I want an amp with built in control that will allow me to adjust at least the bass/treble in each speaker as I see fit. I also would love to have oncreen display through a tv, ethernet port if possible.

In a big city, I would just walk in to a big store, find the one I want, the sound I want, and get it. But, here I have to order it in. That creates a problem as if I do that, get it home, and it sounds like crap ( did this once already ), I'm stuck.

btw, I hate kenwood amps. I don't like Pioneer, and basically I'm thinking Denon, Sunfire, Harmon Kardon, etc. high end s*** but I don't know which one. If I could save some money and find something that will do the same, I'm not stun either.

IT would really help if your going to answer this, that you have had experience with Carver amps. They are to this day, still the best amps I have ever used. Bob Carver now makes Sunfire amps, Carver no longer exists. They have great bass, clean highs, power allmighty, and the mids aren't overpowering like a Kenwood amp would be.

Down the road I'm hoping to replace my Sony tv with a DLP/screen or a Plasma too.

I'm tearing out my basement right now planning a new rec room :)

you sound like a big audiophile  . I would look into yamaha receiver/amps they have superb transisters and less than .01 thd the next time the rep for yamaha comes in i will see what there top end s*** is.

i know circuit city sells them both & from what i have been told to get a good denon receiver u talking 2,500 usd as a starting point

what is your price range? because there is some seriously awesome stuff out there....

Bob Carver's Sunfire stuff is awesome as are a few other brands, for more pedestrian stuff the Denon, and Yamaha's are great options... if you were to get Pioneer I would only get their "Elite" stuff...

as for HK Im not a huge fan.... also check out some Onkyo or some really nice top line Integra onkyo's

onkyo seems to have some network enabled amps. interesting.

As for price range, I know I'm going to spend a bit to get what I want. Would like to keep it under 3 grand Canadian. Really would like something about 1500 Canadian though to keep money for other things...being new Mazda :) or plasma :)

I love the Sunfire stuff, but it's $$$$$$$$ I was crazy getting the Carver stuff years ago, but it has lasted me a long time. Over 4 grand in amps, and my cerwin's were 2 grand as well.

sunfire by carver is nice stuff..I really enjoy my denon though..If you want to get nutty..there is always bigger and better..but for me, denon 5803, is all I need.

is there anything actually wrong with the amps? why not just get a really nice 7.1 preamp?

yeah I have thought about that. But, I need to cut down the size of this thing so i can get rid of the need of a large entertainment stand. So if I could go from 4 amps to 1 or two, I don't need a cd player/tape deck no more. Heck I don't even need a DVD player anymore as the xbox does so much more then any dvd player can, I could use a much smaller stand. If I get a projection tv, or something similar, they usually have small stands already that might work.

All the amps work, but 2 are hideous looking. I want to keep the carver amps for perhaps powering speakers elsewhere in the house. My house is going to be all hooked up when I am finished. SPeakers everywhere. I'm going to have a pool table/games room area. Dance floor next to bar, rec room with the home theatre all down stairs. Party house basically :) At least that's the plan. But I don't have a huge house, so I have to save space somewhere. My existing entertainment stand is 6 feet long, and over 5 feet tall. If I want to go to a larger tv, that's gone anyways.

I used to use Yamaha's years ago. Nick named them Yammie's. We had quite a few amps for my Dj'ing years. I loved them, I will look at them. I really have no hands on experience with Denon so I don't know if they have the sound I'm looking for.

I have the Onkyo ts-dx787 and it has been flawless for 3 years running. I would highly recommend it.

I have an older Denon 5 channel receiver that I am *extremely* happy with. Excellent sound quality, and has lasted several years with no probs.

Witht he pieces that you have I would stay away from both the Denon and Yamaha pieces especially if you are trying to use their internal amps. Great units but no where near what you are working with and used to, I sell Yamaha and like it for strong basic set-ups but for what you have it doesn't compare. From the list of what you have I would just replace the pre-amp with a new one. To get even close to what you have now will cost you a lot of money. For a great all-in-one unit Lexicon has just released thier first receiver the RV-8, 140 watts per channel, 7-channel, but you are looking at a $7999 USD price tag. Other choice for me that is more in the price range you mentioned would be the Marantz SR9300 at $2999 USD. Seriously though I would keep most of the set-up that you have right now, it's a lot better than anything you are looking at in that price range, maybe just change the pre-amp to something newer if you don't have Dolby-EX and DTS-ES already. And if you are re-doing the basement in to a rec room then you can build a custom cabinet to house everything in a more organized fashion that doesn't dominate.
If you need some more advise or info drop me a PM and I'll get you my work number and e-mail since I sell the mid to high end stuff for a living.

looks like I got some reading to do. Greg, I think I agree with what you said, and that's what I end up deciding every time I try to replace what have. I'm going to start reading up on some of these units here that you guys mentioned. Can't say I have used any marantz stuff...hmmm.

Thanks

hey, i work in a store that does nothing but high end CUSTOM home theater systems and distributed audio networks. www.av4home.com website kinda sucks but there are some pictures on there of homes that we have done. pm with a list of exactly what you want to do with the system and i will get you some model and prices of items that i sell. or just recommend some good stuff. denon and harmon kardon are good but i have systems that will destry both of those companys for about the same price. please let me know if you have any questions or want some info from me.

I've been in the Pro Audio biz for 3 years. We sell over 500 different manufacturers. And I know people for just about everything.

We sell Denon and HK, Onkyo receivers due to our size, We are Marantz (actually D&M Pro now, Denon and Marantz merged) Distributers as well. We are an authorized Sunfire dealer as well.

The sunfire stuff is hands down some of the best out there.

There probably isn't really a receiver that is going to give you the control you are asking for, maybe the sunfire. But generally you have to go seperate preamp/amps to get full control over things.

As much as I hate to say it, the weak point in your "old" system is definetely the speakers. Speakers are only good until you hear something better. I've heard alot of CV speakers, they are "ok" at best.

Definitive Technology makes very good speakers. We also are the US distributors for Krix Loudspeakers, these are also very nice speakers, very attractive looking as well.

I've had experience with Carver amps. AWESOME amps.

I sell Panasonic Plasma's as well, they are the best Plasma (highest contrast). Also have the JVC and Sony plasmas as well. To note on DLP tv's, you will have a delay on the audio for 60% of movies you watch, the processing in the DLP throws off the audio a bit so it looks like the movies are asian dubs.

I can get you a REALLY good deal on a 42" Panasonic plasma that doesn't have a tuner built-in. We bought about 20 off Panasonic and got a great price on the break.

I don't really feel like typing more answers at the moment... if you wanan talk, email me at work or call me.

Hope that helps,

And yes, i'm a huge audio/video geek. I get to hear systems and speakers here that most people could only dream of affording. It's pretty cool. Biggest thing with audio is alot of it is subjective, and the other big side is that until you've heard something better you won't know what your missing, that is the easiest way to put it.

I had a harmon kardon, sold it for my yamaha and never looked back. If I were to do it again Id stick with the yamaha and definately consider some denons as well.

Good Luck
