Sup fellas, about to pull the trigger on an HID kit from http://www.xenonexpert.com/xtreme_hid.html but I can't decide on the color.

Can you folks that upgraded to HID kits post some pics of the different color temps, and how they look in our standard projector headlights.

I'm looking for an OEM look, similar to BMW/ACURA etc....which seem to be pure white, but have hints of purple from certain angles. I don't want 5000k as it's too blue, so either the 4300k or the 6500k....but some pics or recommendations from you guys would be awesome.

Thanks!

4500k is the whitest and brightest, 5000k isn't noticeably different at all and isn't blue.

6000k is white with a touch of purple
8000k is white mix with a lot of purple
1000k is white mix with a lot of blue

then after that you start getting crazy colors.

You want either 4500k or 5000k

i have 6000k and there is nothing purple its just very white

I'm getting 8k and it is just a slight hint of blue, I have a friend who has them and is upgrading to 12k. Personally, I think it's retarded to go that high but I like 8k.

It is dumber to go higher then 8k to me too, you start loosing light and are much more likely to get pulled over for blue/purple/pink lights.

For best light OUTPUT, stick with 4300K - 6000K. In terms of what colour you want, YMMV.

last week phillyb came over and we lined our cars up with my wife's car against a wall, I knew i should have taken a picture of it...

stock MS3 4300K was yellowy hid white, not the brightest
the Jetta with 6000K was by far the nicest looking color and the whitest
my ms3 with 8000K was very nice but more of a blue color

Overall I think phillyb is going to swap his stock out for 6000K as I think he liked the color/brightness the best out of all of them. I know 6000K if brighter than my 8000K but I just like the color of 8000K :)

The blue/purple flicker seen from the edge of the beam on BMW's, etc is a function of the projector optics, not the lamps. All OEM HIDs use 4100-4300k lamps which are white. If you truly want that "flicker" then I suggest looking for some actual HID projectors to retrofit into your headlights, and color mod them by placing washers between the shield and the projector bowl to allow light to leak out and cause the flicker. You can't do that on the OE halogens projectors as the shield is attached. Even the OE Mazda HID projectors can get a pretty amazing end result.

Oh and 6500k is more blue than 5000k. ;)

EDIT: Here's some comparison pics between the halogen projectors and the HID projectors.

OE halogens with 55w HID installed.

OE HID projectors (retrofitted into OE halogen housings w/ evo8 clear lenses and w/ a color mod)

Same car btw, and no contest as to which is better AFAIC.

i have retro solutions 55w 4300k, they are extremly bright >.> i get high beamed all the time =/ the cut off is barely 3 ft off the ground

I have the stock HID's from my GT in my car. How hard is it to upgrade from the 4300k oem stockers to 6000k hids? would I have to drop my front bumper?

no dude, your changing a light bulb.

mazda isnt going to design a modern car that would require one to disassemble the front end to swap a light bulb.

Technically speaking Mazda requires removing the front bumper for headlight replacement (at least for the HIDs) and states for you to bring the car to them to change the lights.

dandydaniel all you need to do is get a new set of D2S lamps in the color temp. of your choice and swap out the ones in your headlights now. It's possible to do without removing the bumper/headlights, but can be tight if you have very large hands.

fact:

Apexcone 4300K hid kit is MUCH WHITER AND BRIGHTER than the stock OEM 4300K hid kit that comes in teh MS3 GT

I'm running thier 4300K plug and play kit and it is WHITE! no tint of yellow at all

But, each company is going to be a little different.

My wife is running a 4000K techone kit and it is even whiter than my 4300K

neither have even the slightest tint of yellow or blue

As long as you stay in the 4000K to 6000K, you will get the most usable light

As soon as you start going blue-purple, you significantly reduce the amount of useable ligth your eyes can see

is it actually 4300k or is it 4500k? All the apexcone bulbs I find seem to be only available in 4500k.

i am 100% sure it was 4300K, but after searching myself, they all now say 4500K. either way, it's pure white, no yellow at all

I believe 4500K gives the maximum useable light. Anything higher or lower than that adds more color (lower = yellow, higher = blue/purple) but less usable light.

that's correct. 4300(4500K) is OEM yeiling the greatest 'usable" light

but, i do have a 4000K kit in one car and there is NO yellow to it at all, it's made by Techone, so, i'm not sure if they just mislabelled the bulb, cause from all the HID charts iv'e seen 4000K should have a yellow tinge

everyone saying "usable light" is referring to lumens which is light output

like many threads before this can be summed up in form and function....so which one do you prefer? form or funciton?
