Mazda 3s hatch
hey guys my name is Travis.

i currently own a 2007 Mazda 3, its a fun car, some get up, handles great.. but i want more. ive done minor mods, mostly appearance. have done exhaust and intake.

i've tossed the idea around about getting a protege, gutting it completely, building a motor and having a blast with it. it wasn't until we were doing the exact same thing to a buddy's car (2000 ford focus) that i decided to put the plan in motion. he decided to completely replace the motor, a 2.0 spi motor, and put in a 2.3 duratec which he further plans to turbo and long story short its going to be a beast for everything he has planned for it.

found a 2001 protege. only information i have on the car is its white; missing a fender, bumper, and hood; and the engine is bad for some reason. plan on going and seeing the car in person soon. the seller also mentioned having access to spare body parts so hopefully that won't be an issue.

now i don't know a lot about the car but ever since i purchased my 3 ive been in love with mazdas. i haven't searched much around the forum but ive read what i could on wikipedia and other sites. i hear that the internals of the fs 2.0 motors are not very strong. im not sure what limits people have pushed them to or how capable an N/A build could be with the right parts. so my question is should i replace any internals or merely see that the engine is in good running order and slap a turbo on it and go?

the car will be completely gutted. maybe a radio... maybe it will have heat. no A/C.. no powersteering. i hope to purchase a nice set of coil overs possibly in the future, will most likely run the cars stock suspension as long as possible. and i hear the ES models have all wheel brakes which would be fantastic if the car im looking at is an ES.

so im mainly looking for feedback. right things to do. wrongs things to avoid. any sites to help me along my way.

thanks to anyone to puts their two cents in and hope to post a lot more threads soon!

the FS-DE motor is not strong at all yes it will take a turbo but only at 6psi on the small gt25, so if i were you and you were wanting a fast car i would build a motor and slap a bigger turbo on it. but if you were to do this its $$$.

You might also want to look at some salvage ES Proteges. While looking in Craig's list, I saw a couple that were priced low. Often, salvage vehicles had fairly minor damage repaired and can be great bargain buys. I know one thing - my 02 ES is the best handling sedan I have ever driven, and I've driven a 4-year old M3 sedan that was not nearly as light on its feet as this ES. The steering ratio is exceptionaly quick.

oh and if you need a new bumper, I got one you can buy from me :D. There is a LOT of great info on this forum. I suggest going to the different forums from the main page and reading up on the turbo and NA sides. Long story short though, without major major $$, NA is not gonna get you anywhere in terms of making big power. The turbo thing is exactly as cyclops said. Good luck man and keep us updated. Glad to have you here.

i disagree with the fsde not being stong it holds up to 250hp at 6psi on a 25 your lucky if you at 180 ive had my stock turbo at 15 pounds before with the correct mods to go along with the higher boost it will be just fine. for most people putting a stock gt25 on there protege will be enough to make them happy
