Head work

Yeah I only stared at it for 3hrs while we tried to figure out how to get an accurate measurment of lift.,... and it totally left my mind. lol

After reading your chart there is no way I will reach your numbers on this bench. Gaining 100cfm is almost impossible, especially without going bigger valves.

yeah flow benchesall flow differently unfortunately. i just wish i got a base figure...

but as you can see, it's almost useless going higher than 0.350" valve lift the flow figures significantly slow down...well with the stock head that is...

another point to note (which i keep on telling everyone), stop upgrading only the intake cam! the intake side already flows apx 15% more than the intake side!!!

lol. I'm curious to see what wagners F/I cam specs are gonna be. I asked crane about some cams but they quoted me some rediculous prices, and wouldn't even be able to come up with the cams I wanted.

I would never change the camshafts on a street MSP. Big intercooler, big boost, ported head and manifolds,good exhaust with cut out, worked GT28RS, MPI Tuner, extra injectors, and C16 fuel= 370whp.

This would be a street legel car and idle like stock.

Yeah street legal means nothing to me. lol
Unfortunatley I will never have a fmic, or a gt28rs.
After getting the quote from Crane, I talked to a couple of Mazda engineers about the lash adjustments. I was told tightening them up alittle will help quite abit with the duration. I haven't really played around with it yet though.

all of the above + cams = 450whp.

have a look at cams for the s15 silvia. cams on a turbo'd engine make a massive difference and almost no loss of driveability

I'm gonna wait to see the specs. before I decide.

I'm curious what areas did other people improve upon on their heads? Focus, Twilght? There are many ways to port a head, and many more ways to screw it up... This is the first 4-banger head and also the first 4-valve set-up.

Upon first impressions with the head:

I will be widening the floor of the short turn radius of the bowls to promote mid- and high lift flow,

De-shrouding the valves,

Slightly increasing the exhaust side port exit,

I won't be knife-edging the intake divider (haven't heard any good from this),

Basically I will concentrate more on valve seat area, chambers, and areas near the ports as this is the most critical areas for flow...

I am curious on what others did for porting...

Don't forget to knife edge between the runners.

yeah re-read my post lol, I hit the button to quick.

Knife edging is kindove a no-no.

the valve seat area is a place where you can get a lot of power.

jsut make sure the work doesnt suffer any tight turns and the valve area is slightly smaller than the opening (to increase air speed on the intake side). also, dont make the runners too smooth on the intake side. too smooth and the air and fuel wont get an opportunity to mix as easily

Yeah from what I've been told and read too smooth isn't good for either ports. You want a certain roughness to promote correct carbon build-up.

Finally picked the head up today. Found out why my numbers were so much lower than everyone elses.... He flowed each valve seperatly. So my as cast numbers totalled are:

Intake a. 91.1
Intake b. 90.8
total= 181.9

Exhaust a. 81
Exhaust b. 79
Total= 160

After I'm done with the block prep., I'll start on the head.

Well I found out how hard it is to take pics. of headwork and make it look good. After discussing the time table with the guy that flowbenches it for me it looks like I will doing all the ports at once then getting it flowed again.

Heres some pics of my progress so far.. yeah the pics suck, I just couldn't get the lighting right.
