Hmmm need some help here... For the DIY mesh grill mod.... After u cut out the stock honeycomb in the middle... how do u get rid of the bumps and stuff?? sandpaper?? would it scratch the paint on the grill? Thz need some pointers

Please tell me you didn't cut out the honey comb part. You don't have to do that for the DIY grille. You just lay it over the original grill and then use metal ties or strap ties.

nope i didnt cut it yet.... but by cutting the honeycomb part it looks alot cleaner..... thats how some members did theirs on their protege and thats how all the impreza ppl did theirs.... cause the grill im using now is not my origional.... this is a 2nd hand one that i got.. so i can tinker with it :)

Oh, OK. If I were you, I'd buy the quality grill mesh from somewhere like JC Whitney. The stuff from Home Depot is ok, but it's not that great. I'm going to replace mine with a billet grill when Precision design starts selling them. When that will be, I have no idea.

Well it is better is cut the orginal grill and believe me it is noooo easy task. You need a dremel tool to grind all the grill ends that will be left behind. Be careful because as you start sanding and taking away from the grill, the outside frame becomes very bendy and unsturdy. Take a lot of time and care sanding and cleaning that is the most time consuming and important part. You then need to form and bend the mesh grill to fit perfectly and then attach how you feel most convenient.

That's my input. But really don't just lie the mesh over the factory one and tie on....that's doesn't look good.

It doesn't look good?

I beg to differ. Mine looks pretty damn good. I've seen pics of your grill, and I'm sorry to tell you, but mine looks exactly like it. If you did spend a lot of time on it, it was a waste. If you don't believe me that it looks good, just ask the people who have seen it, LinuxNinga, Jag, Leonardo, need I go on.

Ok mister defensive, In my opinion it looks cheesy and you can tell a difference.

My purpose for having a mesh grill is to make it look clean, I don't think having a black grill behind it that you can see and some twisty ties looks very clean.

Good for you if you like to twisty tie things on, I spend time and effort on mine.

We are two different people, don't get bent out shape because I don't think it looks good...like you said everyone else >>tells<< you they like it.

Yup im with u on this one about it looking better to cut the origional honeycomb and replacing it with mesh.... Wel of course going over the origonal grill with mesh is one of the ways to do it... but i guess sinc ei have the time i will just go the full 10 yards by cutting the honeycomb etc etc.... Well noone is right or wrong on how to do it... just that different strokes for different folks i guess.. :D

Oh ya MP3chick Wut did u use to cut off the honey comb? Hacksaw? dremel ?

and also.. i find the gutter guard stuff from home depot pretty weak and flimsy....... where can i find some decent mesh that arnt so $$ ?

You defintely need a variety of tools and different sandpaper grits. Really prepare yourself for the amount of time this will consume. It took about 2 days or so for mine. No biggie, just didn't have a grill then. When you initially cut the honeycomb cut as far down (close to the frame) as you can safely so you don't have so much dremeling to do. It is very difficult to do the corner areas so you'll have to leave more honeycomb in there and dremel it out.

Oh and the dremel battery wears down fast so it helps to have a cord.

if i remember right was it you that said your bf did it for you. i bet you wouldnt have a clue what to do without him. and stop putting other peoples stuff down. yeah that is cool huh?

MP3chick : So did u use a cardboard cutter or hacksaw to cut out the honeycomb before using the dremel?

And jus another Q... does any of u know how to take off the black strip on the top of the grill? ive been going at it for like a day and i still cant figure out how to take it off! Grr... i only see a tab of some sort on the back.. thats it... Pointers appreciated..

Oh ya.. and im planning to paint my mesh flat black.. :)

Actually I did do a lot of it and yes with my boyfriends help. I didn't put anyones twistie job down. Simply stated I didn't want to do it like that because I thought it looked cheesy.

As I said if he likes it great, good for him. We exchange opinions on this forum don't we? I believe so because I've seen a lot of them. It's not like I seen a picture and said "Oh man that looks like s***", I haven't seen it so how would I know. I just know that when I went to do mine I tried out a few different ideas and this looked the best to me.

thz for ur quick replies guys ! :)

Oh ya... so does ANYONE know how to take off that black strip?? its kinda in the way...

I don't take any offense to anything she has said. It just show's immaturity. You are probably between the ages of 17 to 19. Am I right? And no I'm not putting you down b/c you are young, I too was that age where I knew everything. Enough og that though.

As for taking off the shiny black part of the grill, you have to take the front bumper completely off. You have to do that in order to get to that part. It isn't really that hard to do. I took mine off when I was trying to take the amber lenses out of my headlights. It's hard to tell you every bolt to take out, but if you get under there and look around, you will figure it out.

Ha, geez your pretty good. Nope sweetie I'm over 20 as if that makes any difference.

If you get offended when people give you honest answers then you have some issues.

Immaturity has nothing to do with someone's opinion.

Take it like a man.

Whatever....., I'm tired of toying with you. Go tell your boyfriend that you need to get laid. Maybe that will put you in a better mood.

Yeah whatever, what was that about immaturity again??
Your Pathetic !!!!

I'd be the first one to give someone promps on a good job, but If we are here to share opinions and be honest then what do you expect? Not everyone is going to like the same thing.
