ok my question is i am looking into getting a greddy catch can but im still kinda unclear about what they exactly do. I know that they kinda clean or do something so that buildup in the engine isnt as severe. My question is has anybody done this or know if it can be done to the protege5.

Easy explanation : it catches excess fluids. Do a search we've went over this a few times somewhere on here....you will probably find more detailed threads about it.

does anybody know if putting this on will void any kind of warranty
It shouldn't "void" your warranty at all, but I would keep a spare length of tube around in case the car ever has to go in to Mazda for service and they feel like starting something over it or if your state's inspection people are that anal about things. All it is really doing is catching the fluids that would normally be burnt (so they say) by the engine.

A cheap alternative is to buy an inline fuel filter and route it the same way you would the catch can. FYI, just make sure to keep the arrows on the fuel filter in line with the flow of things from the valve cover to the intake.

Edited because I can't read what I'm writing because I'm so damn exhausted.
