Going Turbo, By Summer of 07

Did you get the turbo in Matthew? I got mine in yesterday, but I hit alot of obstacles. I definitely don't have a/c anymore. I broke my damn downpipe too. lol I rigged it up temporarily til I get another one. I still have to put in the 02 clamp and hook up the oil pressure gauge lines. I was surprised, I didn't even hear the turbo spinning when I cranked it up to check the fuel pressure. I guess I got the wastegate open to far. I need to close it a little. I took it out to see if it actually ran, not to boost or anything. it tried to boost and started to take off, but I let off the gas so I wouldn't lean out. then I heard the HKS give a little squeak. Can't wait till I get the o2 clamp in and get her tuned. Maybe I can get it done in between the thunderstorms we are having today.

Yes and were having some problems as well. The Install went A-Ok car started on the first try, however because im running a external wastegate im venting to atmosphere *which sounds really crappy*

Also the downpipe that is supposed to connect to the exhaust is leaking which will get fixed friday, took it to a performance shop and he welded half way around but could not get around to the other side because his shop was about to close and didnt have time to get the J-pipe all the way off and welded.

3rd problem, The guy at the shop was going tap the exhaust after the 2nd cat and put a 02 bung on however he didnt have any left, so im running with a CEL, which is fine that will get fixed friday as well.

4th and final problem, Car is stalling. Due to a Vac leak or the BOV we think its the BOV so were going to order some pipes to relocate the MAF

All in All it was nervewrecking and a blast at the same time. we started friday night and ended saturday night around 8pm Jeremy AKA Little Beavis is by far the most helpful person i have ever met. The car will be better this friday.

On a good note, we were boosting to 10 PSI easily last night and man did it feel good.

Yeah the missing 2nd oxygen sensor CEL is no problem at all. The stalling is due to the MAF location if you haven't relocated it. Just make sure it's at least 4-6 inches away from the BOV so it doesn't get messed up from the turbulence. And yeah, an open wastegate dump does typically sound pretty nasty.

You are insane to hit 10psi on an automatic though.. unless you have a built tranny or the money for one layin around :P

If you don't mind Matt, While this thread is active, I have a few questions. I had my 2nd o2 sensor on my header that had the spark plug non fouler trick on it. Would it be best to remove that and just put in the sensor by itself in the j pipe? or leave it like it is. and another question. Using an AEM wideband guage while idling I am getting a lean signal, but I have right at 48psi according to the inline fuel pressure gauge. The gauge is on the return line right before it goes into the Aftermarket FPR. I hope to god that is right. it seems right, because when I adjust it, the gauge reacts right. It scared me last night when I cranked it up and it started to slightly smoke. I hope it was the spilt oil and coolant burning off. What do you guys think?

oh hell no man we capped it at 4-5 the spring was set at 5 so it was spiking pretty high lol my wheels were just spinning in 2nd, its fine now but the stalling OMG i dont even have to give it a little gas the RPM's would drop from 2500 in 2nd gear to almost 0 i would have to blip the throttle just to keep it from stalling. I just talked to jeremy were going to relocate the MAF next friday

The engine was smoking? as for my idle. as for my idle im usually 38 PSI when the car is sitting idle and around 42-43 PSI when the car is crusing, when i gave it boost last night it spiked to around 80 PSI which Jeremy said is what i want to look for while boosting, seeing as i dont have a wideband which will be my next option

Wow, I'm running a little rich, I'll knock it down a little today, then. It wasn't alot of smoke, not from the engine, just the turbo and manifold area. it smelt funny, sorta like when I put the header in before.

as for the burning my car did it too, they all do once turbo's are put on it didnt for a couple hours then it returned back to normal it smells gross

It was soo funny yesterday afternoon looking for a muffler shop or any shop driving around with no front bumper and my hazards on lol

I guess I won't worry then. I'll just do the best I can. I guess I did a pretty decent job for someone who never put a turbo in. Except for the lack of 90* silicone couplers. I have to make do using loads of 45*pipes and straight couplers. I will fix that eventually. lol

Ya I'm now spending more then what i thought i wanted to but, hey now my excuse is to my g/f "I cant stop now or else i wont have a car"

what can u say to that? hmm? hmm? nothing LOL so were looking at 275-300 for the welding around 170 for the MAF relocation so another 600 to the 2200 plus 750 i owe Jeremy still which he is graceiously letting me do in installments

so 2200+300+200 = 2700

hah guess it is impossible to make a cheap turbo kit, oh well

I completely understand. I have spent somewhere around 3000-3300 and I just spent $380 more to buy a new downpipe from corksport. I have to buy more silicone elbows too. GOSH, If I would have known. Oh well, I know I will like it. lol. Good luck with your whole setup, bro. I hope mine don't blow up.

It's not impossible. Ever hear of the $200x challenge? (Ie this year will be the $2007 challenge...). Basically, you have to buy and build a race car that will do a drag, autocross, and concours event for under $2007. They've got cars running 10s lol

Ya, i just went out side to check my engine is a little smokey because im venting to atmosphere and not to mention a little cold outside, no leaks so far and no burning oil. which is good. im just anxious to get this stuff welded my car sounds like some old ass beater when that wastegate dumps.

From what i can tell i dont see any vac leaks that are causing me to stall however i also didnt check under the car to see if the the leaks might be coming from the intercooler because i dont have a garage and its slush outside so like i said s*** will have to wait till friday :)

I hope my install goes as smoothely as your's... But I doubt it.
If you guys can keep posting any setbacks you encounter I can try to account for them before the big date.
Thanks and good luck with the rest of the work.

heh, I hope mine goes this smoothly as well. My install is the week before Gmalatrasi's :D

Yay turbo P5s.

aMaff, those dudes must be wicked sweet at ghetto-rigging junk and finding deals of the century.

They are. KCB HIW is one of them. The HIW stands for Hope It Works lol

hey matt sure its not the trans contol modual thingy acting up??

and maby after you get the rest of the exhaust welded up you can come by and show off the goods?

no its defenitly not the transmission control soleniod, its clearly a vac leak and i measured the blow of valve from the MAF even though there not on the same piping, there are way to close. so were going to have to relocate them anyway, another problem my BOV isnt isnt going off it was last night now its not, so another thing to sort through friday

Matthew, the MAF to BOV distance is not an issue. We will relocate it this weekend. I already ordered the reducing elbow we'll need. The biggest issue we have is the stalling and I don't believe it is the BOV. Based upon what you have said, it stalls in all sorts of conditions. The BOV will only cause a problem when it "goes off" and vents metered air, but yours is clamped down pretty tight and not even going off most of the time and not when you are stalling. It didn't do this when it left my house so we need to figure out what happened. Unfortunately this will take some time (as will the MAF relocation) and once we move the MAF, your pretty little CAI won't be mounted correctly anymore - oh well. We'll figure something out, but it will take some time.
