Going into reverse (problem)

Anyone with an auto experience a short rumbling in the engine while shifting into reverse? This rumbling is annoying the hell out of me!!! Like when I parallel park, I pull up in front of the space, step on the brake, then shift into reverse. As soon as I start releasing the brake pedal, the engine rumbles a little before starting to move (like the engine is almost going to stall).

Let see......did you do any mods ?? like intake ??

Mods? Well, nothing much. All i did was remove the intake ducting that's on top of the radiator (keeping the factory air box) and connected a air duct hose to the air box. Oh, and dropped a K&N filter in the air box.

So you think that is the cause of the problem? If so, then probably people with aftermarket intakes would experience the same problem.

And really, I don't think the engine is stalling, just that the transmission is not smooth.

Ppl always think they can figure s*** out on their own. Your 5 has got to be under warranty. Just take it to the dealer. If u have already, what did they say? If all u modified was the filter box, u shouldnt have any funny noises coming out when u reverse. I can imagine that sound making u feel like :mad: ..

nah... that's normal
i get feeling when i reverse too.
if you put it into reverse and don't hold your foot on the brake, then that shuddering feeling will happen.
if you put it into reverse, hold it until it fully engages, then it won't shudder.

mazda transmissions are weak (and their paint sucks)... so live with it

Nah, i'm just curious if anyone else experience this, not trying to fix anything. I figured that's just the way Mazda cars run anyway. But at least I don't feel left out now (thanks ChopstickHero)

I noticed that it does not shudder when i engage reverse starting from "P", but the shudder happens quite frequently when engaging reverse from "D". And yes, I come to a full stop before shifting into reverse.

I'm just guessing, but I noticed a shifting difference in whether or not the engine liked it when I installed my cold air intake, but like everyone does, you just go reset your ECU - that's my only guess on how to fix it, unless that is normal.

Some guy in an earlier thread said when he installed an intake on his auto, the engine complained when shifting, maybe it's the samething.

Thanks Equinox, well, probably it won't help, because it's perfectly fine going forward and it never happens when i engage into the "D" gear.

But, i guess no harm resetting the ECU anyway

BTW Equinox, have you really got the racing beat cat back exhaust???!!! how does it sound??? I thought the exhaust is still on order from racing beat....
