GI: Selling My MSP?

Ok,

Need your opinions here. This isn't a gauging intrest thread as in would you by my MSP? More like should I sell my MSP? So, I want to hear other Protege owner's thoughts on some of the ideas that have been bouncing around in my head as of late.

As it sits right now my wife and I currently have four cars. Obviously, my Spicy Orange MSP, her 99 Miata, a 97 MPV and a 94 V6 Firebird. Way too many cars for two people. Originally our plan was to sell the Firebird and keep the other three vehicles. The MSP would remain my toy and the other two Mazdas would handle daily driving duties. Well, the plan to sell the Firebird remains, but somewhere along the line I've started having thoughts that the MSP would be better off with an owner who actually drove it and it would be fiscally more responsible for me to sell it. (Honestly, I never thought I would hear my self say such things.)

As most people who know me well already know I love my MSP and that modifying her has always been my top priority. While I haven't made huge strides as of yet, I already posses or have on order most of the parts to make the MSP into the car I have always dreamed she could be. In other words, most of the money is spent or the debt has been incurred. So, it's not like I'm cutting myself off before the damage is done. Just to give you a little idea I currently have the following either in the shed or my guest room: Ion FMIC, Unichip, GHL catless DP, Defi Gauges, Clarion VX935 in-dash, Nology wires, Samco hoses, Sparco Torinos with brackets, Sparco Lap 5 steering wheel w/ adapter, GT Spec lateral arm bars, Cusco lower tie bar, Fiber Images CF hood, HKS SMF intake, Turbo XS RFL bov, and a few other things I can't think of. Along with that I have a JSP CF trunk lid and Work Meister S1 wheels paid for just waiting to get here and I am (maybe was) getting ready to order a Wilwood BBK. Plus the items I already have installed on the car: Tein SS coilovers, CAD P5 headlights, McCullogh HID kit, WW rear lip (going away soon) etc. Sorry to be so long winded, just trying to give you an idea of the amount I have budgeted toward this car.

So yeah, I love this car. But, there's the little nagging voice saying it would be better to strip it down, sell it off and then see how much money I could recoop by selling all the mods.

But then there's the booming voice saying "What the fuggin hell are you thinking?" I mean just typing out the all of the stuff I've bought for the car makes me realize how much a part of me will die if I do sell off the car.

My thinking is that my payoff is low enough now that I could probably get a few hundred dollars more than what I owe on her. I owe about $14,600 and I think last time I checked she booked at $15,300 or so. Now, before this turn into one of those "no way you'll get that much for a MSP" threads. Let's examine the facts. The car has 8,700 miles on it, it's rarely driven, almost no flaws on the paint, has not been extensively modded, and has never been driven hard. On top of that I live in Hawaii where cars tend to book a lot higer than they do on the mainland. So, please do not lecture me on how my car isn't worth $9,000.

Anyhow, I could eliminate the debt of the car by selling it and then use the money from selling off the parts to make a dent in my credit card bills. Thus the whole fiscally responsible thing. I just fear that I would be miserable without having a toy to modify so I would either become a surly bastard who sits around and plays video games or I would go out and find another toy to mod and start blowing money all over again.

Now, I am not posting this thread to get attention or anything like that. I really would like some feed back and thoughts from anyone good enough to read this entire post. Honestly, I am so undecided on the whole issue that other people's opinions might very well sway my thinking. Thanks for your time and your thoughts.

honestly man... ive been in the same situation you are in RIGHT NOW... the thing is that i had someone (DAVE THAT ******) yapping in my ear allllll the time... i love my car and if i sold it i wouldnt forgive myself. i was out of credit card debt as of november...but now i have maxed 3 of them out buying things for my car... i will not mention what i have but its a lot. no matter what youll always be in debt... credit cards, car loans, mortgage payments, etc. i know if you sell the car, you will regret it and never forgive yourself. its all you, but i wouldnt (and didnt). who cares about debt... itll always be around and theres always chapter 11!!!! hahahaha

dont do it man...

i say keep the car and stop modding it till u pay off ur CC. u can always keep the mod bug away by doin some DYI mods like porting the mani,TB ect....

I'd say do whatever will best benefit you in the long-run. But, i'd personally get all my mods for the car, put them on, enter it in a show, and than decide from there. I'm sure if you put on all the stuff you have lying in your room, than you will begin to second-guess yourself about the possibility of your car.

However, if you do go with it, and sell your car, you know you always have a buyer here for any parts you're parting with. :)

if i had the time to part mine out, i would and i would buy something like a WRX and not mod it. but in your situation i would just part it out and sell it. or maybe part it out, take it and the firebird to the dealer and trade for one car, or take three of your 4 cars to the dealer and get a new car.

i'm speechless lang. um...man, how can u part w/ that car? def get rid of the red chyken. mayb u should stop mods and pay off the car...i think u'll kick yoself in the behind 4 very long time if u sell your orange turkey...and well, i think you'll b in the dog er cat? house if u get rid of aileen's green beauty heh.

Well,

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. All of your perspectives have helped me in making my decision. Well, coming closer to making a decision.

I've spent the entire day working on the car. Bonding time. lol. I swapped out my bumper with the WW lip for a sedan bumper with the MSP rear lip on it and I threw my DG urethane lip on just for the hell of it. She looks like some kind of Haloween massacre now, but for some reason I think she looks better than she did this morning. lol. I also got my Sparcos installed with only a few scratches from the seat bases.

All in all, I think this is probably what I need to do. If I make a lot of progress on her I think the thoughts of selling her will fade away. As of right now things are kind of touch and go. I'm going to wash her tomorrow. That may be enough to put the thoughts out of my mind. Nothing makes you feel better about your car than how it looks right after a good bath. :D

Thanks again,

Lang

Whenever you're having thoughts of selling the car, throw on another mod Lang. I think that's the key for you to not sell your car. :)

id say just keep it with everything invested in the car. just sell the firebird to help with the bills. A LOT of people are waiting for the unveiling of the "new" msp.

Lang, in all honesty and speaking from experience, Don't lose the cars streetability. You will HATE the car and start to find excuses NOT to drive it. When that happens you will dump it the first chance you get.

ditto.

sorry, i read this last night also, i still dont know how to respond to this thread...

peace

Right now it sounds like you aren't 100% on selling your car. Parting out and selling the car is understandable if you want to cut down the bills. But if you aren't 100% sure about selling the car then you should just keep on going with your plans. A couple of my friends and myself have all gone through phases where we think we're over it or we think we could use a little extra cash but we all weren't 100% sure about our decision to start parting out our cars. The result? We ended up spending more for what we used to have or even more for something better.

Personally I don't want to see you sell the car but the decision should really be all up to you and not any of us. If you did sell, would you be driving around the van everyday or would you get another car? I really don't see how you could be happy from having a brand spankin new speed with lots of goodies and downgrading to a old stock van.

Well, my only input is that i need to sell you a hood prop kit and they will be ready soon...so....you must not sell. :)

There ya go. That settles it, I can't sell. lol.

Nah, I've thought about it a lot this weekend while I've been battling with my damn Sparcos and I think I agree with the general consensus of posts in this thread. I've put too much into my Speed to let her go. So, I won't be selling.

Like Jarret said I'd just end up selling all of the parts I've gotten so far and then decide I don't want to part with the car and have to start all over.

So, y'all are still stuck with me. :D Hopefully, a few key parts will arrive soon and by late Febuary and I'll be able to post up some pics of the car with all the parts installed.

yay <3

i havent put half the work into my MSP that you have put into yours and there is no way i would sell mine.

I beg to differ with you on that one. All those hours you spent on making the moldings for foglight covers, the hood prop, and a whole lot of other custom pieces. I think you've put a lot more time and work into your car. The difference is the things you have done have been not only to help you with your car, but a lot of other Protege owners too. That's why everyone <3's Dexter. :D

oh man i wish i really could finish those fog covers... someday, still have more expanding foam sitting on my shelves...hard to work in chicago cold with no heated facilities.
but, beg to differ all you want, i assure you, your car is at least complete and the interior doesnt look like someone ripped it out in a fit of rage..

and not everyone <3's dexter. only cool people. ;)

hey you know if you need the cash, you can sell me your dg lip....lol...i ordered a msp lip but i like the way both of them look so i was thinking about alternating between the two.
