$2.97 for Premium and there is an oil refinery less than a mile from my house.

I think we are paying close to .50 per gallon tax here in Texas. According to this website, http://www.taxadmin.org/FTA/rate/motor_fl.html, we each pay a state & federal excise tax on each gallon of fuel. Some states also add additional taxes and even a sales tax. So by the time everything is said and done some of us are hit with anywhere from .30 to .60!!! (sorry California) per gallon tax every time we fill up our tanks.

So while the hard working (and not-so-hard working) citizens bear the brunt of everything, our "representatives" (along with their bloated salaries, pensions, expense accounts, and bellies) have more important matters to attend to - such as gay marriage and who's juicing in baseball. So the next time some politician says they can't do anything about the price of fuel, they're lying. Wasn't this country founded upon relief from over-taxation? I believe so.

.02 (.000259 after appropriate taxes are withheld)

I agree 100% I paid 3.15 for 93 yesterday

screw the penguins, drill more!

The thing is, we wouldn't even have to screw the penguins. They would be fine.

Energy independence or bust. We should be sinking more money into developing alternate fuels as the oil will run out sometime as it is a finite resource and ethanol is a band-aid at best (cannibalizing global food source for fuel = a very bad idea in the long run).

For now like it or not we live in a world fueled by oil. And no one and I mean no one is going to stop using oil anytime soon. So heres my long term plan.

1. Drill for our own oil to increase the supply thus reducing the demand, thus driving prices down, thus telling the oil rich countries that hate even though we pay for their lavish lifestyles to pound sand.

2. Phase out coal power plants in favor of clean renewable nuclear power like france has done thus MASSIVELY cutting down CO2 emmisions drastically.

3. Invest heavily in Hybrid, Hydrogen Fuel Cell and Solar transportation starting with public transportation and working our way down to private vehicles and commercial trucks and such.

Makes sense to me. I'm already drooling over the solar powered tesla roadster.

If all green vehicles eventually look this good, consider me a believer!
Sweet, instant, electric torque!

What we really need is a big advocacy group (like over 100,000 strong) in the US to goto foreign car manufacturers and get them to make electric cars. It simply won't be done in the US since this government is still ran by oil companies and the big 3 auto makers in detroit (which is incredibly retarded since they are all loosing money like crazy and make bad cars). I really believe its goingt to be toyota, mazda, nissan, ,etc in the end who really saves this country. you should watch the documentary "who killed the electric car?" its a good download/netflix.

eCars ftw. electric motors are some 40% more power effeciant than a standard petrol engine. I have loved electric vehicles since I was just a boy, and they are only getting better with time. I did see the documentary you speak of and it was an excellent one. I really wish chevrolet had left its car to the people, it was a remarkable machine. Not to mention, I'm sure all of us wouldn't mind a car with a motor that is good up to 1 Million miles with regular maintenance. you could have a car in the family for generations! (cool) (nana) (breakn)

I cannot tell you how much I hated people 4 years ago, and even still most people, who make fun of hybrids or electric cars. Glad to see a few people in this thread are smart. Instant Torque - no more 800 horsepower cars that only make 800 for a millisecond and otherwise spend most of their time as 400-600 power out put engines. Not to mention combustable fuels only have a limited amount of energy they can possible release even in 5 million years if you burn gasoline and air you're going to get the same output, but electrical energy is virtually limitless. Especially considering how efficent electrical equipment is, there is SO much room for improvement. Light weight batteries > gallons of fuel.

I always wanted to build a hyrbid car and put like "TREE HUGGER RACING" all over it and make it a nice green paint job, and than go and race people on the streets and be like "WHAT NOW"... too bad it's just a dream for now lol

I was also thinking... america would do well to lead the electric car movement. We are the largest industrial and wealthiest country in the world. We depend on oil more than any other country and we get so much s*** for it. We need gas in our cars to get business done. Substitute that with electric cars and it does many things. Increased our Public Relations (PR) with other countries, slows down our environmental damage, increases how much money we have since we won't have to spend money on gasoline as an expense to getting business done. Also we would re-affirm our technological advancement here in the US.

The same americans that work at and own gas stations could get into the electric recharge/service business. The only ones hurt would be the international market that sells us the oils. We would be independant again economically.

You have to admit that the hybrid and electric car market sorta didn't help its case at first.

I mean I'm a petrol head. I love internal combustion, the roar of a motor and a good looking car,

But the EV1, the first prius and many other entries just looked....well....silly. And as a car guy, looks matter to me. You have to make something that palatable to the mainstream and the enthuisast not just jetsons wannabes. Now they are doing a lot better with the styling of these vechicles and they will only become for afforable as the tech gets cheaper. As it stands now, it does not make a lot of sense to pay the price premium for a Hybrid which you probably won't recoup for a looooooooooong time.

If Hybrids commanded maybe a $1000 premium over their I.C.E counterparts instead of a $4000 and up premium, I think you'd see a much higher adoption rate.

I think we'll get where we want to be eventually but its gunna take time and reasonable tactics and its not gunna happen overnight. :)

I am always reminded of the old videos of cars racing horses... the horses won, the cars broke down, were crappy and smelled of exhaust, ect.

Look at us now

and we also loved the look of the quality and picture definition of the VCR
