My car's engine developed a bit of hesitation when accelerating so I thought about replacing the fuel pump assembly. Found a cheap fuel pump on E-bay, bought it and installed it today. Well, attempted to install the whole assembly but it turned out that I bought the wrong fuel pump assembly. My car's fuel pump has an extra fuel line at the bottom, the AWD version. Turns out I bought the FWD version. What do we do, what do we do... We improvise! Took both assemblies apart and made one assembly operational. Basically, I replaced the fuel filter which is installed at the bottom of the pump! Now I have a spare fuel pump. After the work was complete, I took the car for a test drive. Started the engine just fine, from the first try, no hesitation, no fault codes, nothing. The car seems to accelerate better, no hesitation observed today but I probably need to give it few days and then decide if it's fixed or not.
To access the fuel pump area you must remove the rear couch. There are two locking clips under the couch, in front of it. Once you release the two clips, the couch should come up. Once you dislocate the couch from its place, disconnect the connectors from the back side, so you can completely remove the couch from the work area.
You need a Phillips screwdriver and something with a flat tip or a pick to help with disconnecting the connector and the fuel lines from the assembly. When you take the access panel out, you will notice a lot of dust over the fuel pump. Clean the area with some rags and some water or cleaner. You don't want any FOD to fall inside the reservoir once you remove the fuel pump assembly. Have some rags ready, to cover the fuel line when you disconnect, some gasoline will come out and you want to contain it. Make a mental note or take pictures before every step, in case you forget how to reinstall everything back. Pull the assembly out carefull not to spill fuel inside the car. You'll have to tilt it slowly, to find the best angle for the fuel level floater to come out. While tilting the assembly you can actually pour the gasoline from the assembly back into the fuel reservoir. For better instructions watch this YouTube video: Mazda CX-5 Fuel Pump replacement FYI: if you drive the AWD version, you need PN: PYB2-13-35X - it has an extra fuel line at the bottom. For FWD version you need PN: PYB1 -13-35X - no fuel line at the bottom of the assembly. If you are not sure which part number you need, the best way would be to take a look.
