Fs Ze And The Story of the Uncontrollable Ping

No but when it throws an emissions code it will run rich automatically. It's programmed into the ecu. When I fixed mine I went from 24-26 mpg to 30~ mpg just from doing one small thing like that

I have a FS-ZE ECU but no wiring for this if you're interested.. I was going to use it but decided to go aftermarket instead.

@RicoP5: Don't know. I'm assuming I would have to get the valve cover off to get that info?

@Rhys: Thanks for the offer, I would consider if I didn't live in California - need to pass emissions tests. That's why I kind of like the set up I have right now; come emissions I just put in a precat I bought and swap in the USDM factory ECU. I wouldn't be able to do that with the FS ZE harness.

@Tweety: I really think you're on to something with the f/a mixture. This weekend I went to Big Bear. The elevation is about 21x greater than where I live. I noticed as I ascended up the mountain after a certain height the pining totally ceased. Driving around in Big Bear for 3-4 days... no pinging at all, and it seemed to idle smoother. I think this is so because there is considerably less air up in the mountains, making my a/f ratio "richer." Sure enough, when I went back home, there came the pinging again.

So, I read up on this thread about how someone swapped a fuel pressure regulator out of a 626 to richen his a/f ratio slightly on his MSP (I think he tested it with a wideband). http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123802728-Do-this-if-you-want-a-slightly-richer-AFR-for-cheap!

I thought I could do the same.

I then checked the FPR I have on FS ZE Intake manifold (I haven't installed it yet), and noticed it had different coloring and part numbers than the FSDE regulator I have on. The ZE regulator neck was shorter and ever-so-slightly larger in diameter than the DE regulator, so when I tried to swap it with the FS DE regulator it wouldn't fit into the attachment-bracket-thing connected to the fuel hose :( Another stopping point. Anyone know How I can make it fit? Can I get a JDM attachment from the dealership? If I get desperate enough I'll Dremel it in...

Get a bigger hose to fit the ze regulator. You will need to get a clamp to tighten down where the hose goes because it will be bigger an you need a tight fit.

Or take your current hose and make a small slit on it, it should give you enough room to get it started. After that you will have to fight it on there. It's a pain but possible I've had to do it

Install Protege blue label regulator, yellow regulator from capella FS or familia FS 4WD almost less pressure. I use FS-ZE mani with FS-ZE fuel rail and pro5 regulator in my setup!

Good info Ivan. So does that mean that less pressure would RICHEN my a/f ratio? If so, then I want to use the yellow.

Would the ze use bigger injectors?

The injectors on my DE and ZE look exactly the same...

Just for clarity, go to this page and scroll down to the FS ZE. My engine looks exactly that (notice the yellow FPR). According to this site it's from a Mazda Familia. There is an FS ZE for sale in the marketplace that has the coils on the valve cover, like the DE. So I'm guessing there were more than one versions of the FS ZE...

Yes there was jspec fsde which most refer to as the an fsze, then there was an fsze in the awd sport 20 an I think a few other models but can't remember. The best one was in the msf, it had the special cams just for it but there were only 203 made or something like that

Isn't it? Spend a week on google and you will figure it out. There is a lot of forums with a lot of info on them. Some is wrong some is right

This is the early version of FS-ZE engine with coils ang wires from 1.8 FP engine. You atmo, af ratio the same in closed loop, it affects only boosted car!

well found out the proper intake cam. now onto the exhaust one

Exhaust cam are the same on japan market and usa and europe his lift is 8mm, intake 8,7. Corksport exhaust cam is 8,7 lift! In our Russian forum we have a vendor from Komsomolsk na Amure its near Japan, he sold used parts from Familia and never see another exhaust cam!
