Fram Oil Filter?

The larger V-6 filter from the 626 series is a direct replacement, and gives better flow and filtering than the original thimble sized filter. FWIW...I just checked my old filter junkpile, and I'm still voting for the Wix 51356. My Tenex(?)-manufactured Mazda filter has lots of filter material (101 sq. in.) for it's size, but had "flash" on the edges of the inlet holes where the metal is punched out, and this kept the floppy antidrainback valve from sealing properly. Result; occasional start-up rattles :( from a completely drained filter. The Wix has larger cleanly made inlet holes, 93 sq. in. of equal or better filter media, a better antidrainback valve, and has a better center tube design for better flow of filtered oil. Nothing but plusses to me. Cost is the same (less than $6).

Bringin this thread back but i just got over 3000 miles on my engine. Decided i was gonna change it myself and not wait till 5000 for the dealer to do it. I dunno about how flexible some of you guy are but i couldnt even get a grip on the filter.Craftsman Universal Oil Filter Wrench, Auto-Adjustable at sears.com I was gonna buy that . Also i work at napa so i bought a napa filter any word on them. So i just changed the oil for now ill get the filter after i buy that tool prob tomorrow. I also use quakerstate peak performance oil. So what yr mazda 626 should i get the filter off cause the filter is wayyyyy to small. It has to be the v-6 tho right. Thanx

Wait, so you changed the oil but not the filter?? Why not do them both at the same time?? It's going to be a pain in the ass if you are trying to change just a filter on a full crankcase.

I think it's because he couldn't take the oil filter off (the first filter installed from factory are known to be ridiculously tight)

I understand that part. Why not wait a day and do it all at once?? That makes way more sense than having to try and do them separately.(poke)

Well i let the oil out first then realized i couldnt even get a hand on the filter. Also you can change the filter with a full crank case the oil is in the pan below the filter wouldnt hurt anything. Ide just have to add more oil after to take place where the new filter soaked it up.Really tho how did u guys grab it with no socket my hand had to go behind the cross member then in front the axel so with my arm in a s i couldnt even grab it. I think its pretty stupid how u have to get to it.

I used one of those rubber strap wrenches.....if that don't work....stab it w/ a screwdriver & use the screwdriver to turn it. good luck

Back to the original question about Fram....they suck!! You'd probally have a better time using a paper cup and a coffee filter with some rubber bands. I've been using Wix for a couple of years with no problems whatsoever. They can be found at CarQuest and Napa Auto.

I went and bought me a filter socket that fits right on the end im set. Also im gonna exchange my filter for the 626 one its exactly the same like said just longer.

Just an addition, the Fram "problem" seems to be more recent. A lot of the older car folks used to recommend Fram.

Yes, from what I understand the Wix is identical to the Napa Gold and Carquest Premium.

Just hold the Wix clones in yer hand and look at the baseplate - way more inlet area into the filter than any other I've seen. Best compromise, IMHO, between flow and filtration.

Hmmm maybe ill use the napa gold next time i used the silver this time. Lookin at it tho they looked the same. Napa has good products after buying at auto zone all the time and now workin at napa i realize how crappy auto zone parts are.

I don't know about the P5 but on the sedan if you put the 626 filter on there, you WILL NOT have enough room to put that socket cap on it when you need to get the filter off. Just a warning for ya. I tried the 626 filter but it's just that much more of a PITA to get off so I quit using it.

I think it's funny how 99% of the people on here believe Fram is crap because of an old subjective "study" done on a bunch of filters. I'm not saying Fram is good or bad but I will say you have to take what others say with a grain of salt. Use what works.

how come i haven't seen this thread earlier. When i decided to change my oi for the first timel the guy at the autozone convinced me to buy fram, and i have been using them ever since :( or roughly for 8 months. I just changed my oil to mobil one 10W30 and used the god damn fram filter again. Should i be worried about it now, or just not worry and just use diff. filter next time?
